Has supported smooth channel partner integration and data analysis for several years
We use the existing services hosted in Microsoft Azure API Management without making any changes. For transformation capabilities, we utilize ADF, Data Factory instead of Microsoft Azure API Management. Regarding security features in Microsoft Azure API Management, we utilize token bearer authentication. As retailers with integration to our channel partners, we haven't experienced any security issues with Microsoft Azure API Management since it isn't exposed to external parties. We use a basic Azure function hosted in Microsoft Azure API Management rather than the integrated developer portal. Tracking analytics and performance analytics in Microsoft Azure API Management is straightforward. We use basic features for performance analytics and log analytics due to additional subscription charges. We enabled log analytics for Microsoft Azure API Management in the past month to investigate issues such as unreachable endpoints or request timeouts.

Authentication mechanism is easy to implement but improvement is needed in documentation
For API security purposes, we use the tool to host all our APIs. This allows us to take advantage of the security features provided by the platform. With the solution, we can implement rules such as rate limiting and restricting the number of API calls for each user. It acts as a secure gateway…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup was quite easy as it is a managed service."
"Microsoft Azure API Management has many valuable features. One is the developer portal, that's very useful for teams. The tool also provides layers of security. I also found the caching, automatic documentation, and version management functionalities most valuable."
"The solution is reliable and very stable."
"The most valuable features of Microsoft Azure API Management are the easy configuration and deployment with automation."
"I like the stability and the ease of use."
"Other than that, it's easy to use and start up."
"The integration and API Connect are valuable when we need to connect with web services and REST APIs."
"The package as a whole is useful for our customers."
"The interface is good, and the policies that it uses as opposed to the features that it has in terms of security and the throughput management and those aspects are intuitive."
"Good interface, intuitive solution."
"Its completeness feature for the large enterprises, in my case for the government, is the most valuable feature of this product."
"The tool's authentication mechanism is easy to implement. We had to define a few parameters."
"It allowed us to publish and replace pre-essential transactions in one place, with a uniformity in terms of control and policies."

Cons

"From my understanding, there are some constraints around governance and service-to-service intercommunication managing priorities and our own governance."
"The API gateway can be very complex."
"In terms of improvement, it would be helpful if they could develop an on-premises option."
"The cloud deployment of Microsoft Azure API Management could be better."
"The external policies are impossible to look at and configure."
"Some of the DevOps stuff could be easier to work with. The migration paths are a little complicated, and moving code around could be more seamless."
"Could use clearer configuration when it comes to API policies."
"It would be better if it were easier to transition to Azure from JIRA. For example, different nomenclature must be performed when you shift to Azure from JIRA. JIRA's storage, tasks, and ethics are treated differently from Azure. Here they might become functions, which is not an option in JIRA because that nomenclature difference is there. If someone has to get into the nomenclature, then there can be different tasks from clients, and here, they may be treated as functions. JIRA has sub-tasks, but sub-tasks don't exist in Azure. The nomenclature and the linking between ethics and a function and a story are different, and people may have to learn to adapt to the new nomenclature."
"The product has new features that we are going to implement in the next few months, such as API management and analytic reporting."
"We actually did reach out to the technical support and it was all right, not great. We didn't get the answers we needed."
"The version that we have is very old."
"Lacks an integrated billing feature."
"Akana API Management needs to improve its documentation."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Azure is a pay-as-you-go model. You build out your virtual environment and pay a monthly price depending on CPU cores, storage, etc."
"Licensing fees are paid on an annual basis."
"The solution appears cheaper because it's a cloud SaaS model."
"It's being paid monthly."
"There are no additional costs above the main license."
"The price of the solution is reasonable compared to others."
"It's pay as you go. The subscription packages have room for different scales. It's calculated by the number of apps or computers you use. You do not have to use the enterprise subscription. These subscriptions have different pricing, so you can find one to meet your needs for scalability."
"Based on the resources that we are leveraging, the price we are paying to use this solution is slightly higher than other competitors. In a few cases, it has its own advantage in some resources."
"For us, the pricing and licensing policies were for an on-premise installation with a fixed cost structure, that matched our budgeting policies."
