Supports flexible hosting needs through seamless upgradability and strong monitoring capabilities
The most valuable features of Dell PowerEdge R-Series for me are the feature richness and the upgradability. I really love the way that it is so dynamically applicable for every situation, and they manage to have an all-in-one solution for every single situation. Dell PowerEdge has supported the growth and operational success of my company through its great compute power and price-to-performance ratio. Every time Dell is at the top of its game for us, and there is just no other brand for us that is able to reach that kind of price-to-performance ratio. Dell PowerEdge R-Series has features that specifically cater to the needs of my small company, such as iDRAC. The iDRAC system is a complete feature set for managing servers and hardware technically and monitoring-wise. It really fits in our system and our ecosystem, and monitoring-wise, it is excellent. They have all these sensors available via different protocols and end points, which I love, and the ability to manage and control everything via the iDRAC interface is just a welcome bonus. In our use case, Dell PowerEdge R-Series is very flexible. It is another computer which helps a lot because of the durability over time. They keep running, making scalability for getting more of those resources in our environment so easy.

A budget-friendly tool that offers good stability
I don't have much to comment on what requires improvement in the product because my company is more engaged with Dell's servers than Lenovo's ones. I'm not that much familiar with Lenovo. My company has seen that the servers from Lenovo offer good performance and high scalability, so I don't see any scope for improvement in the solution. With Lenovo, when it comes to its HCI-related part, which includes ThinkAgile, users may face issues as VMware licenses are not linked with ThinkAgile. With ThinkAgile in the picture, there are two different vendors, Lenovo and VMware. Suppose VMware and Lenovo come together, then they produce a common product. In the case of the servers under Lenovo, the virtualization software is again both from VMware and Dell, and the licenses are deployed on the server. Different vendors manage the servers from Lenovo that fall under ThinkAgile and VMware, so if there is a way that allows Lenovo and VMware to produce a system together like ThinKAgile, then it would be a good improvement.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers support our growth and operational success as they are the backbone of our organization; they run our production site entirely, so we rely on Dell's equipment 100%."
"The management portal is essential because it gives you a lot of flexibility. You don't have to be at the location to manage the server. You can power it on and off remotely or start an installation remotely. All you need to do is connect it to the network and you can do things from thousands of miles away."
"The speed of delivery is something super valuable. Reliability and performance are also valuable."
"The scalability of Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers is excellent."
"The iDRAC interface of Dell PowerEdge R-Series is very convenient and easy to use."
"Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers can help with that because it is the platform our whole business runs on - it's the foundation."
"The product serves as a good foundation because reliable, stable products are essential based on maintenance requirements and other factors, and this reliability is definitely one of the key pillars for choosing Dell."
"My advice for anybody who is considering this solution is that it's the support from Dell that really makes things easier for us."
"I like Lenovo's XClarity Controller, and the ability to control and deploy Edge Servers through this XClarity interface."
"Lenovo Edge Servers are scalable; the servers are dense, and you can add CPUs to increase the capacity, serving many roles like large database servers, virtualized servers, and virtual desktops with CPUs, giving you a huge choice of servers you can deploy with Lenovo."
"It is a stable solution. The product doesn't have any problems when it comes to stability."

Cons

"I'd like to take the complexities out of all the different tools that surround it, like OpenManage."
"The Dell EMC PowerEdge Rack Server did not scale to our expectations."
"When interacting with customer support, it defaults to Arabic because of our region. However, most of the experts here are not familiar with Arabic. We would like English as an alternative language for easy interaction."
"I'd appreciate seeing more options in terms of expandability for certain Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers models. The expandability issues I've experienced are mainly with the 700 series of the R series chassis, primarily around what can fit in for PCI expansion cards."
"I would increase the life cycle management and those life cycle management tools."
"My experience with pricing, cost, setup, and licensing reveals that I think costing was somewhat higher than expected, but we did see reliability and partnership as the primary reasons for moving forward."
"I don't know much about the new Intel CPUs, but they need to put more than two CPUs in the servers. It may be an Intel limitation, but I'm not sure."
"Its scalability is good up to certain limits, but if more computing is required as per the business plan, we will need to switch to another model."
"With Lenovo, when it comes to its HCI-related part, which includes ThinkAgile, users may face issues as VMware licenses are not linked with ThinkAgile."
"Airflow in the servers can be a problem. Sometimes we cannot add CPU to Edge Servers because there's not enough airflow in the appliance."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I have no issues with the pricing and licensing costs. They are fine."
"The product is cheaper than HP servers, but the price could always be better."
"I know the pricing for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers went up last year, and we weren't too happy about that, but it is what it is."
"The pricing for Dell PowerEdge Rack Servers is on par with everything else at the moment."
"The product's pricing is not good."
"They are affordable. Even during our recent procurement, the cost of Dell servers was lower than that of HPE."
"The pricing and licensing are fair."
"The pricing could always be better."
"The solution is available to users at a low price."
