Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature is that it is an all-in-one monitoring system.""It allows me to quickly see the status of all of my printers, switches, computers, and virtual machines to determine if any system has fallen.""Thanks to its flexibility, I have been able to adapt the tool to our servers and find out quickly how their console works.""Pandora FMS provides us with a general report (graphical) about all of the connected devices, which helps with planning new stations and tracking them.""The official forum is active enough to answer most of the high-end technical questions that you may have.""I like this solution a lot because it has a very large Hispanic community and the platform looks very friendly.""Thanks to this software and to the work of the support team, we have everything under control.""It is easy to create your own custom modules if you just know a little bit of scripting. If you have unique requirements, you can just make your own modules. You can even grab checks from other vendors. There are open-source checks for various things such as SMTP, etc. There is a long list of different ones from Nagios. You can just use them, and within seconds, you get yourself a check that is monitoring whatever you need. It is really flexible. I guess that's why they call it Pandora Flexible Monitoring System (FMS). It is reliable. It does the job, and it alerts. It is also surprisingly feature-rich. Our network guy just recently asked about a particular protocol to monitor the bandwidth on the network, which is not a common protocol. When I looked it up, and I found that they cover it. It is very mature for a not-so-known product."

"One of the most valuable features are the reports. They're pretty good. Also, the ease of installation and customization for the client is another feature that we value. SolarWinds has a lot of features but these are the ones I like the most. We also like that the KPIs have the ability to be preset.""We use the solution as a central monitoring tool. We use it to monitor every transaction that has a relation to the organization’s infrastructure.""The most valuable feature of SolarWinds Server and Application Monitor is the network devices' performance monitor is the best.""Monitoring the components on your devices with out of the box monitors or the ability to create new ones (SAM)""The solution has good alerts. Notifications are sent via email to technicians. You can filter the kinds of alerts you want to receive as well. It's excellent.""Hardware health: It allows for proactive monitoring of the hardware health and is a game changer.""I am impressed with the tool's AppStack feature which mainly helps us in the identification process. This feature can give an overview of the fault and help us identify the issues for performance degradation. Instead of looking at multiple places, we can look at a single place to identify the issues.""AppInsight. Provides a simple way to get very in-depth monitoring configured for our most popular applications. Exchange, SQL, and SharePoint."

Cons
"This solution requires proper training to get 100% out of it.""It would be helpful to include the generation of reports for times that the network was out of service.""Their support is good, but it is just online communication. It would be great to be able to just call someone and talk to them instead of always writing. It works well for me because I am a decent communicator in email, but some people might find it difficult to describe in a written fashion and communicate with them that way. There is a learning curve to the interface, but once you get used to it, it is actually very powerful. They have a lot of options, but people struggle with the interface. They've improved it though, and it is getting better. They need to keep improving the learning curve to help buy-in. I'm the guy that manages it, so I'm comfortable with it. They can refine the upgrade agents to be easier. They can also do more refinement in end-user usability because not everyone is strong technically, and people who aren't strong technically might be averse to the product, even though it has come a long way. It has a complete GUI and everything.""Pandora FMS is relatively new, and the interface with the older version crashes at times. We have several different operating systems, such as Linux and Windows, and Pandora does not run as well in these.""We would like to see improvement in the mainframe integration that this solution is capable of.""I sincerely believe that Pandora needs new ideas for functionality closer to advanced device security monitoring.""I would like for the solution to be faster and have a better tolerance between parallel servers for Pandora and Pest Control.""The price for Pandora FMS is expensive."

More Pandora FMS Cons →

"SAM's software-defined network monitoring capability is also low and could be improved.""Downside of the tools is the web console are hung or crash. It need to improve the performance.""Mapping interactions between systems.""A lot of times, we have to do a lot of manual cleanups.""Solarwinds should come up the same monitoring system for other certificate expiration alert apart from SSL.""I believe that some of the trends, environmental maps, and items like those found in Orion would be very beneficial.""An additional feature that would improve this solution is the ability to complete root cause analysis.""The product needs to reduce its price."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Only one payment and it includes support, updates, new versions, and access to the complete library of plugins except for SAP and z/OS."
  • "Pandora FMS is easy to implement and the pricing of licenses is competitive."
  • "You get the license and it includes updates, new versions, and access to the complete library of modules."
  • "My rule of thumb would be that if you need more than thirty agents, and you lack an automation tool such as Chef or Puppet, you will save a lot of time and money going to the Enterprise edition."
  • "In terms of money, the Enterprise version is the cheapest that I have found after a market study."
  • "The open-source version offers 100% functionality and the hardware requirements for a solution like this one are very modest."
  • "Growing the solution or migrating to the Enterprise version is easy, and various plans are available."
  • "The Open Source Community Edition is great to just explore the software, or use it on medium-sized infrastructures."

  • "I have always said SolarWinds is very “proud” of their products, meaning they are expensive. I cannot afford to purchase all the licenses I need for all the SolarWinds products."
  • "When planning for the number of licenses to purchase, make sure you understand all of the elements within an application required to really understand performance well. In our case, we quickly came to the conclusion that an unlimited license for SAM was the way to go."
  • "Nagios XI, WhatsUpGold, Uptime Software, PRTG, Manage Engine, and SpiceWorks are the other tools that have lower pricing and licensing costs. However, they can't compete with SolarWinds when it comes to the features and functionality that SolarWinds can provide."
  • "I would advise potential buyers to wait until the end of the quarter, end of year, or other time to place orders. There are actually great deals to be had at those times if your budget cycle can match up."
  • "Pricing and licensing is fair for what you get. It does have a great bang-for-the-buck appeal."
  • "SAM is not per server so the pricing model can be deceiving. If you have an enterprise environment, you will quickly exceed your licensing quickly. You should know this before going in."
  • "Understanding the counts of objects to monitor will determine the licensing need. In terms of pricing, it’s not cheap but it’s not expensive as larger vendors whose products don’t have all the features or integrations."
  • "The product might cost you $30,000 USD to buy, but scaling this solution requires the purchase of additional polling engines at $20,000 USD each."
