We performed a comparison between Dell PowerStore and Huawei OceanStor Dorado based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two All-Flash Storage solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."The amount of throughput that we're getting is really nice."
"It's reduced our overhead management time on storage, since it is so simple to get in and just provision a volume, present it to the host, and then you are done."
"The console is simple to use. It has good performance. It is easy to install, understand, and manage, with a good ratio of deduplication and compression. It is doing its job."
"The speed of the Pure FlashArray is very, very fast and nothing in the market can compare to it."
"The ease of management is one of the most valuable features of this solution. I would have also said that it's pretty fast but now our SQL servers are starting to beat it up pretty bad."
"It has been very stable. I have not seen or heard of downtime storage issues after moving over to it."
"Performance is the most valuable feature."
"It worked flawlessly."
"The supportability of SCME drives for faster data access from the PowerStore and is the most valuable feature."
"When compared to Pure Storage, Dell PowerStore's cost was quite attractive."
"Reliable, with comprehensive features and a well-established support base."
"The product's initial setup phase was very easy."
"The support is very good."
"The PowerStore's compression ratio is even higher than the Unity system."
"The solution is stable."
"I find all of the Dell PowerStore features to be valuable."
"It is a scalable solution."
"The most valuable features of the solution are SmartMigration, HyperReplication, HyperSnap, HyperCopy, HyperClone, SmartPartition, and SmartCache."
"The initial setup is straightforward. Deployment takes about a day."
"The initial setup is very straightforward."
"Two things really stand out for me. First, there's group cloning, which is very nice. It simplifies managing multiple clones across the group. Second, Huawei's multi-controller architecture with load balancing is a good part."
"The deduplication features and the graphical user interface (GUI) of the solution are the most valuable to me."
"The solution is scalable."
"The platform’s most valuable features are speed, accuracy, and encryption."
"In the next release, I would like to see file-level encryption."
"I can't see where they can make anything better, unless, of course, they lower their prices even more."
"They could improve the price."
"I like what they're doing, but some of my customers complain that they do not have all the bells and whistles and knobs to fine-tune workloads that some of the competitors have. In my opinion, that's good. All customers don't have dedicated storage gurus, and they can get themselves into trouble if they fine-tune too many of those high-performance knobs, but they do get knocked down. Pure Storage takes a hit in the minds and opinions of some of the customers because they cannot customize things as much as compared to a legacy storage provider's appliance such as NetApp, Dell EMC, or even HPE. I personally think 95% of my customers are better off letting the system fine-tune itself. That was something that you needed to do 12 or 15 years ago, but now with all-flash, the technology can handle what it needs to handle. Customers just end up shooting themselves in the foot if they are tweaking too many default settings."
"The connectivity needs improvement. You do not have the possibility to have a file and block connectivity at the same time on the same machine. It has limited ability to do so."
"The way Pure Storage does the controller storage warranty or replacement has been an issue for some people who just replace the controllers every couple of years, and that's where some of the confusion with pricing and support has come in. They should be clear on the way the controller replacements happen, as it is important to know whether or not you can get a good return on them, because it can be a little confusing."
"The GUI is simplistic and basic. I feel like it's explanatory, but not enough, it needs a little more to it."
"I would love to see a true one click upgrade solution. Right now, you have to click and schedule an appointment with Pure Storage to be able to upgrade. I would love for it to automatically download, install, and fall-over every controller as it updates."
"Reporting is an area that could be improved. It's very simplistic sometimes, and some of the very technical guys on my team want to see more of the details and be able to massage the report a little bit better."
"The NAS part is very poor. It's very basic. Even Dell EMC has said that to us. We are waiting for version 3 of PowerStore for that. This must be improved and it is in the roadmap."
"The pricing could be lower. It is very expensive."
"I do not like having to use VPLEX for synchronous replication, as opposed to having the store software built-in."
"Dell PowerStore is a good solution overall, but some models could support hypervisors better by allowing for more customization and flexibility for customer needs."
"When it comes to Dell PowerStore, I would like to see more integration and more security features included. It's unfortunate that the solution does not feature Flash trace."
"The only area I can highlight for improvement is that the 4:1 data reduction target has not been reached. This may be due to an issue with Dell EMC's initial analysis of data compression. As a result, we have had to add new physical disks to reach our goal of total available disk space."
"I would like to see a Snapshot feature. Currently, it is unable to occupy the capacity."
"The speeds of the disks themselves need to be faster. The disks are not flash. When we opened our hard drive from the inclusion, I saw a converter, and it's not entirely flash."
"I would really like to see Heterogeneous Storage Virtualization in a future release."
"The initial setup was very complex."
"They should add a feature to the platform to help us manage storage communication with one of the vendors."
"In additional features, it would be easier to do snapshots on a regular basis. So, like, a new feature that would allow you to take snapshots every hour."
"The solution's price could be better."
"Huawei OceanStor Dorado could improve the integration, there have been some compatibility issues with some operating system functions."
"There are some limitations to this product because they do not have unified storage."
