High availability servers have boosted hosted payment services but still need better local support
We are not using PowerVM because of certain limitations; it is on a back-end engine. However, we are using other components such as vSphere for some small interfaces, and those are the main components we are utilizing. Since these servers are fully dedicated to various high-end solutions, they have some embedded features that their kernel and applications are using, which are bound to that functionality. We may not provide an exact assessment on its usage, but we are considering those products for some AI solutions; however, we are currently in the review stage and have not concluded our evaluation on how those are utilized yet. We are aware of the pricing of HPE ProLiant DL servers, but not off the cuff. We have obviously acquired those solutions ex-Pakistan, so they are on the rise, and while we do not remember those prices offhand, they are generally better than the IBM series, although they are becoming slightly pricey in Pakistan due to processor shortages and demand. Improvements could be made in database engine hosting services because, as it stands, the pricing of Oracle is too high from both the service and software solution perspectives. If pricing can be reduced, especially for DB servers, that could have a direct positive impact on the overall solution. Regarding reliability, it has been satisfactory so far, but since the distributors are not physically present in Pakistan, that creates a risk for long-term large customers. They provide import-based services, necessitating us to over-invest in backup stock and offline servers. If there was a market presence from those players in Pakistan, it could benefit both clients and distributors by reducing the need for investment in backup inventory.

A budget-friendly tool that offers good stability
I don't have much to comment on what requires improvement in the product because my company is more engaged with Dell's servers than Lenovo's ones. I'm not that much familiar with Lenovo. My company has seen that the servers from Lenovo offer good performance and high scalability, so I don't see any scope for improvement in the solution. With Lenovo, when it comes to its HCI-related part, which includes ThinkAgile, users may face issues as VMware licenses are not linked with ThinkAgile. With ThinkAgile in the picture, there are two different vendors, Lenovo and VMware. Suppose VMware and Lenovo come together, then they produce a common product. In the case of the servers under Lenovo, the virtualization software is again both from VMware and Dell, and the licenses are deployed on the server. Different vendors manage the servers from Lenovo that fall under ThinkAgile and VMware, so if there is a way that allows Lenovo and VMware to produce a system together like ThinKAgile, then it would be a good improvement.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We use this solution for everything; we use it for payment solutions and for the switch."
"The setup was easy and not complicated."
"HPE servers are better than Dell and Wipro servers."
"HPE ProLiant DL Servers are a great product. We don't have many complaints."
"It is stable."
"Some of our customers are using it for five years, six years without the need to even replace a single part or use the service from HPE."
"The stability has been very good, and it is very reliable."
"When they get delivered to you, there are no failures and they’ve already been tested and ready to go."
"I like Lenovo's XClarity Controller, and the ability to control and deploy Edge Servers through this XClarity interface."
"It is a stable solution. The product doesn't have any problems when it comes to stability."
"Lenovo Edge Servers are scalable; the servers are dense, and you can add CPUs to increase the capacity, serving many roles like large database servers, virtualized servers, and virtual desktops with CPUs, giving you a huge choice of servers you can deploy with Lenovo."

Cons

"I would like to see an on-demand model."
"Not all of the hardware is completely up-to-date."
"What is missing for me is more of the administration site."
"We have had issues with ProLiant's intelligent provisioning. Sometimes, the drivers do not come up, so we have to install them manually."
"The new function, which is coming at the moment, with the online firmware updates - that's one of the problems we're struggling with, with our customers, to have downtime - these live online updates are really, really a benefit we're waiting for."
"I would like it if there's a possibility, even if you have to pay an additional license, to enable that technology on the DL360s."
"I would say that it would be nice if there was a more streamlined approach to getting drivers or looking up system information from HPE's website."
"For companies like us, we want more than a server. When we buy servers then we want some level of software orchestration on top of it to help us deploy OS or hypervisor plus some form of high-level capacity/environment review."
"With Lenovo, when it comes to its HCI-related part, which includes ThinkAgile, users may face issues as VMware licenses are not linked with ThinkAgile."
"Airflow in the servers can be a problem. Sometimes we cannot add CPU to Edge Servers because there's not enough airflow in the appliance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I rate the product price an eight on a scale of one to ten, where one is low price and ten is high price."
"It is not expensive. Its price is similar to other solutions."
"The price is a little too high; it could be reduced."
"HPE ProLiant DL Servers are one of the best-selling solutions in this industry. There is not a license required for this solution."
"This is an expensive product and there is licensing required for iLO, which is the HPE monitoring system."
"An investment in DL380 is worth it."
"This was a one-time purchase for us because it's hardware that we purchased from HPE. There aren't any licensing costs."
"The price of HPE ProLiant DL Servers is reasonable compared to other solutions."
"The solution is available to users at a low price."
