API management has strengthened security and monitoring but still needs better support and tooling
There are areas of IBM API Connect that need to be improved. I want what Gravitee made, which is much better. Gravitee made many samples for different use cases. First of all, they made examples of use cases, codes, and what the module expects and what the module returns for multiple examples and use cases inside the development. I do not even have to go to the documentation website because everything is included inside the tool when I work on it. This is great, in fact. IBM API Connect should show examples. One other thing is the support. The support of IBM is in India. Every time I want to ask something, they say they need logs, they want this, they want that. Gravitee API asks me to explain the problem without asking a thousand times as if it is a request for a green card in the USA. Then they really explain quickly. IBM is a big company, so everything is standardized with the approach of "You do that, you do that, you request that. If you do not have that, you do not reply to the client." Clients want flexibility today, even if it is a huge company. A stressed client is a client that will want to change to other flexible solutions. When everything is fine, we do not care, but when there is stress and problems, that is when the customer of IBM evaluates the tool really. It is when there are problems. IBM makes a lot of efforts on sales and technical sales, and then that is it.

Authentication mechanism is easy to implement but improvement is needed in documentation
For API security purposes, we use the tool to host all our APIs. This allows us to take advantage of the security features provided by the platform. With the solution, we can implement rules such as rate limiting and restricting the number of API calls for each user. It acts as a secure gateway…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Most of the business value that we are getting out of this solution is that it provides DevOps integration and a catalog for microservices, and we are able to share those APIs instantly within the organization; even if we want to share it outside publicly, then we can have those capabilities."
"At the end of the day, it's a great product, I can't fault it for now."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is to have the APIs available across different verticals in the company."
"We really like the runtime capabilities of IBM API Connect. The creation of products and the control of the monetization and hit rate are some of the features which we've found very valuable."
"This is a strong and stable solution."
"The solution is very scalable because it's on the cloud."
"As far as API Connect, I think it offers us more flexibility with our application and potentially would allow third parties to come in and develop for us."
"The developer portal has been the most useful feature."
"It allowed us to publish and replace pre-essential transactions in one place, with a uniformity in terms of control and policies."
"Its completeness feature for the large enterprises, in my case for the government, is the most valuable feature of this product."
"The interface is good, and the policies that it uses as opposed to the features that it has in terms of security and the throughput management and those aspects are intuitive."
"Good interface, intuitive solution."
"The tool's authentication mechanism is easy to implement. We had to define a few parameters."

Cons

"A lot of the features require improvement, such as better integration with the other suites of the product and a more secured way to put it on the cloud."
"It lacks the ability for billing and metering the API usage to invoicing in v3, however, v4 does have this."
"Possible improvement is mainly around having more of the cloud oriented architecture bringing stability in adding new capabilities around security."
"Debugging could be improved."
"The developmental process is not quite user-friendly."
"The only downside where improvements are needed is probably on the licensing side."
"The installation was difficult with the IBM toolkit."
"I would like to see automation of the installation. If there could be a single-click function where you could automate everything, that would be helpful."
"The version that we have is very old."
"We actually did reach out to the technical support and it was all right, not great. We didn't get the answers we needed."
"Akana API Management needs to improve its documentation."
"The product has new features that we are going to implement in the next few months, such as API management and analytic reporting."
"Lacks an integrated billing feature."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price of the solution is very expensive, it can turn many customers away."
"We pay for the IBM API Connect monthly. We only need to pay the standard licensing fee."
"The price for IBM API Connect is reasonable. It's $20,000 to $30,000 yearly for a subscription, and the pricing could vary around $40,000 per year, per subscription. Its price is reasonable for customers who have around sixty million API calls yearly for unlimited environments."
"Pricing for IBM API Connect varies, e.g. it could be subscription-based. Deploying it on private cloud also means you have to own most of the software licensing."
"It should be cheaper. It has a yearly licensing."
"It can be quite expensive. It's okay for large-scale usage but quite expensive for smaller-scale implementations."
"It is an expensive solution. The licensing model is based on a per-subscription and per-subscriber end-user basis, meaning the price is determined by the end-users of the platform."
"IBM API Connect could be cheaper."
"For us, the pricing and licensing policies were for an on-premise installation with a fixed cost structure, that matched our budgeting policies."
