Lacks multi-platform support and physical infrastructure but excels in storage optimization
We use it for VM backup and Office 365 backup I find the solution to be user-friendly and easy to manage and deploy. It provides storage for Office 365, which is beneficial, and the deduplication technology is excellent, especially in optimizing storage capacity compared to others. In terms of…

Good automation and worth the money with helpful disaster recovery
The initial setup requires a design and engineering phase. You can't just pick the product and click next, next, finish - especially if you're planning on making sure that it's going to be available during a disaster. It does require sitting down and designing it. So it's not like a home-use product that you can just go and install and start using it with no consequence.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"We frequently use the granular restore option for when our users accidentally delete files or to recover emails from mailboxes. We have found that to be a must-have feature and it comes with the solution at no extra cost."
"The interface is user-friendly and even if our tech isn't onsite, we can work with the owners to confirm that the data will be restored with no issues."
"There is a free version for Hosts with 2 VMs."
"The initial setup was simple and easy. Anyone without prior experience can install, configure, and use it."
"VM backup and the item level recovery are the most valuable features."
"The ability to test the backups without having to manually mount the VHDs after restore allows us to check the integrity of the backups."
"Altaro Hyper-v backup is not pricey and provides great features to secure your production data on Microsoft Hyper-V clusters."
"The CDP backup feature is very nice, as it allows you to take backups at high frequencies and with application consistency."
"The feature that automates most of the tasks is the most valuable since you do not have to worry about making sure that you follow the steps one by one manually during a disaster."
"Our impression of the solution for providing a clean, malware-free recovery and protecting our AD backups from compromise is that it is probably one of the best options available."
"I like the zero-touch or zero-intervention aspect the most when it comes to performing a forest restoration (FOHO). It is really automated. If you set everything correctly, it will restore your forest without any manual steps."

Cons

"The recovery speed could be quicker, especially when you only need a file or two."
"Missing features at the moment are Linux file-level restore, backup from physical machines, German localized version, and probably full tape support (RDX is supported but there is no "real tape" support)."
"Sometime there are stability issues with older kit, for example, it can take a long time to compress the primary backup."
"The scalability of the solution is limited."
"The yearly maintenance fee can be improved. It is high."
"The software does have occasional problems with shadow copy but restarting the services rectifies this."
"If you look into the performance of a virtual machine and you look to the performance of the physical machine, the correlation between these is totally unclear."
"Stability."
"One of the things they can do is give the user the ability to skip the prechecks and verifications."
"I identified a gap with their Recovery Manager for AD Forest Edition. That software can't recover for us if we have a complete malware/ransomware-type scenario where we lose all our domain controllers. If you lose the entire forest, you can't get it back up with the Forest Edition. You have to use their Disaster Recovery Edition."
"Inside the console, when you change something in the computer collection, there's no history or log showing what's been done. For example, if I add or remove a domain controller from the compare collection, the console doesn't record the time or the user who made the change. This makes it difficult to manage the console, especially for auditing purposes. It lacks login capability within Recovery Manager for Active Directory."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Altaro VM Backup is affordably priced. It is a best value for its price and has almost every feature that an expensive, popular product offers."
"Its yearly maintenance fee is fairly high for me to renew for upgrades and support."
"The pricing is okay,"
"VMware is a little pricey, but it is a good solution and priced similar to other products."
"By implementing the solution at multiple locations, significant cost savings were achieved."
"No other product offers these features for this price. The ROI is great."
"Altaro had the best prices and ROI in the whole bunch that we evaluated."
"There is a free version for two VMs. I would advise to study the deployment environment well, prior to committing to order a license per host."
"Comparing it to other vendors, it seems to be affordable. So, it is worth the money."
