Cloud data catalog has streamlined lineage and quality while leaving more automation to improve
I have not explored IDMC's automation capabilities driven by AI and metadata too much at the moment, but it is on the cards. We are basically creating the foundation, as the whole migration has taken place recently and it is still early days. I think Informatica Intelligent Data Management Cloud (IDMC) is evolving, and as the vendors move forward, they pick up new concepts from each other. I have seen that products leapfrog each other, and from my experience over the years, the big players tend to copy features or add enhancements based on industry trends. I feel whatever the tool does not have now, there is a feedback loop allowing us to request new features, and we continually ask for different ways to do things as we have a pipeline into the product management team. It is difficult to say what additional features I would prefer to see in the next release of IDMC. I would appreciate more automation on the lineage front, with more AI to seamlessly join independent sources and create seamless lineage between different technologies, such as from file into database A into a different database and landing up in a reporting system such as Cognos, Qlik, Qlik Sense, QlikView, or Power BI.

Different types of products can have different attributes in the master product record, but there seem to be deployment issues that require a reliable SI.
The powerful attribution management capability, which allows different types of products to have different attributes in the master product record We implement it for other customers, but don't run it ourselves. It has essentially been "frozen" by Oracle - they don't seem to be updating it any…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Ease of use, configurability, maintainability, and good aesthetics make for a more fluid functional process."
"Informatica Cloud Data Integration has a strong enterprise customer base and this is one of the main reasons why we choose to work with them."
"Informatica MDM helped us realize our goal of maintaining a distinct (golden) record in our database for better decision making and reporting purposes."
"It has improved the customer data management where we had the incorrect addresses and data cleansing, also in finding the duplicates so as to ensure the customer data is not duplicated."
"This tool actually, for the first time, when you talk to data governance teams, gives a holistic view of what a data governance team can do with this tool."
"What took 10 hours to do in the on-prem version, takes less than an hour in the cloud."
"Address Doctor gives an accurate combination of information provided with a level of returned threshold value."
"The Mapping Designer allows for declarative ETL development (visual scripting) that leverages a wide array of different transformations."
"It is a solid, reliable product with a robust development history and good support behind them."
"We found, most valuable, the ability to view all the information about all of our Items (previously in 8 different systems) in one screen."

Cons

"Informatica Enterprise Data Catalog is hard to set up, so this is an area for improvement, e.g. it would be good if they make it easier to set up, because the project was made 80% of the time of the setup."
"If I want to scan the metadata from the data lineage or the Python code, such areas can get tedious in the tool."
"Once the data is masked, we won't be able to reverse it back to its original value."
"One thing Informatica could improve is the way IPUs are used."
"Informatica MDM could improve the interdependency with integration. The solution sometimes becomes a bit difficult to change considering a lot of interdependency with the integration. There can be some improvement in the workflows and they can introduce more artificial intelligence."
"With the solution, we had some issues, and we have every day, and we used to open a ticket. Sometimes, there are data issues and transformation issues."
"The cost of Informatica MDM is expensive and has room for improvement."
"A general improvement in icons and the virtual interface would be good."
"It has essentially been "frozen" by Oracle - they don't seem to be updating it any further."
"Some of our users are very picky. This is common, but almost none like the out-of-box report writing, specifically the Ad-hoc reports."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Pricing is determined by the number of licensed users as well as the number of Core CPUs."
"It's a costly solution"
"Informatica Axon is a costly solution. I rate Informatica Axon a four out of ten for its pricing."
"The licensing costs attached to the solution are pretty high, but then, with the cloud model, the prices depend on what it provides for the value of money, which I feel was very high."
"It's an expensive solution."
"We are quite happy with the licensing model."
"The price is neither too high nor too low."
"Informatica is very expensive."
