Helps to run simulations and create prototypes which reduces the costs
HPC's neutral configuration is not difficult. The tool's deployment depends on your understanding of its architecture and use cases. I rate it a three out of five. A regular cluster will take two weeks to set up. OEMs helped us with the physical hardware installation. Once the cluster was running, our team configured the software and networks.

There is progress in performance and stability, but further advancements are needed for end-user satisfaction
VMware Cloud Foundation's best features include its advanced capabilities, security purposes, and performance levels. The solution offers efficient licensing options. Previously, vSphere essential was available, but now it has moved to VMware Cloud Foundation 8.0. It includes advanced features such as lifecycle manager, patching level, and cluster level patching options. The solution now offers auto-deployment of VMs. Previously, I had to use the content library, right-click, and create VMs manually. With VMware Cloud Foundation, auto-deployment is possible by simply right-clicking and assigning a specific DHCP IP, enabling physical to vCenter level communication for automatic VM deployment. The workload portability feature in VMware Cloud Foundation provides good workload balance. For instance, in a cluster level with four to five ESXi hosts, each host has minimum resources allocated for CPU and memory, resulting in significantly reduced utilization at the VMware Cloud Foundation level.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Our customers can publish scientific reports in prestigious magazines. HPC offers strong computing capabilities."
"HPC speeds up delivery time and reduces costs. It comes with the capability and flexibility to understand how engineering products work. You can understand the outcome without spending time and money."
"The most valuable features in VMware Cloud Foundation are life cycle management and ease of use."
"The automation capabilities of VMware Cloud Foundation demonstrate excellent performance because of the private cloud automation, where you can develop things and manage the software into the data section, which is the SDDC."
"The solution is very stable."
"You can use VMware Cloud Foundation with hyper-converge."
"We use VMware Cloud Foundation mainly for the virtualization part, and because it's a suite where everything is combined, we have vSphere and vCenter."
"All features of VMware Cloud Foundation are valuable to us, as it covers every industry standard protocol and requirement protocol, and it assists in meeting our requirements for host-level redundancy on both the primary site and the DR site."
"The initial setup is straightforward and easy."
"We are using it for infrastructure automation."

Cons

"The solution is expensive."
"There was a buzz around the integration of quantum computing and HPC. However, I don't see a real-life use case for it."
"There may be room for improvement in the resource allocation feature."
"From a stability perspective, there may be some issues."
"Life cycle management is an area for improvement."
"The use of cloud and other integrations need to be improved and made easier."
"They need to offer more support for Mac."
"The platform needs improvement in terms of troubleshooting."
"The price could be better. VMware Cloud Foundation is overpriced, but I think we get what we pay for. It would be better if it were cheaper because it would be easier to go to customers and get them to buy it. We'd get more projects, and that would be great."
"VMware Cloud Foundation can improve the process of upgrading. For example, if you want to upgrade or migrate any component it is very complex."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It is quite expensive."
"VMware Cloud Foundation is expensive compared to one of its competitors."
"If our customer has the option to buy a server for $4,000 or $5,000, but VMware asks for two-person licensing $7,000 to $8,000, which is more than the hardware price. So sometimes, the customer cannot pay for it because it's too expensive."
"The tool's price is slightly on the higher side, but I guess you think there is no one-to-one comparison with other tools. The licensing part has become easier, while earlier, it was quite complex."
"There is an annual license required to use the solution."
"The licensing is expensive compared with Hyper V and Unitech's platform."
"The pricing of VMware Cloud Foundation could improve, it is expensive."
"I rate the tool's pricing a seven out of ten."
