We performed a comparison between Dell PowerEdge VRTX and Oracle SuperCluster based on real PeerSpot user reviews.
Find out in this report how the two Converged Infrastructure solutions compare in terms of features, pricing, service and support, easy of deployment, and ROI."From a hardware perspective, it's interesting. The selling point of VRTX is that everything is built-in. For a small company that doesn't have a server room or the capabilities of hosting several servers, VRTX has four blades. The equivalent in regular server models would be four servers, which is a minimum of 4U, but it could easily be 8U, and then it would have storage. The storage is included inside the enclosure, and it would require a storage unit. It would also require connectivity, which would be ethernet or another protocol switch. From a software perspective, it's a little bit more integrated. You have an integrated way of managing the whole thing, including storage and networking. It has an internal network that can also be useful. I know for a fact that Dell is almost fazing out the product, and it is not that available anymore because it will just cannibalize their sales. They want to sell the more expensive stuff."
"We started off with a base because we started our infrastructure with Dell and we always propose or prefer Dell which is easier to manage the warranty than with different vendors."
"It is pretty easy to install."
"The most valuable feature is the combined management in one box."
"It is simple to use and it's user-friendly."
"We were satisfied after we upgraded to a professional next-day on-site support."
"Dell PowerEdge VRTX supports a lot of memory which has allowed us to keep our system size smaller."
"We now find that the solution is quite stable."
"Scalability and technical support."
"In this setup, the traffic is distributed among the nodes, enhancing the overall performance compared to a scenario where all traffic is directed to a single server."
"Our primary use case is for E-Business Suite applications the applications for the government, and most of the applications that use an HCM."
"The two features that I find to be the most valuable are high availability and high performance."
"Because SuperCluster is a specially engineered system, we have confidence in that all the components are compatible with one another. Everything runs together as a well-coupled group of machines, and the performance is great (especially the memory)."
"The performance is significantly improved, and the administration is easy because it is a single platform end-to-end."
"A valuable feature is the Exadata Storage appliance, optimized for database queries."
"Because it's classified as an engineered system, it's all integrated, it's all supported by one vendor. We don't have to go to multiple vendors for support, it's all integrated under Oracle."
"Dell PowerEdge VRTX can improve by providing support for M2 drives."
"The storage can be improved."
"The licensing can be difficult to understand."
"The support must be improved."
"I'd like to be able to increase capacity."
"VRTX is a bit simplified to the extent that it is a mainstream type of solution for small businesses. If a company needs a more complex solution or something that is a time saver or has more power or scalability, it is probably not the best solution. However, when a company grows and its needs grow, this type of environment can be definitely migrated towards a lab environment or pre-prod testing, not necessarily production. It can still have a second life for the other types of use."
"We've had general issues related to the solution being difficult."
"The scalability is limited with one chassis and the amount of storage it will give you, but it is mainly used for small offices."
"They may have made some improvements but based on the version that I am using, it is a little complicated because it is based on the Unix Operating system."
"If it had capabilities to integrate really well with DB2 or SQL Server or Hitachi SANs, those sort of things, that would be a real benefit. Right now, it's fully supported only under all Oracle infrastructure."
"A major issue for us is that after the most recent update of SuperCluster, they have now stopped all future production of new versions. That is to say, after M7 there was M8, and now there are no future versions planned (e.g. M9) in the market."
"Not a very user friendly solution."
"There are many areas for improvement. For example, better guidance in terms of troubleshooting issues relating to ZFS, as well as better tools/diagnostics for monitoring that specific component, to better identify potential issues. Hardware monitoring via OEM 13.2 is not 100 percent, as Ops Center is still required in some instances."
"Speaking from a business perspective, our main problem is that our particular edition of SuperCluster is now at end-of-life status, making it obsolete and impossible to get support for. This presents a challenge for us, as finding a path to our next solution is not easy."
"It's not working as we expected. We thought it would be fast and reliable but we are not getting the reliability. It's not stable."
"I would like to see control domain and zone management via a management console, similar to that of OVM."
