Mainframe modernization architecture at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
AI-driven monitoring has transformed batch anomaly detection and improved mainframe performance
BMC AMI Data monitors technical components very well, but end-to-end business transaction tracing is still limited. For instance, the flow of business transactions from order creation to generation of the ASN is limited. I would say it would be great if cross-system business flow visibility were improved. Moreover, I would say stronger AI root cause accuracy is needed. Current AI capabilities are useful but still heavily rule-based in many environments. I would also suggest having a somewhat easier UI for better user experience, as it remains operational heavy, menu-driven, and less intuitive for new engineers. Cleaner dashboards, drill-down visualizations, interactive topology maps, and easier search or filtering would be beneficial. Additionally, better cloud and hybrid visibility along with native event-driven monitoring would improve the solution. I feel there are still some features that need improvement. Particularly, business cross-functional visibility and cross-systems visibility need enhancement.

Delivers consistent performance and enables advanced analytics across complex data environments
Teradata stands out as a solid platform for managing and analyzing large volumes of data. Its architecture allows information to be processed efficiently while maintaining stable performance, even in highly demanding environments. One of its most notable strengths is the ability to run complex queries at high speed, which is essential for organizations that require timely and reliable analytics. Teradata offers a well-integrated ecosystem that supports working with different types of data and enables scalability as organizational needs grow. Its focus on advanced analytics, integration with modern business intelligence tools, and the ability to operate both on-premise and in the cloud make it a versatile solution for data warehousing and large-scale processing. Teradata's stability, technological maturity, and the availability of strong documentation and best practices are noteworthy. I consider Teradata to be a tool with great potential for any organization looking to enhance its analytical capabilities, optimize data processing, and move toward more data-driven decision-making. Teradata stands out as a solid platform for managing a large volume of data in different projects. Its architecture allows information to be processed efficiently while maintaining stable performance, even in high-demanding environments. A well-integrated AI ecosystem that supports working with different types of data and enables scalability as organizational needs grow across different kinds of enterprises or organizations. The focus on advanced analytics integration with modern business intelligence tools is particularly valuable. Teradata combines a powerful parallel process and optimizing SQL engine with a highly scalable architecture allowing businesses to execute complex queries and analytics in real-time. It supports multi-cloud, hybrid, and on-premise environments, giving organizations flexibility to choose the setup that best aligns with their strategy. One of the biggest strengths is the ability to unify disparate data sources and support high concurrency, enabling different teams, such as analytics, operations, BI, and data science, to access consistent, trusted data across the enterprise.

Pros

"BMC AMI Data has had a positive impact on my organization by improving the visibility and reliability of our mainframe."
"BMC AMI Data has positively impacted my organization as the data's performance is faster, reduced the storage cost through optimization, automatically diagnosed the problems, and resolved them accordingly."
"I have reduced a lot of incident failures since using BMC AMI Data, am able to see a significant improvement in CICS transactional response times and overall region health, and have stopped the storage violations, transactional bottlenecks, and task buildups that I faced earlier, with this improvement very visible in my high-volume real-time environments."
"The biggest difference in BMC AMI Data is the database performance and optimization capability that has made a very significant difference in our system."
"BMC AMI Data has positively impacted the organization because it saved time and reduced errors."
"Teradata's pretty fast."
"In Data Lab, you can schedule any testing you want to do in production. You can take a small subset of data from production, copy it there, and run all your tests. It reduces your testing costs because it's all in the lab."
"Teradata effectively uses parallelism to the granular level, performing better than other databases."
"Teradata's scalability is one of its best features."
"Teradata is a 100% stable environment."
"The most important thing we get out of the product is the intelligence that we derive."
"IntelliFlex is easy to scale - one of its best features is that you can upscale it to the size you want."
"Building a data warehouse with Teradata has definitely helped a lot of our downstream applications to more easily access information."

Cons

"I have had a good experience but there are a few improvements. The user interface feels a bit outdated compared to modern monitoring tools."
"I think there is nothing to be improved in BMC AMI Data, but I believe from the customer service point of view, it should be more convenient rather than mailing and waiting for twenty-four hours to get a response."
"I would like BMC AMI Data to have a modern user interface."
"BMC AMI Data monitors technical components very well, but end-to-end business transaction tracing is still limited."
"BMC AMI Data could be improved in backup timing, as it should be faster compared to the current situation."
"There is a need to improve performance in high transaction processes, as well as the reporting system."
"The scalability could be better. The on-premises solution is always more complicated to scale."
"Teradata needs to pay attention to the cloud-based solution to make sure it runs smoothly."
"It should be compatible and free on CLOUD/ AWS. Currently many DB's on AWS are free, Teradata is also on Amazon Web Services, but its charged and no documentation available to practice those LABS."
"The current operational approach needs improvement."
"It needs a teaching web site with more training on third-party tools used for BI."
"I would like more security and speed."
"The solution could improve by having a cloud version or a cloud component. We have to use other solutions, such as Amazon AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Snowflake for the cloud."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"It comes at a notably high cost for what it offers."
"The price of Teradata is expensive. However, what they deliver they are outstanding. If you're looking for an inexpensive solution to run a database, this isn't your tool. It's the Ferrari of databases for data warehousing."
"Make sure you have the in-house skills to design and support the solution, as relying on external sources is extremely costly and tends to lock you into specific platforms, tools, and paradigms."
"The price of Teradata is on the higher side, and I think that it where they lose out on some of their business."
"I rate the product price a nine on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap and ten is expensive."
"When looking into implementing this product, pricing is the main issue followed by technical expertise."
"Teradata is expensive but gives value for money, especially if you don't want to move your data to the cloud."
"Teradata is expensive, so it's typically marketed to big customers. However, there have been some changes, and Teradata is now offering more flexible pricing models and equipment leasing. They've added pay-as-you-go and cloud models, so it's changing, but Teradata is generally known as an expensive high-end product."
