Manages APIs and integrates microservices with redirection feature
IBM Cloud Pak for Integration includes monitoring capabilities to track the performance and health of your integrations. You can quickly roll back to a previous version if an issue arises. Additionally, it supports incremental deployments, allowing you to shift traffic to a new version of an API gradually. For example, you can start by directing 10% of traffic to the new version while the rest continue using the legacy version. If everything works as expected, you can gradually increase the traffic to the new version over time. IBM Cloud Pak for Integration has a client base that includes numerous organizations using AI and machine learning technologies. We leverage an open-source machine learning framework and integrate it with Kafka to help create and manage various products and data retrieval processes. For companies with private data, the framework first retrieves relevant data from a GitHub database, which is then combined with the final request before being sent to a language model like GPT. This ensures that the language model uses your specific data to generate responses. Kafka plays a key role by streaming real-time data from file systems and databases like Oracle and Microsoft SQL. This data is published to Kafka topics, then vectorized and used with artificial intelligence to enhance the overall process. It's like an old-fashioned approach. The best way is to redesign it with products such as Kafka. Overall, I rate the solution an eight out of ten.
Integration capabilities excel and support for varied platforms enhances communication across backend systems
We mainly use REST APIs, and the solution's integration capabilities are excellent. It allows communication with a number of back-end providers and data consolidation. The flexibility to develop APIs for various platforms, from front-end applications to ATM machines, is valuable. Code changes and migration are straightforward, and it supports identity and access management integration.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"It is a stable solution."
"The most preferable aspect would be the elimination of the command, which was a significant improvement. In the past, it was a challenge, but now we can proceed smoothly with the implementation of our policies and everything is managed through JCP. It's still among the positive aspects, and it's a valuable feature."
"Cloud Pak for Integration is definitely scalable. That is the most important criteria."
"In general, the solution works very, very well."
"The most valuable aspect of the Cloud Pak, in general, is the flexibility that you have to use the product."
"Redirection is a key feature. It helps in managing multiple microservices by centralizing control and access."
"CA API Management has been the driver for our digital transformation."
"My advice to those wanting to implement this solution is if they have the right resource, this is a really nice product and I recommend it because it's really flexible and they can build and customize with the vendor directly."
"CA APIM is the best product in the market."
"CA API Gateway provides rich policy sets in regards to XML and REST services, is great for all B2B integrations, and is a very agile component to set up and use."
"Containerization and the monetization module are quite unique for an API tool... In addition, the development time and rollout time are pretty quick."
"This product, at first blush, looks something like it's one of those weekend warrior tools, but it's not. It's an enterprise-class tool with the kind of usability that you wouldn't expect. And with that usability - how do you have your cake and eat it too? Well, it's because of the product's extensibility. It's very well-integrated with your existing Java library of processes and procedures, as well as your ability to write new extensions to it. You get so much of the base functionality but you don't give up the ability customize."
"The technical support provided is the best."
"Layer7 API Management is most valued for its drag-and-drop functionalities, the available policy options, and the excellent security features."

Cons

"Its queuing and messaging features need improvement."
"Enterprise bots are needed to balance products like Kafka and Confluent."
"What needs to be improved is the restriction that they have on the product."
"Setting up Cloud Pak for Integration is relatively complex. It's not as easy because it has not yet been fully integrated. You still have some products that are still not containerized, so you still have to run them on a dedicated VM."
"The initial setup is not easy."
"The pricing can be improved."
"I feel like Apigee's API product is more interactive. You can drag and drop with those, but it's a little more difficult in Layer7; it's less user-friendly compared to that Apigee product."
"I was hoping that there would be some deeper dive Gateway training than their two day workshop and the self-paced study provided."
"Every time you touch something in the Policy Manager you think, "Well, that's a GUI, humans need to go in and do something with it.""
"One specific feature that we need is the ability to authenticate directly to the server with API data. It's not complex nowadays. This is a feature that we need and CA doesn't have it."
"Some of the things that we see as room of improvement are how do you integrate with other systems out there."
"Increase tools for manipulation of JSON messages."
"Right now, the portal lacks many features."
"Provide complete documentation with examples of usage on its build in assertion/function."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution's pricing model is very flexible."
"It is an expensive solution."
"There are various licensing models for Layer7 API Management. We have to buy additional licenses to get new versions."
"It depends on your use case of course, how much you want to go with that, because it can get pricey and depends on the size of your company."
"We weren't comfortable with the pricing of licensing. It was slightly more expensive than its competitors."
"It's my manager who takes care of the pricing. But I keep on hearing that it's a little pricey, it's on the higher side. That is what he says."
"Licenses are required to operate the product, but I don't know much about the validity periods attached to it."
"There are some costs for maintenance that we are charged, but that seems fair because we get the support."
"APIs can be developed to provide security. We can show them in one single pane of glass, such as the CA API Management API Developer Portal. It is there that we can provide the monetization for their APIs and what is happening on third-party applications, like Paytm or BookMyShow."
"I feel that it is costly for medium-sized companies."
