A stable solution with an intuitive interface and quick customer service
I have been working with Fortinet FortiGate, WatchGuard, Sophos, and SonicWall. I'm not as comfortable with SonicWall because of their UI and limitations. I prefer Fortinet above all other options. When it comes to configuration, I am confident in my ability to handle various tasks, including creating policies such as firewall rules, web policies, and application policies. Additionally, I can configure VPNs and implement load balancing, among other tasks. Overall, I feel much more comfortable working with Fortinet. Fortinet has made significant improvements by integrating AI with firewalls for threat analysis and prevention. In the past 2-3 years, they have launched FortiSASE and SIEM, and they also provide SOC services. Both Palo Alto and Fortinet FortiGate are excellent. While Fortinet FortiGate comes at higher prices, the functionality and support justify the cost. They promptly resolve firmware issues and inform all support providers about configuration changes.

Blocking access from specific countries and ensuring robust security have been effortlessly achieved
I use IPFire to protect my home The best feature of IPFire is the location block functionality. It allows me to block certain countries from accessing my site. Additionally, it is a solution that is available for free, which is perfect. The graphical interface could be much better. I have…

Web filtering and traffic balancing have improved security for SMBs but threat insight still needs work
I assess the machine learning capabilities of SonicWall TZ in proactive threat detection to not be at the level of other vendors such as Palo Alto Networks, Fortinet, and Check Point. It is somewhere in between, so I would not recommend it for a large enterprise-level organization to rely on because it is not at that level. SonicWall TZ's content filtering service is reliable. We have used it, but it is not very reliable compared to brands such as Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, or Check Point. What could be improved about SonicWall TZ is the threat intelligence, which by far is not at the level of vendors such as Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks, and Check Point. Their threat intelligence needs to be improved, as does the GUI, which is not as user-friendly compared to devices such as Fortinet. They could learn from their competitors by making the product more user-friendly. The product interface is not that user-friendly. By adopting a more user-friendly GUI, improving threat intelligence, and enhancing the available guides would be beneficial. In my understanding, in some cases, the KB articles and knowledge articles were not that efficient. They were useful, but they could have been more precise with the knowledge base articles. They need to provide more information about SonicWall TZ, specifically more documentation and more troubleshooting articles. Other than the threat intelligence and the user-friendly GUI, there are no other additional features that I can think of for SonicWall TZ in the future or at least in the next release to make it more competitive.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I rate this solution a nine out of ten."

"This version is stable. I don't have any issues with this solution, in our environment, it works well."

"The key features include SD-WAN, firewall use, intrusion prevention, intrusion detection, and application control."
"Fortinet FortiGate offers several valuable features, particularly as an interface-based solution. Its design makes it easy to understand both incoming and outgoing network traffic through its interface."
"IPFire has prevented any kind of hacking and enables us to comply with customer requirements."
"I would rate the stability as ten out of ten for IPFire."
"Good site categorization and application controls."
"It lets me monitor in live time if someone is 'hogging' bandwidth."
"For SMB segments, SonicWall performs well."

"The product’s filtering and URL-blocking features are valuable."
"Its ease of installation has improved my organization."

Cons

"Fortinet currently has many products bundled with FortiGate including the basic firewall and load balancer, and I think that they need to have separate product portfolios for each of these specialized services."
"The area that Fortinet may improve is customer support. When you have an incident, situation, or open a case, the support is not as good as Cisco or other platforms I have tested."
"The UTM filtering control could be improved."
"The support is the main thing that needs to be improved."
"Compared to some other products, the DLP is not at par for the moment."
"Its filtering is sometimes too precise or strict. We sometimes have to bypass and authorize some of the sites, but they get blocked."
"We would like to see better pricing."
"Sometimes, we open a ticket, and it is very difficult to get a solution."
"The graphical interface could be much better."
"Accessing the internet was a bit complicated."
"The lack of support is having me look into other solutions to replace SonicWALL."
"Its reporting can be improved. Currently, we cannot directly get the user names."
"The user support could be improved because you have to go outside and get that kind of support."
"I currently have two of the issues from SonicWall. One issue is that the IP is not the public IP. Sometimes it moves to an alternate source and I have to refresh the new IP then we can go on."
"The products' reporting can be improved."
"You need to be a certificate holder to set it up and configure it. It's really important because it looks easy, but it is complex."
"I would like to see lower antivirus pricing."
"We have been facing issues with reporting."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Fortinet is the least expensive solution."
"Fortinet FortiGate as a less expensive solution than Palo Alto."
"Its pricing is fine. It is on a yearly basis. Other than the licensing fee, there is no extra fee."
"The setup cost was good. The Egyptian pound is declining, and upgrading Fortinet FortiGate yearly costs about $2000 USD, which equals one hundred Egyptian pounds. I maintain a business relationship with the vendor and receive support from them."
"We pay $500 per year for the license."
"They are very competitive, but we like to have the factory warranty taken care of."
"We just pay a flat monthly fee to the vendor for the support."
"The pricing is better compared to other solutions like Check Point, Arista, or Cisco."
Information not available
"The price is fair."
"We have to pay yearly. Its licensing can be improved, and they should provide more features, such as AV, email filtering, and so on with the basic subscription."
"There are a few features that are licensed and there should be more that are licensed. The price of the solution is midrange compared to others, I have not had anyone complain."
"Licensing fees are on a monthly basis."
"The solution is moderately priced, where it's neither cheap nor expensive."
"It comes to a range between five hundred to seven hundred dollars."
"Getting licenses in our country, Ghana, is not easy. Though, once we have them, adding them is quick (about a day)."
"It is highly priced and has a slow performance compared to other firewalls."
