Provides ransomware protection, does good reporting, and is close to perfect for our use case
The main challenge that I have had with it was no line of support, but I've anyway taken away the Linux machine that I was using. So, I don't need that anymore. I'm migrating my Exchange to the cloud. So, I probably will stop using the exchange backup side of it sometime next year, but the rest of the virtual machines that I have on-premises are very well covered by it. To be able to back up my online Exchange, I know there is a backup in the cloud, but I prefer to have something physical with something on my premises as well. It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it.

Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We managed to have good backups which were easy to recover, and easy backup of MS Exchange and SQL databases."
"Now that we are using the solution, we get notified online when our backups are done."
"I would definitely recommend this solution to others."
"The most valuable features of BackupAssist are ease of use, configure is simple, and more importantly, ease of recovery. If you needed to do a complete system recovery or another recovery it is straightforward."
"I find BackupAssist very convenient to work on and I really like its user interface."
"I get my reports. It is generally very reliable. Unless there is a major change, it doesn't stop backing up. I've got my server room set up with everything connected to the same power, and I never have power issues or failures of backups because a sub-site has gone off."
"We can configure the notifications themselves so that the right people get the notifications. This is very helpful. It allows key stakeholders to know if backups have happened and to remind each other to check the backups if something is not right."
"What you want is software that can be relied upon at the moment when a server goes down, you can backup simply and reliably, BackupAssist fulfilled this criterion."
"We frequently use the granular restore option for when our users accidentally delete files or to recover emails from mailboxes. We have found that to be a must-have feature and it comes with the solution at no extra cost."
"The interface is user-friendly and even if our tech isn't onsite, we can work with the owners to confirm that the data will be restored with no issues."
"It is a great lesson in keeping it simple."
"VM backup and the item level recovery are the most valuable features."
"Since moving to Altaro, we feel that backing up and restoring files has become much more efficient in our organization."
"This solution is stable."
"Altaro is always our go-to VM backup software."
"Generally, the entire program is brilliant, and there isn't any one feature that I can pick out."

Cons

"The solution needs a dashboard or some form of central control from which you can manage all backups."
"In the future I would like to see more support for Linux."
"It stopped doing my backups after I did the last update on it."
"One issue I had with this program, was that I couldn't get it to back up my Linux virtual machines."
"Many solutions become stagnant over time. However, BackupAssist has been consistent in updates but they must continue to innovate and improve to avoid stagnation."
"Has a few problems working with snapshots time-outs and failed backups."
"However it has No support for Tape Drive backup – So no Disk-to-tape backup is possible."
"It would be nice to see a feature that backs up the host so that, in case of a server failure, an entire server could be restored all at once."
"Sometimes, due to disk space and VSS, we have experienced stability issues."
"The scalability of the solution is limited."
"The cloud backup and VMware support (now available in the latest releases), could do with some improvement."
"The solution needs multi-platform support as it is currently only available for VMware and Hyper-V. It also lacks support for physical servers and workstations."
"Being able to backup the actual host machine would be an improvement for us."
"Unable to restore a VM when I needed it. Tried multiple hosts. Connected via gig switch and would never complete."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The product pricing here in Zimbabwe is good, I cannot complain."
"There's a yearly licensing cost. The costs might be around $2000 USD annually."
"The cost of the solution is reasonable and there are add-on options that can be purchased. I have used other solutions that are a lot more expensive that are not as good. The ability to get support is very simple and very reasonable from a cost standpoint."
"It's on a yearly basis, but I'm not the one who does the licensing on that. I don't have any figures, but it's on a yearly basis, and I believe it's reasonable."
"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"The price is great for the utility you get and the licensing has never caused any issues with my company."
"Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support."
"VMware is a little pricey, but it is a good solution and priced similar to other products."
"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"The pricing is okay,"
