Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The live packet capture feature enables quicker troubleshooting and better network monitoring."
"Network quality monitoring of multicast TV channels and other network monitorings."
"SolarWinds provides a good enterprise level of tools and covers the essential components."
"The connectivity of the solution is very good."
"The benefit of this solution is the reporting; we're able to report on and see our network in a graphical form, and we are able to detect when a device is added to a network."
"SolarWinds NPM is useful for any company that has business-critical applications running over a network and they want to monitor the network behavior."
"This solution provides one standardized platform for network device monitoring."
"As a large school district, I can tell you that NPM is very valuable to us."
"Being a global company with many highly-sensitive manufacturing lines and process control environments, SolarWinds consistently delivers real-time and accurate views into the deepest parts of our environment."
"Technical support is very helpful with our upgrades."

Cons

"The web interface is ok, but I would like to see if it was possible to group jobs better and to create our own dashboards."
"The only real caveat that we have or that I have an issue with is when I go on vacation, it's a little hard for me to go and modify alerts so that I don't get alerted about things when I'm on vacation."
"There isn't support available to us as they don't offer support in our country."
"I think the graphical environment, the GUI still has to be improved."
"The cost for monitoring interfaces is ridiculous."
"Network discovery missed many devices."
"Some features are missing (which will be in any product out there) but there is a community that either provides workarounds or the ability to request the improvement."
"I have not had a good experience with technical support because most of the time when I contact them, they first want to know whether you have a license."
"Better offline license management. I’ve had to get in touch with customer support several times simply to remove an expired license from our NPM servers (which have no connection to the public internet)."
