    Pros and Cons
    • "I believe the most crucial feature of OmniPeek search is the ability to sniff packets based on channel switching."
    • "The solution's automation has room for improvement."

What is our primary use case?

We are an authorized cache laboratory in India that specializes in testing and certifying WLAN protocol devices for interoperability. We use OmniPeek to conduct testing and pre-certification for global standards, as well as Wireshark, a competitor tool.

We can use OmniPeek to sniff the air packets for devices such as routers. By selecting a particular channel, we can observe what the router is transmitting. OmniPeek provides a wealth of information, including the router's beacon broadcasted over the air. The beacon can provide us with a lot of data, including the network name (SSID), security protocol, encryption standard, power management settings, data rate, and more. We can also detect WPS information elements and throughput information elements. In essence, all of this can be detected by sniffing the beacon.

We can also view probe packets within OmniPeek. We are able to define other channels as well, in addition to being able to observe sniffing on the 2.4 and 5 GHz spectrum. We can also filter out the packets we wish to see or focus solely on the spectrum if desired. Since it is Windows based, it is quite user-friendly and widely used. We use the solution to check for WLAN protocols and obtain information when needed for certain use cases. For instance, a test case where a device has connected and all packets transferred in the course of the year can be seen in OmniPeek. We can also use it for Ethernet and sniff packets when, for example, an enterprise authentication is conducted. All the message exchanges that occur during the enterprise-level authentication can also be sniffed using OmniPeek.

    What is most valuable?

I believe the most crucial feature of OmniPeek search is the ability to sniff packets based on channel switching. Use cases such as DFS and non-DFS channels over the year are made easier by OmniPeek search. In such scenarios, the last five or six packets collected after the switch to a non-DFS channel give us information about the switch. OmniPeek is incredibly user-friendly and provides all the information needed to analyze when a packet is switched to a particular channel. Each packet can be opened individually to see what channel it switched to and at what time. This information can then be filtered to see how many minutes or seconds it took. This feature is especially helpful when investigating a use case of switching from a DFS to a non-DFS.

    What needs improvement?

The solution's automation has room for improvement. I have observed that Wireshark is much more commonly used for automation than OmniPeek. This is because when scripts are involved, Wireshark provides a great deal of flexibility for automating the process of packet sniffing. In the case of OmniPeek, its capabilities are limited, which restricts its automation potential. However, it is already user-friendly and compatible with Microsoft, so if it were to become comparable to Wireshark, it could potentially dominate the market. I have seen many new versions of OmniPeek, but I have never seen an automation version.

The price of OmniPeek can be improved. Many customers have chosen the solution due to its user-friendly nature, but the cost often prevents them from making a purchase. This means that they may opt for an open-source tool instead. We should look into making the pricing more competitive and consider offering customization options to increase its utility in automation. This could be a game-changer.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using the solution for over eight years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

I believe that the stability of the software has improved substantially since I last used version 12.0 or 14.0 of OmniPeek. We have newer versions of OmniPeek that are now quite stable. The WiFi card used to capture packets is widely available, so we can purchase any card and install OmniPeek to view the packets. I believe that the scale of the solution is improving daily. Automation, however, is a challenge. If this is incorporated, it would be one of the most powerful tools on the market.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

OmniPeek is definitely scalable. There is a lot of potentials for it to be used on a daily basis. I have been working in this industry for the last 8 to 9 years and I have come across many vendors and customers who are familiar with this solution. They know of OmniPeek's capabilities and how it can help them. The only limitation in terms of pricing comes when purchasing a license to use the OmniPeek software, as it is only available for Windows and is costly. The scalability of the software is advantageous for vendors who use the tool and for performance testing, as it provides a lot of information. Therefore, OmniPeek is highly scalable and offers good value for money.

How are customer service and support?

Every time we sought help from the technical support team, they provided us with the assistance we needed. They were very helpful in the installation process, helping us to choose the right hardware. Overall, they offered us great support.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We have only purchased the add-on once and have not paid for any subsequent versions as it was too costly for us. We had an opportunity to investigate other tools, specifically Wireshark. We chose to use Wireshark because it was free to use over the internet and met our needs without the requirement to upgrade due to cost. We used Wireshark alongside OmniPeek. However, we decided not to upgrade to newer versions due to the cost.

What other advice do I have?

I give the solution an eight out of ten.

