Serverless workflows have boosted rapid AWS development but still need better CI and automation
Serverless has many advantages, and it is very easy to handle with a cloud solution. However, there are a few concerns about the limitations. Especially when I work with Lambdas, there are maximum Lambda timeouts. Likewise, there are several things from Serverless, such as maximum file uploads. Serverless can be improved by addressing the challenges faced when we have the first infrastructure. Sometimes it is hard because we need to manually create things such as Cognito pools. While 90 percent of the time is automated, more automation would be better. If Serverless provided CI/CD capabilities, that would also be great, as currently it only allows for manual deployments. Additionally, when working with cloud services, Serverless allows the use of LocalStack or Serverless Dev, but I think Serverless Dev might need simplification for easy access without organization registration. When considering needed improvements, I get frustrated with Lambda time and similar issues, which are actually not related to Serverless but rather are AWS issues. However, when discussing Serverless, the main points I see require improvement from the Serverless end.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"You can design using a diagram tool installed on your desktop, a key difference from other vendors."
"For what it does it is very good and a reasonable price."
"Avolution ABACUS allows for flexible enterprise architecture analysis."
"Scalable and stable tool for roadmapping and modeling, with a good dashboard, end-to-end impact analysis, and portfolio management."
"This product is very strong in terms of the meta-model because you can customize a lot according to the business plan."
"It is a great tool for helping you understand what you really want to develop in an immature EA practice, providing a lot of flexibility in meeting a client stage and serving as an excellent early development tool."
"If you want a data model of flexibility and catalog scalability I would recommend it from that perspective."
"It's more than just an enterprise architecture tool as it has a lot of nice features, e.g. messaging, simulation, etc."
"Serverless offers easy scalability whenever I want it, with no problem when there are many requests."
"Serverless has positively impacted my organization because I can deploy without any downtime in the majority of cases."
"Serverless has made my day-to-day work easier because we don't have to set up an extra team, and with fewer resources we can use it effectively."
"My advice to others looking into using Serverless is that you can use it if you want to save money, if you don't want to manage servers, if you only want to be charged for the amount of time you use, and if you want to run code and ad hoc tasks."
"I can share specific metrics indicating Serverless's positive impact: I achieved 100% uptime, an impressive feat compared to traditional servers that often experience downtime during peak usage."
"Serverless offers a great pay-as-you-go model that is really excellent."
"The best feature of Serverless is cost; when the application is in use, then it will incur cost, unlike traditional servers where it is the cost of all the uptime."
"Serverless has positively impacted my organization by shifting our focus from infrastructure management to pure product delivery."

Cons

"They should take more initiative to implement things that competing products have already come out with."
"It needs more flexible analysis parameters and more capability as a BPM tool and doing BPM simulation, compared with Bonita BPM or Bizagi."
"Based on my experience, this is not a product that I recommend at the moment."
"This solution needs to improve resource usage because it has a heavy browser. It is easy to use, but it takes time to load and to run other programs."
"Having more control over page size is lacking in this product. Print utilization also needs to be improved."
"For some of the functionality, it might be a little complicated for people getting started."
"The reporting could be easier to configure."
"Their local presence in the Middle East could be scaled more, particularly in customer service. It would be good if they'd also have mobile dashboards for executive management out of the box."
"The scalability of Serverless is limited; as you increase your code, it is not scalable, and we need to think out of the box to solve several problems."
"Serverless can be improved by effectively handling large scale applications, as large scale applications would save more money."
"Improving Serverless is a difficult question because I am not deeply familiar with Serverless, so it is really difficult for me to judge."
"I see that the local development setup in Serverless is more complex, so if you provide examples or automation that we can test and deploy locally on a local machine, then automatically shifting all methods or functions into production would significantly improve efficiency."
"Serverless can be improved with more usage videos."
"When that account was temporarily blocked for an unjustified reason on their side, it became an issue for our whole project and caused significant costs and loss of users because of that single incident."
"With the upcoming technology change and the migration towards Generative AI and the exploration of large language models, it would be quite helpful if serverless services evolve with that."
"The biggest area for improvement in Serverless is around cold start latency, especially for applications that aren't constantly active."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The solution's pricing is not an issue."
"The cost of Avolution ABACUS is reasonable, given the features they offer in comparison to other tools."
"I'm paying on a yearly basis. I don't know whether it's a highly expensive tool or not. I'm getting a single version of it, and I don't have the enterprise part on it because I don't need the server component, and I don't need a web browser component. My estimate would be that it's a very reasonably priced tool given that you don't need to have licenses with everyone in order to get the information and the decision support capabilities out of the tool. You use the enterprise edition on top of the studio, which is the heart of the tool. I am not aware of any additional costs."
"The pricing is quite good compared to the competition and it is part of the reason we chose the product."
"It is expensive."
"This solution is expensive for some people's budgets and they need to offer a Lite version at a cheaper price"
"My company makes annual payments toward the licensing costs of the solution. Considering the product's capabilities, its prices are very reasonable."
"It is competitive. It is not chump change. I am just using the studio version. I am not using the full enterprise version, which would probably cost me three times more for single-use, but it gives a lot more capability and analysis. It is server-based as well, and it is reasonably priced compared to a lot of the other tools. There are other tools that have other sorts of capabilities, but in order to use them, you'd really have to have like 50 users for the price to become justifiable."
