It's been tested, and it's very durable
Pros and Cons
  • "We use RecoverPoint for disaster recovery and asynchronous replication, and we use the application at a block level, not the software level. This has been tested, and it's very durable."
  • "Integration with VMware is the only thing we need to improve. Another feature I'd like to see is the ability to convert management to HTML. And the integration should also be done on the same level."

What is our primary use case?

We use RecoverPoint for disaster recovery and asynchronous replication, and we use the application at a block level, not the software level. This has been tested, and it's very durable. We mainly use RecoverPoint because we have different models. The standard storage block is EMC VNX5800, and the other is Unity 300.

We need middleware to replicate between these two SAN storage devices, so we use RecoverPoint from Dell EMC. If they were from the same company, we could use the native software. For example, if we were replicating from Unity to Unity, we wouldn't need RecoverPoint.

What needs improvement?

Integration with VMware is the only thing we need to improve. Another feature I'd like to see is the ability to convert management to HTML. And the integration should also be done on the same level.

For how long have I used the solution?

We've been using Recoverpoint since 2018.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

Scalability is one of the few drawbacks of this thing. They're still using Flash Player to manage. The Flash Player can't handle all the puzzles, so they had to invent a tool to complement Flash, and now it is extremely slow.

So far, we haven't needed to increase our usage, but we will probably switch to another vendor when we change the technology. We will upgrade the SAN storage, so we'll only change our replication solution.

How are customer service and support?

I give Dell EMC support a perfect 10.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

Before, we used native software. It was a BNS model, but that reached the end of support, so we changed to Unity.

How was the initial setup?

The setup was incredibly complex and took almost three months. We have two storage admins to deploy and manage Recoverpoint and four engineers to maintain the solution.

What about the implementation team?

We had help from a professional reseller. In our deployment, we prioritized the storage that should be replicated and space. We created everything the same way as we did on the disaster-recovery side and did a consultation. The main obstacle was compatibility between the firmware and the software version to be integrated.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

We bought a three-year license for RecoverPoint. It was bundled with the Unity 300 storage, and they cost almost $40,000 combined. The software has a perpetual license, but the issue is support. That's where it costs.

Which other solutions did I evaluate?

We didn't compare because we knew that RecoverPoint is from the same company, so it would have better compatibility, and the support would be unified. We wouldn't need to talk to a third party to solve this issue.

What other advice do I have?

I rate RecoverPoint nine out of 10. My advice to future users is to pay for a full support contract with the vendor because you cannot implement it alone. And the RecoverPoint setup is a one-time thing, but if a problem happens, you also need to take care of the critical points.

This is what you should take care of on your own. And, of course, the management of RecoverPoint needs to be transferred over. It needs to change from Flashware to stream modify.

Which deployment model are you using for this solution?

On-premises

Mature with a nice user interface and good management capabilities
Pros and Cons
  • "The solution is now Flash-based, which is better. they moved away from Java."
  • "The cost of the solution is pretty high. The licensing costs may affect a company's ability to scale."

What is our primary use case?

Our customers are using this solution. We basically use the solution for DR, Disaster Recovery.

What is most valuable?

The setups that we have in place are great. We use the site replication, the Continuous Remote Replication. That's quite useful for us.

The stability is good.

the initial setup is straightforward.

One advantage of the RecoverPoint is the ability to recover to a point in time. You also have so many images and you are able to recover them.

The product is quite mature.

The solution is now Flash-based, which is better. they moved away from Java.

The management capabilities are excellent.

The product has a new user interface, which is very nice.

What needs improvement?

There's always room for improvement, although I don't have a specific example on hand.

The cost of the solution is pretty high. The licensing costs may affect a company's ability to scale.

For how long have I used the solution?

I've used the solution for five years or so. It's been a while.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

We have found the solution to be extremely stable. There are no bugs or glitches. It doesn't crash or freeze.

What do I think about the scalability of the solution?

The solution is scalable. The only downside is it might be a little bit expensive in terms of being limited in terms of the consistency of groups that you can create. The licensing tends to be a little bit pricey for the region in which we are operating.

How are customer service and support?

I haven't needed technical support and therefore cannot speak to how helpful or supportive they are.

Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?

What we used to have was not exactly the same. However, from a storage point of view, we've used some things such as IBM Metro Mirror, SVC for implementing similar solutions. Instead of using the additional RecoverPoint, we used Global Mirror for continuous change volumes. We also used Metro Mirror.

We used these other products in slightly different scenarios - not in exactly the same way we are using Dell.

How was the initial setup?

With the Dell EMC products, the implementation is quite straightforward. You have the implementation procedure. You can actually generate details to guide you through the implementation if you're not familiar with the process. From that aspect, it is fine. There's not really an issue.

What about the implementation team?

I am able to handle the implementation for clients.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

The licenses are expensive.

What other advice do I have?

I handle the installation and support of the product for clients.

I'd rate the solution at a seven out of ten. I'm pretty happy with it. It's a good solution.
