Has improved incident response with better root cause visibility and supports flexible on-call scheduling
Datadog needs to introduce more hard limits to cost. If we see a huge log spike, administrators should have more control over what happens to save costs. If a service starts logging extensively, I want the ability to automatically direct that log into the cheapest log bucket. This should be the case with many offerings. If we're seeing too much APM, we need to be aware of it and able to stop it rather than having administrators reach out to specific teams. Datadog has become significantly slower over the last year. They could improve performance at the risk of slowing down feature work. More resources need to go into Fleet Automation because we face many problems with things such as the Ansible role to install Datadog in non-containerized hosts. We mainly want to see performance improvements, less time spent looking at costs, the ability to trust that costs will stay reasonable, and an easier way to manage our agents. It is such a powerful tool with much potential on the horizon, but cost control, performance, and agent management need improvement. The main issues are with the administrative side rather than the actual application.

A powerful service that is very stable and scalable
It's a very powerful service, you have to use your training and understand how to work it. After that, it's very easy to collect and to use. It may be hard to use for the administrators. It's like a Ferrari, if you're a very good driver you'll go to 300 but you have to know how to drive it. If you have a Ferrari but you don't know how to use it, it's not going to be good. Also, it's very important to understand what the customer needs to decide on what kind of products you are going to use, and what product and what solution to implement. I would rate the solution nine out of 10.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The service catalog is very useful; we use this type of offering for our microservices applications, and it gives a good view of flow, which is a must when we have different developers working on different services, and having the trace and log features has been useful in order to locate the microservice for the on-call person."
"Datadog has clear dashboards and good documentation."
"The solution is stable."
"The most valuable aspect for us is to have everything in the same place."
"The most valuable aspects of the product include the APM and profiler."
"Real user monitoring has made triaging any possible bugs our users might face a lot easier."
"The infrastructure monitoring capabilities, especially for our Kubernetes clusters, have helped us optimize resource allocation and reduce costs."
"We have seen a clear return on investment with Datadog, mainly in terms of time saved and faster incident handling."
"My experience with technical support has been perfect."
"The product is excellent."

Cons

"Other than being restricted by cost, Datadog's scalability has been a little bit of a challenge to do the initial installation of the agent."
"The product is quite complex, and there are so many features that I either didn't know about or wasn't sure how to use."
"Particularly as Datadog starts offering more platform capabilities like APM, Watchdog, shift left initiatives like instrumentation, continuous testing, intelligent test runner, and Synthetic and real user monitoring, the UI can become more and more clunky, giving users a very frustrating experience."
"Sometimes, for their newer features, they charge as if it's fully fleshed out, even though it is a newer feature and it may have less stuff than their other items."
"The error traceability is an area that can be improved."
"The solution should provide alerts for cloud outages."
"Our licensing fees are paid on a monthly basis. It's quite expensive."
"One thing we have run into is that it is so easy to add monitoring that we turn on things without really understanding the costs."
"The presentation of the features can be improved. It can be more user-friendly for the visual part of the portal and to allow the customer to be able to use."
"However, the license is expensive."
"The presentation of the features can be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing seems reasonable. It depends on the size of your organization, the size of your infrastructure, and what portion of your overall business costs go toward infrastructure."
"Pricing seemed easy until the bill came in and some things were not accounted for."
"My advice is to really keep an eye on your overage costs, as they can spiral really fast."
"If you do your homework, you'll find that if you're really concerned with cost, it's good."
"At my last company, we did see ROI, specifically around response time. We could get to mission critical things that were down and losing revenue on immediately. So, the product paid itself back."
"The pricing came up a bit compared to their competitors. It is not that the price has risen, but that the competitors have gone down. They keep adding more features that I would have expected to be baked in at a more nominal price. I have been increasingly dissatisfied with the pricing, but not enough to jump ship."
"I am not satisfied with its licensing. Its payment is based on the exported data, and there was an explosion of the data for three or four weeks. My customer was not alerted, and there was no way for them to see that there has been an explosion of data. They got a big invoice for one or two months. The pricing model of Datadog is based on the data. The customer was quite surprised about not being alerted about this explosion of data. They should provide some kind of alert when there is an increase in usage."
"Our licensing fees are paid on a monthly basis."
"The license is expensive."