We are an authorized test laboratory that provides services for many vendors worldwide who are developing and creating devices utilizing Wi-Fi interoperability and portable LAN standards. We conduct testing according to the IEEE standards. We test each use case against the IEEE standards. If all the cases pass and all the parameters are accounted for, the interoperability is successful and the device is ready for the market. We certify it by giving it the WiFi Certified logo, which is a black and white logo. That is our goal.

There is approximately 30 to 40 staff in our team, with a hierarchical structure ranging from project manager to team lead, and senior and junior test engineers, as well as new hires and freshers. All of us are involved in the process of testing methodology. At our laboratory, which is certified by the International Standardization Organization (ISO), we must adhere to certain standards and methodologies, and we are not allowed to deviate from them. In addition to this, there are also other tasks that need to be completed. In order to ensure we have the best staff with the right expertise, we must conduct assessments. This will enable us to provide high-quality testing of any device that supports WLAN on a daily basis.

Almost everyone in our company is using the solution according to the testing needs. There is no specific role assigned to the staff.

We need to keep the license for OmniPeek handy in case we have to install the solution on a new device. Experienced and expert engineers should be the only ones involved in the maintenance of the software and hardware used for OmniPeek. Over time, we share our expertise with new team members and then pass it down to others as they gain proficiency. However, the quality management team is always responsible for upholding the standards.

Currently, OmniPeek is not used extensively due to its limitations. The test methodology we are using is also hampered by these limitations. At this time, I don't know if we will be able to increase OmniPeek's usage in the future. However, as of now, we only use OmniPeek for specific items when we need to, not on a regular basis.

I'm aware that all the people I know and the vendors I'm familiar with are using OmniPeek in their companies. Additionally, I've heard that other companies are also implementing this software for their testing needs. Whenever I meet new vendors or those new to WLAN environment testing and interoperability testing, I always recommend they use OmniPeek. Installing this software can allow them to better view packets and gain a deeper understanding of their environment.

Easy to identify packets, beneficial color assigning, and responsive support
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of OmniPeek is the ability to assign custom color codes to the different packets easily."
    • "I am not using OmniPeek for automation, we only do manual testing. Automation testing is tedious to do. The automation should be more user-friendly. I have exposed some APIs but the usage is not user-friendly."

What is our primary use case?

We are responsible for OmniPeek for a company and it is used for WiFi packet sniffing and validation.

We have a protocol to validate the 8.2.11.* IP block. When we are associating a client with the WiFi network, it is following this protocol defined by this IP block. If we have an issue with the new client not associating correctly we have to see why it is happening. For example, it could be the authentication mechanism or the AP not able to respond.

There are legacy features in the solution, such as ABG, then later came ACAC. Whether the rules set out are followed or not by an access point or a client this is what we check by using OmniPeek.

OmniPeek is a standalone solution that is installed on test laptops. It's a multi-license solution.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of OmniPeek is the ability to assign custom color codes to the different packets easily.

    What needs improvement?

I am not using OmniPeek for automation, we only do manual testing. Automation testing is tedious to do. The automation should be more user-friendly. I have exposed some APIs but the usage is not user-friendly.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using OmniPeek for approximately 10 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

    OmniPeek is a stable solution.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

OmniPeek is scalable. You have can have a single license but multiple licenses are available. You can install the solution on laptops and servers and the IP can be given to users.

We have approximately 20 testing units and 15 people who use Wireshark as automation analysts and others who use OmniPeek for manual testing.

How are customer service and support?

The support from OmniPeek is good.

You need to know where to look when you are facing issues, and you can click for help. We do not have many issues with the solution because it is user-friendly When we needed to contact the support they were responsive.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have previously used Wireshark. One of the differences between OmniPeek and Wireshark is in the test bed OmniPeek allows you to choose a color coding for each and every component. You can set the color of many components, such as the client based on your interest, and MAC address. You are able to see certain packets from the APs easier. Wireshark is more user-friendly for automation and OmniPeek is good for manual testing.

Wireshark cannot be run continuously because the buffers will be used up after half an hour and the application crash. However, in OmniPeek this does not happen it continuously starts until the memory space is consumed. It will not crash. You can run it for twelve hours continuously and it will save without crashing.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of OmniPeek is easy. You download an executable file from the internet, install it, then provide the licensee you were given. Additionally, you can install it on servers, give the IP addresses and it will run it.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

There are different types of licenses available.

What other advice do I have?

My advice to others is this solution is easy, but they should have some prior knowledge of how to use a sniffing tool in a network. It will take some time to understand. it. Learning how to use the solution is not difficult.

