We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"I like Turbonomic's built-in reporting. It provides a ton of information out of the box, so I don't have to build panels for the monthly summaries and other reports I need to present to management. We get better performance and bottleneck reporting from this than we do from our older EMC software.""We've saved hundreds of hours. Most of the time those hours would have to be after hours as well, which are more valuable to me as that's my personal time.""The notifications saying, "This is a corrective action," even though some of them can be automated, are always welcome to see. They summarize your entire infrastructure and how you can better utilize it. That is the biggest feature.""The solution has a good optimization feature.""I like the analytics that help us optimize compatibility. Whereas Azure Advisor tells us what we have to do, Turbonomic has automation which actually does those things. That means we don't have to be present to get them done and simplifies our IT engineers' jobs.""Using this product helps us to reduce performance risk because it shows us where resources are needed but not yet allocated.""Before implementing Turbonomic, we had difficulty reaching a consensus about VM placement and sizing. Everybody's opinion was wrong, including mine. The application developers, implementers, and infrastructure team could never decide the appropriate size of a virtual machine. I always made the machines small, and they always made them too big. We were both probably wrong.""The tool provides the ability to look at the consumption utilization over a period of time and determine if we need to change that resource allocation based on the actual workload consumption, as opposed to how IT has configured it. Therefore, we have come to realize that a lot of our workloads are overprovisioned, and we are spending more money in the public cloud than we need to."

"What I found most valuable in vCloud Director is the multi-tenancy.""The solution is reliable and performs well.""vCloud Director is a scalable solution, and we have 10 customers who use it.""We use the solution to connect clouds to different clouds.""The product allows us to add or remove features.""The most valuable feature of vCloud Director is the scaling architecture that they have built.""The deployment is easy.""The tool is very stable."

Cons
"Before IBM bought it, the support was fantastic. After IBM bought it, the support became very disappointing.""They have a long road map when we ask for certain things that will make the product better. It takes time, but that's understandable because there are other things that are higher on the priority list.""The reporting needs to be improved. It's important for us to know and be able to look back on what happened and why certain decisions were made, and we want to use a custom report for this.""I do not like Turbonomic's new licensing model. The previous model was pretty straightforward, whereas the new model incorporates what most of the vendors are doing now with cores and utilization. Our pricing under the new model will go up quite a bit. Before, it was pretty straightforward, easy to understand, and reasonable.""There is an opportunity for improvement with some of Turbonomic's permissions internally for role-based access control. We would like the ability to come up with some customized permissions or scope permissions a bit differently than the product provides.""Recovering resources when they're not needed is not as optimized as it could be.""We're still evaluating the solution, so I don't know enough about what I don't know. They've done a lot over the years. I used Turbonomics six or seven years ago before IBM bought them. They've matured a lot since then.""The automation area could be improved, and the generic reports are poor. We want more details in the analysis report from the application layer. The reports from the infrastructure layer are satisfactory, but Turbonomic won't provide much information if we dig down further than the application layer."

More IBM Turbonomic Cons →

"It would be nice to see some new features in respect of the GUI.""The solution requires a lot of hardware and resources for cloud deployment than other competitors. Additionally, the performance could improve.""It would be great if Microsoft and VMware come together and become a common tool.""There are too many errors, it could be more stable.""We use vCloud Director along with Terraform, and it's difficult to make them work together. It takes a long time to deploy virtual machines with Terraform in vCloud Director. For example, it can take about one or two hours to create 10 machines. It takes up a lot of our DevOps' and engineers' time in comparison to that with other solutions. This is an area that they should work on and improve.""vCloud Director should improve by having support with other cloud providers, such as Microsoft Azure and Google cloud.""The initial setup is not straightforward; it can be complicated. The deployment can take one to two weeks.""The tool needs to add more features to improve the console."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The pricing is in line with the other solutions that we have. It's not a bargain software, nor is it overly expensive."
  • "I don't know the current prices, but I like how the licensing is based on the number of instances instead of sockets, clusters, or cores. We have some VMs that are so heavy I can only fit four on one server. It's not cost-effective if we have to pay more for those. When I move around a VM SQL box with 30 cores and a half-terabyte of RAM, I'm not paying for an entire socket and cores where people assume you have at least 10 or 20 VMs on that socket for that pricing."
  • "In the last year, Turbonomic has reduced our cloud costs by $94,000."
  • "I consider the pricing to be high."
  • "Everybody tells me the pricing is high. But the ROIs are great."
  • More IBM Turbonomic Pricing and Cost Advice →

  • "We pay monthly for all of the licenses."
  • "vCloud Director is an expensive solution."
  • "vCloud Director is priced higher than other solutions, such as Nutanix."
  • "The licensing costs are pretty high, but it might depend on the size of the company."
  • "I recommend using the Enterprise or Enterprise Plus licenses because they unlock all of the solution's capabilities."
  • "The licensing cost is high for vCloud Director. It is mostly a perpetual license."
  • "The solution is expensive so pricing is rated a four out of ten."
  • "The price of the solution is expensive."
