We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It works with any multi-databases, so it works with Sybase, SQL Server. Also, the performance is really good and it is easy to use.""The greatest feature is that it is very easy to have someone come in and jump right in. It is one of the nicest tools in terms of getting a person acquainted quickly.""It is UI friendly and has all the advantages of an ETL tool.""The performance and design of Informatica have been very valuable. I find the performance faster than, say, Oracle Data Integrator or DataStage.""We have found the PowerCenter and B2B data transformation most valuable.""The technical support for Informatica PowerCenter is good.""The most valuable feature of Informatica PowerCenter is the flow designer functionally. It is the best out of any ETL tool. Additionally, the solution is reliable and trustable in dealing with large data sources anytime. When we're using billions of data transactions, it's smooth.""It provides everything I need. Nothing is missing. PowerCenter is a good tool for on-premise databases."

"The most valuable feature of Splunk for data analysis is its ability to search using SPL and SQL.""It's not just one feature I like the most. Every person wants to collect and rate logs, and I value how the Splunk Enterprise Platform handles this. The most valuable part for us is setting up the alerts and reports to manage the logs and log metrics. We use it to support every tool across the entire bank.We are the ones who manage all the data, and if there's any issue, everything depends on the Splunk Enterprise Platform.""The product is very easy to use.""The most valuable feature of Splunk Enterprise Platform is that it's a customizable solution.""The solution is very good for monitoring compared to other tools.""It is a scalable solution.""Easy setup and maintenance""Splunk Enterprise is a wireless enterprise application that can be customized based on training."

Cons
"We had to take on a large volume of data from the legacy Sybase system. This was taking a very long time, i.e., more than a day. We were trying to improve it with partitions to gpload, but we were told that we can't go more than four partitions.""What I didn't like about it is that the platform itself is not great at distributed processing. When you need high parallel processing, it has some inherent issues. We had to use Java transformation, and it did not go very well. I have heard that it is going to the cloud, but we haven't tried that.""The pricing could be improved.""Integrated Reporting service should be more smoothly transitioned from view to function to be in sync with the main design.""Integrating new tools can be tricky and challenging.""If we could have the option of performance improvement within Informatica, and if it could have more features, that would be ideal.""PowerCenter has three clients. I wish they would consolidate everything into one GUI, not three. Also, we had a persistent issue with the Informatica Developer tool but it was solved when we migrated to the newest one.""It would be better if I could do all the work within a single window. If I'm working on any mapping and if I have to switch to sessions, I have to open a new window altogether. If I have to get into workflows, I have to open a new window. It was also very expensive. In the next release, I would like it to be more user-friendly."

More Informatica PowerCenter Cons →

"It's not easy or feasible to reach out to Splunk directly.""Splunk Enterprise Platform should include more integrations with other security tools.""The Splunk Enterprise Platform has room for improvement, particularly in automating the permissions process during app promotions. Currently, permissions are manually set when different teams request an application move to production, which is time-consuming. Automating this process would streamline operations by automatically assigning the appropriate permissions and roles to specific services or teams, reducing the need to review each request ticket manually.""Based on my experience, I've noticed areas for improvement, particularly in support. Developers typically interact with support personnel who may lack technical expertise when raising support tickets. This can result in delays as initial interactions involve sharing documents before escalation to higher support levels.""The solution’s pricing could be improved.""Areas for improvement include enhancing dashboards, reports, alerts, and the monitoring console.""The tool lacked in providing a shareable format. I had to use pivot tables and manually parse and edit the data to create a visualization-friendly format. It was helpful when we had an issue. What would make it stronger is if it were more proactive. For example, if it highlighted major incidents and their impact on users without digging through notifications, that would be better. Typically, the first question we get is, "Oh, we had an incident. How bad was it? How many customers were impacted?" So having that information pop up from the notification would be helpful.""Splunk is not an out-of-the-box solution like Micro Focus or Zabbix. You have to create your request to collect the data and add crucial components to the software."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "We have found the pricing very cost-effective. The licensing is CPU and data source-based."
  • "Cost could be improved."
  • "Licensing is a one time cost. But maintenance costs depend on what you want, how long you need it. Maintenance is a kind of insurance. With health insurance, you don't know whether you will get sick or need to go to hospital or not but you have to have insurance. It's the same thing with support. If you have that expertise in resolving issues, if you have enough experience in your IT department, I would say you don't need the support. But in practice, they recommend you go with the support. If you want support you have to pay for it."
  • "Price-wise, it's more expensive than SSIS, but it's a better tool, so it has more features. Licensing is on a yearly basis."
  • "Its maintenance is expensive."
  • "It's much more expensive, almost three times more expensive than most other solutions."
  • "We are satisfied with the pricing."
  • "I consider this to be an expensive product."
  • More Informatica PowerCenter Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "The solution is expensive, so I rate its pricing a four out of ten."
  • "I rate the product's pricing a ten on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive. It is a very pricey tool."
  • "The solution’s pricing is moderate."
  • "Splunk Enterprise Platform is an expensive solution."
  • "There are yearly payments to be made towards the licensing costs attached to the solution."
  • "On a scale from one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive, I rate the solution's pricing around seven or eight out of ten."
  • "If you exceed your licensed limit, the product will issue a warning, typically a five-license warning. Additionally, they send daily email notifications informing you about the breach. This prompts you to consider options such as minimizing logs or acquiring additional licensing to address the issue."
  • "The product is expensive, and the cost depends on the amount of data ingestion."

Technology has made it easier for businesses to organize and manipulate data to get a clearer picture of what’s going on with their business. Notably, ETL tools have made managing huge amounts of data significantly easier and faster, boosting many organizations’ business intelligence operations There are many third-party vendors offering ETL solutions, but two of the most popular are PowerCenter Informatica and Microsoft SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services). Each technology has its advantages but there are also similarities on how they carry out the extract-transform-load processes and only differ in terminologies. If you’re in the process of choosing ETL tools and PowerCenter Informatica and Microsoft SSIS made it to your shortlist, here is a short comparative discussion detailing the differences between the two, as well as their benefits. Package Configuration Most enterprise data integration projects would require the capacity to develop a solution in one platform and test and deploy it in a separate environment without having to manually change the established workflow. In order to achieve this seamless movement between two environments, your ETL technology should allow the dynamic update of the project’s properties using the content or a parameter file or configuration. Both Informatica and SSIS support this functionality using different methodologies. In Informatica, every session can have more than one source and one or more destination connections. There are… Read more →
