Doesn't have many proprietary protocols but some models have stability issues
We had stability issues with Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches 6250. One issue is with licensing. When migrating from TDM to VoIP/ToIP solutions integrated on the same architecture, Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches don't have the same skill level or follow the same development path as companies like Cisco. They started integrating these solutions later, which is why there's a noticeable difference in advancement. Their main focus has been IP PBX solutions like OXO and OXE. They developed their IP environment and switches later, but not as deeply as other vendors. For example, they use Aruba access points and controllers for wireless solutions rather than developing their own portfolio. A specific challenge I've faced is with access points. Due to country code restrictions, the model sold in one region (like Europe) may not work properly in another. This affects channels and features related to the electronic environment specific to each country. To resolve this issue, I've had to reconfigure access points with the correct country code. The solution uses basic protocols. It doesn't have proprietary features like Cisco's EIGRP or advanced BGP features; it's based on standard protocols.

Enhanced broadcast management with trusted support and intuitive interfaces
Cisco is the best on the Metro Solution side and also strong in the broadcast sector. Cisco and Arista support the IP standard, which is more in demand nowadays for TV broadcasting. Cisco is trusted by most broadcast customers for data centers due to their experience and knowledge. Cisco Linksys switches offer ease of management and experience, especially for engineers holding CCNA certificates. The functionalities and measurements are similar across switches, but Cisco offers a useful web interface.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most valuable feature for me is the stability of the switches."
"The solution doesn't have many proprietary protocols like Cisco's. It mainly uses standard protocols like VRRP (similar to Cisco's HSRP), Spanning Tree, and Rapid Spanning Tree, which can sometimes cause integration issues."
"The most valuable feature for me is the stability of the switches."
"The product is stable. It does have only one power supply. They don't have a redundant power supply."
"The new web graphical interface is much better than before. We now have easy access to the command lines. They're all functional."
"The product's initial setup phase is not complex. It is easy to install the tool."
"It's easy to extend the stack, We don't use the smaller switches, but it's going well for the rest."
"The fibre ports that are 10 Gb capacity helped with the travel of a lot of regular as well as video data. Fibre can handle a lot more virtual data than copper twisted-pair, so we got a lot more data and a lot more traffic signals back through the fibre ports, faster, than with copper."
"Linksys switches are easy to use. You can pull the switch out of the box, plug it in, and it's going to work."
"Integration is much easier than with competitor products because it allows for segmentation inside the network."
"I use the tool because of its performance, reliability, and security."
"We have found the stability to be excellent."
"They are good for connecting users. These switches are very stable. We have been using them for three years, and we haven't had any problems."
"It is a stable and good product."
"There is no need for my company to pay for additional support."
"The most valuable feature is performance."

Cons

"The product would be better if it were completely compatible with other switching products."
"The network connection should be improved."
"My customer's team is not able to understand the loophole with Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches, but apart from that, there are no issues."
"OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches would be improved if cloud-based technology was provided in the Gulf region."
"In future versions, I would like to see improvements in networking speed."
"I find the CLI hard to use. I wish we could do more in the GUI interface."
"The commands for the switches could be easier as I find them more complex compared to those of Cisco."
"We had stability issues with Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches 6250. One issue is with licensing. When migrating from TDM to VoIP/ToIP solutions integrated on the same architecture, Alcatel-Lucent OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches don't have the same skill level or follow the same development path as companies like Cisco. "They need to develop better UI. Other products have a nice GUI."
"Pricing is an area with a shortcoming since the solution is expensive."
"Technical documents and other configuration-related information should be more freely available online."
"Cisco Linksys Ethernet Switches should improve its pricing."
"It would be ideal if, for private users that are not companies, the solution could be made even cheaper."
"Linksys support is subpar."
"The solution's support can use improvement because they are not very good at following up."
"I would like to see more manageability. That's primarily the reason why Linksys switches don't work in the enterprise space. They don't have the management and capabilities of other switches."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The licensing for OmniSwitch Ethernet Switches is a one-time purchase with no additional costs."
"It is an expensive solution."
"Pricing is cheap compared to other vendors. When we benchmark the tool against Meraki, Cisco, and others, it is usually more affordable."
"The pricing is reasonable compared to Aruba and HPE."
"It is costly. Because of its pricing, customers are not ready to buy Cisco solutions, and they are going for other brands."
"It is an expensive solution."
"The tool is expensive."
"The cost of Linksys switches is very reasonable and for a small enterprise like my company, it's perfect."

"The price of this solution is high, but it depends on the number of units that you want to order."
"Considering the problems that we have, Linksys is overpriced."
