Central monitoring has improved outage alerts and now needs smarter detection and modern dashboards
Regarding the automated network topology and mapping feature in SolarWinds NPM, I am not satisfied with it. For static monitoring, it is acceptable. However, if it is possible, I would need a feature in SolarWinds in the future for some kind of malfunctioning detection, such as malware attacks or that type of environment. We did not have any facility to detect that in SolarWinds. I think it would be better to incorporate those types of features. Regarding customization options in SolarWinds, the ability to customize the dashboard has room for improvement. The dashboard is quite old, and we need some improvement in it. Nowadays, we have multiple tools with AI-based monitoring and web-based dashboards. SolarWinds also has a web-based dashboard, but I think there is scope for improvement in the UI. There may be other areas I would like to improve in SolarWinds NPM.

Pros

"Network quality monitoring of multicast TV channels and other network monitorings."
"The live packet capture feature enables quicker troubleshooting and better network monitoring."
"If you are looking for something which is very customizable for the customization of your network, then you should go with SolarWinds."
"It has helped us a ton to actually be proactive and not simply wait for customers to call."
"The most important feature is reporting. The reports that are generated are useful and they save a lot of time with respect to monitoring."
"In a few short years, SolarWinds has empowered us to provide robust infrastructure monitoring, including a converged view of our servers, both the physical and virtual servers, and the storage and application environments."
"SolarWinds NPM is used to monitor network components and solutions, and we used it to monitor downtime and latency between applications as well as the latency between services."
"SolarWinds is user-friendly with a manageable console."
"The most valuable feature is the way it monitors the environment, and how user-friendly the console is for the end-user. The interface is also very easy and it captures all the information very well."
"SolarWinds dashboard is very fast. Also, their interface is very good, it looks very user-friendly. The product allows me to see a summary of the network being monitored at a glance."

Cons

"The web interface is ok, but I would like to see if it was possible to group jobs better and to create our own dashboards."
"The price could be better."
"Technical Support: This is also an area where SolarWinds could do a lot better."
"Another feature I would ask for is for them to have this solution available for Linux systems instead of Windows."
"With regards to suggested areas of improvement for the product, I would like to see the price come down, and in addition I think the network element mapping tool is not as robust as it should be."
"Two or three of the core functions are still nested in Win32 apps on the server; but it seems that the foundation was laid in the current website for porting those functions over in the near future."
"They should increase its accuracy rate as SolarWinds's monitoring accuracy is not good if you compare it with other tools, like NNM/ScienceLogic/Zenoss."
"The solution's network discovery and node addition processes need more work."
"The interface can be a bit cumbersome at times."
