Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Network quality monitoring of multicast TV channels and other network monitorings."
"The live packet capture feature enables quicker troubleshooting and better network monitoring."
"At the moment, our main tool is SolarWinds NPM, and we keep using it, especially for monitoring cloud devices."
"This product is extremely flexible and customizable, with significant out-of-the-box monitoring and, with custom properties and some ingenuity, you can get it to do pretty much anything else."
"We have configured multiple alerts for our network devices, including routers and switches, so that we are notified if any interface goes down."
"The alerting and reporting capabilities of the tool are impressive"
"If you are looking for something which is very customizable for the customization of your network, then you should go with SolarWinds."
"The ability to pick and chose modules per need, but at the same time close and seamless integration once deployed: While everything is pretty complicated and fast moving, we do not want the monitoring and management software to be complicated."
"The simplicity of this product is a valuable feature; everything you need is easily accessible and the maintenance is low."
"SolarWinds NPM is generally used for network monitoring for all of the switches, networking equipment, as well as physical and virtual servers in the environment."

Cons

"The web interface is ok, but I would like to see if it was possible to group jobs better and to create our own dashboards."
"I would like to see more information on design, customization from the community, and a better certification department."
"User Interface needs improvement as it is not very attractive."
"I think Solar Winds NPM needs to create a profile with documentation responsibility."
"I would say the NPM toolset has room for improvement."
"You certainly can have stability issues."
"In terms of scalability, there is room for improvement. When you start monitoring, if you have so many interfaces and you're trying to monitor them at a faster interval, or a shorter interval, you get to a point where you need to request another node."
"The interface could be made more user-friendly."
"Application Performance Monitoring should be included in this solution."
