Serverless workflows have boosted rapid AWS development but still need better CI and automation
Serverless has many advantages, and it is very easy to handle with a cloud solution. However, there are a few concerns about the limitations. Especially when I work with Lambdas, there are maximum Lambda timeouts. Likewise, there are several things from Serverless, such as maximum file uploads. Serverless can be improved by addressing the challenges faced when we have the first infrastructure. Sometimes it is hard because we need to manually create things such as Cognito pools. While 90 percent of the time is automated, more automation would be better. If Serverless provided CI/CD capabilities, that would also be great, as currently it only allows for manual deployments. Additionally, when working with cloud services, Serverless allows the use of LocalStack or Serverless Dev, but I think Serverless Dev might need simplification for easy access without organization registration. When considering needed improvements, I get frustrated with Lambda time and similar issues, which are actually not related to Serverless but rather are AWS issues. However, when discussing Serverless, the main points I see require improvement from the Serverless end.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"There are plenty of features available such as the ability to test applications for issues and a user-friendly dashboard."
"It is a very powerful tool that does what an enterprise architect needs it to do and it supports the business in knowing more about the business so that they can do better."
"The ease of modeling and the ease of showing interconnectivity and relationships is the most valuable. It is fairly simple and out of the box. It is customizable in many ways. It is a pretty good tool."
"It is a very stable solution...The initial setup of Avolution ABACUS is very easy."
"The portfolio management is really good, and the dashboard and the reports for the end-to-end impact analysis are really good."
"Avolution ABACUS allows for flexible enterprise architecture analysis."
"You can design using a diagram tool installed on your desktop, a key difference from other vendors."
"For what it does it is very good and a reasonable price."
"Previously, when we were deploying it on VPS, our whole day was spent on setting up a VPS and setting up all the CI/CD pipelines, but with Serverless it is instant and in just 10 to 15 minutes you are up and running."
"Serverless has positively impacted my organization by making us more agile in giving releases, which has benefited my teams by allowing us to continuously maintain our Node packages and different scripts, which are now more easily manageable."
"Serverless has positively impacted my organization as it has become the de facto standard for any POCs I have been doing, unless something specific is required that demands an on-demand instance."
"Serverless positively impacts my organization by being really cost-effective and serving as a production performance testing tool, as we increase the load, it automatically increases the CPUs and RAM without needing any manual intervention or heavy servers for this type of testing."
"The best feature of Serverless is cost; when the application is in use, then it will incur cost, unlike traditional servers where it is the cost of all the uptime."
"My advice to others looking into using Serverless is that you can use it if you want to save money, if you don't want to manage servers, if you only want to be charged for the amount of time you use, and if you want to run code and ad hoc tasks."
"In terms of time or cost saved compared to before using Serverless, I save approximately 60 percent of my development time because everything is very lightweight and gives me the freedom to work within Serverless."
"After migrating to serverless, we saved about 50% of the cost that was occurring in the previous architecture, and our operation time also got reduced by about 40% compared to the previous architecture due to the use of Step Functions, Lambda, and Aurora Serverless, which are all services managed by AWS."

Cons

"Having more control over page size is lacking in this product. Print utilization also needs to be improved."
"It is vastly scalable but you can't run it on a Mac or Linux so it has limitations."
"It doesn't have the simulation capability, which would be helpful in doing some business process analysis and improvements."
"There are probably some things that Avolution could add to the product to enhance it and keep up with what some other products are introducing."
"Based on my experience, this is not a product that I recommend at the moment."
"This solution needs to improve resource usage because it has a heavy browser. It is easy to use, but it takes time to load and to run other programs."
"Their local presence in the Middle East could be scaled more, particularly in customer service. It would be good if they'd also have mobile dashboards for executive management out of the box."
"They should take more initiative to implement things that competing products have already come out with."
"Serverless is not suited for production environments."
"With the upcoming technology change and the migration towards Generative AI and the exploration of large language models, it would be quite helpful if serverless services evolve with that."
"Transitioning from servers to Serverless results in a price increase due to the additional maintenance and patches AWS provides, but if costs could be reduced, more customers would consider moving to Serverless architecture."
"The biggest area for improvement in Serverless is around cold start latency, especially for applications that aren't constantly active."
"I see that the local development setup in Serverless is more complex, so if you provide examples or automation that we can test and deploy locally on a local machine, then automatically shifting all methods or functions into production would significantly improve efficiency."
"Sometimes we see old results instead of new results when events trigger."
"I would say in the debugging, we could maybe improve or in monitoring."
"I choose eight out of ten because to go ahead with Serverless, we need to do YAML file creation and other format file creation."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"My company makes annual payments toward the licensing costs of the solution. Considering the product's capabilities, its prices are very reasonable."
"The cost of Avolution ABACUS is reasonable, given the features they offer in comparison to other tools."
"It is competitive. It is not chump change. I am just using the studio version. I am not using the full enterprise version, which would probably cost me three times more for single-use, but it gives a lot more capability and analysis. It is server-based as well, and it is reasonably priced compared to a lot of the other tools. There are other tools that have other sorts of capabilities, but in order to use them, you'd really have to have like 50 users for the price to become justifiable."
"To get a fairly extensive license for Enterprise Architects from Spark is approximately US $400.00, maybe less, but with Avolution Abacus it was approximately US $2000.00 per year, and that includes maintenance with the Abacus tool."
"There is a subscription for this solution. We are on an annual subscription because you sometimes receive special offers the longer you subscribe."
"This solution is expensive for some people's budgets and they need to offer a Lite version at a cheaper price"
"It is expensive."
"The solution's pricing is not an issue."