I rate OmniPeek an eight out of ten.

Easy to capture and analyze raw packets but is a bit expensive
    Pros and Cons
    • "It's a solid piece of software. It's stable."
    • "I don't see a clear roadmap in the future for improving this software."

What is our primary use case?

Our company is an ODM manufacturer for wireless products like routers and WiFi access points. As an RD and QA department, we are sniffing the packet from the air to capture the raw WiFi traffic from the air.

    What is most valuable?

Generally, it can capture the raw packet and analyze it. I do not like or prefer a specific feature; only the main functionality.

It's a solid piece of software. It's stable.

    What needs improvement?

There's likely not a future for OmniPeek in LiveAction. LiveAction acquired OmniPeek. I don't see a clear roadmap in the future for improving this software.

    It's a bit expensive.

The product has almost too many functions. A lot of the functionality I do not use.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for about 15 years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The solution is stable and reliable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution isn't really scalable, and we haven't really used it for scaling.

We have five or six people sharing two copies.

We installed it on a notebook, so whoever needs to sniff the packet just grabs the laptop, and then he or she can sniff the wireless packet.

How are customer service and support?

I have no idea what technical support is like. I never reached out and ask for support. If we encounter some issues, we will search online and in most cases, we don't have technical issues.

    How was the initial setup?

This product is easy to implement.

To implement the solution takes one hour since the key part for us is finding the right wireless link to support OmniPeek to capture the wireless traffic. So as long as you are working in this field, you know what wireless card you need to use and what driver to install. That's the hard part. If you have related experience in the field, one hour is good enough in terms of getting it set up.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The pricing could be a little bit lower.

I'm not in charge of purchasing and cannot speak to the exact cost for us.

What other advice do I have?

We're a customer. We use it in our company.

OmniPeek has to announce its roadmap to support 11 AX. Otherwise, I don't think anybody sees a future in purchasing another copy of that software.

Overall, I'd rate the solution seven out of ten.

Easy to use solution but needs to improve its level of performance
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature of OmniPeek was the ability it gave us to see the connection procedure."
    • "I would like to see the tool work in an open environment the same as how it does in a closed environment."

What is our primary use case?

I used OmniPeek for an automation project that I was working on. The solution was used to capture wireless packets. OmniPeek was used for sniffing.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature of OmniPeek was the ability it gave us to see the connection procedure. We could see how the station is connecting and what was the flow.

It also provides support for when we enter any password wrong so that we can estimate by using the packets and see where it went wrong.

OmniPeek is easy to use. The sniffing tool is easy to capture and is very comfortable to analyze.

    What needs improvement?

OmniPeek needs to improve its performance level. I would like to see the tool work in an open environment the same as how it does in a closed environment.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been using OmniPeek for six months.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We did not experience any bugs with OmniPeek. The solution is stable.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

I have three years of prior experience using Wireshark. We have gotten higher performance with OmniPeek.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup of OmniPeek was easy. The solution can capture all of the packets within two or three minutes.

What other advice do I have?

There are some drawbacks to OmniPeek because there are some packets missing. With OmniPeek you can capture the flow by using filters.

I would rate the solution a seven out of 10 overall.

User friendly, extremely scalable, with fast deployment
    Pros and Cons
    • "The most valuable feature is OmniPeek is user-friendly."
    • "I would like to see the saving feature improved. We have had issues if you do not save your progress then you have to start from the beginning."

What is our primary use case?

Our primary use case is for a wireless access point. We are using it to analyze the timeframes and fix issues.

    What is most valuable?

The most valuable feature is the user-friendly environment.

    What needs improvement?

I would like to see the saving feature improved. We have had issues if you do not save your progress then you have to start from the beginning.

For how long have I used the solution?

I have been working with OmniPeek for the past seven years.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

The stability of OmniPeek is good.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The scalability is perfect. We have more than one hundred individuals using the solution.

    How was the initial setup?

The initial setup is not difficult. In some other scenarios, somebody should be there. Sometimes the interface was not detecting and we needed to restart. Doing that requires going to the network manager, and again we needed to restart. In fifteen to twenty minutes you can have the software installed and be up and running.

    What about the implementation team?

We did the implementation through an IT department.

What other advice do I have?

I would rate OmniPeek a nine out of ten. If you have some basic information before you are using it for the first time that would be helpful. OmniPeek is a good product, but you should know its purpose for your organization. You should be aware of the software available and you need to know what license requirements you will need.
