It has reduced our backup time, however backups do get skipped
I would like to see the pieces that they have put in the web only to be put into the thick client sitting on the desktop client. They moved a lot of the features to their web-based version of it. Because of the large number of databases that we have along with our backup, their web product can't handle it. So, we can't use it. So, we are missing out on a lot of the new features. The way the filtering goes, if you filter on your view, there is no indication that you have made a selection. Unless you can remember day-to-day that you may have something deselected or selected, your view may be different than you expect, and there is no visual indication of it.

Automation has improved alerts and file handling but script-based setup still needs simplification
OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is the automation tool I use. I think OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence is good for creating complex rules because it's coding, but it takes time to learn how to use it. OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence works well if you know the syntax very well and you have experience in creating scripts or REXX syntax; it would be very good and is a good tool, but it takes time to learn, so that is for experienced staff to work with. I would rate the product a six from one to ten. I cannot think of any additional features in the next release of OPS_MVS Automation Intelligence.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The compression, because it drastically reduces the disk space."
"I do like the central management console where you can see a global status for all your backups and manage restores."
"It is far better than the native SQL compressed backup utility, and even though we are seeing approximately 1.4 : 1 de-duplication ratio (using compression at Level 3) we've saved so much space that we still have more than 33% free space on our backup appliances."
"It has reduced our backup time and simplified our backup processes across all the servers."
"The benefits are the ability to do monitoring on your mainframe systems exactly the way you want to do it."
"With the automation pieces we can bring this region up or take this region down, and it allows us to always meet our time critical requirements."
"We used to us an IBM product, but OPS/MVS has a lot more flexibility in what we can do with it."
"It's a very stable product. I very much like the SSM stuff in it. The rules engine, it's awesome."
"Because we can define complex commands, the training of new operators is quicker. We can also put checks in place, that will prevent user errors."
"OPSMVS has made it possible to run our IT systems with fewer staff, due to the level of automation that we are able to use."
"Their technical support is incredible, immediately responsive, and even if it is not updated to Level 2 support sometimes, they chip in providing more detailed answers and options to fix the problem."
"We really do need this product, we have the necessity now because we have implemented for so long that we can't function without this product."

Cons

"Lots of room for improvement. I have never experienced anything as buggy as SQLsafe."
"Make sure you check your backups on a regular basis. Backups do get missed with this tool, for whatever reason."
"The way the filtering goes, if you filter on your view, there is no indication that you have made a selection."
"For a supposedly mature product, it lacks basic functionality that the built-in Microsoft SQL Server backup/restore programs provide and being told we'll be added to interested party list isn't very satisfying."
"I would like to see the pieces that they have put in the web only to be put into the thick client sitting on the desktop client."
"Performing a stop/restart of OPS/MVS could be a little smoother. Without special coding, some undesired tasks will be started and some necessary tasks will be stopped if we have to bounce OPS/MVS during the day."
"One of the things we've been wanting to do is to be able to automate off of different highlighted messages without actually knowing what the message is."
"Because of its age, it's a little bit difficult to modernize some of the integrations and some of the functions."
"I've seen a mobile app that allows you to get the system status from your phone. That's a really nice feature that I’d like to see."
"The interfaces to USS, CA UIM could be better."
"It’s a complex product. The initial installation is easy, but implementing various functions is a constant process."
"It definitely needs more web-based interface, to be more mobile-open. More APIs, more open source to it."
"Some of the command sequences are too long."
