Hybrid backup strategy has improved recovery orchestration and now supports flexible DR planning
I think improvements could be made in Commvault Cloud. Lately what I have seen is that there are AI capabilities that different data protection organizations are coming up with, which basically revolves around tiering of not frequently accessible data to glacier kind of storage, plus bringing in a high level of compression and deduplication capabilities. All those features I believe are there in other customers and they are bringing in new use cases from the AI perspective which I have not recently seen in Commvault. I have seen that Dell does have such features. We recently pitched a solution to the customers where we talked about data tiering and the other AI use cases, identifying the data by itself and autonomously taking decisions on how to tier the data between the different storage classes that we have. Those kind of capabilities that we have proposed to the customer as far as the partner solutions are concerned. I would like to see AI capabilities in Commvault Cloud. The rest of the features pretty much align with the other enterprise solutions that we have in the market. It is just the AI capability that is being asked by the customers as well as that I see missing with Commvault.

Easy to scale, reliable, reasonably price, extremely simple to use, and manage
We are a reseller and primarily use Datto ALTO for disaster recovery It is extremely simple to use, set up, and manage. They do a good job of it.  The interface is very easy. It stayed the same for a long time, which makes it easy to set up and easy to work with. Technical support was superior…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The solution provides us with a single platform to move, manage, and recover data across on-premises, hybrid, and cloud locations, making it very effective."
"Global deduplication and the indexing of the data object are the most valuable features. It saves costs on the product side by doing compression and deduplication. It will help you and make your life easy to reach the data that you need within the minimum downtime when it's required."
"Real-time synchronization is a good feature."
"The diversity on offer is very, very good. Everything is supported. It's great."
"I can leverage on cloud storage technologies as well and restore it with granularity level that I have not seen in any other data management tool."
"Every server is online and the backup is also online, so we reduce the downtime and administrative overhead."
"The ability to manage everything from a single pane of glass is another major advantage."
"They have some really good features, they have really good engineering, and they have very good support."
"It stayed the same for a long time, which makes it easy to set up and easy to work with."
"Previously, we used AppAssure; we switched to Datto ALTO because it was a better product, at the same price point."

Cons

"The workflow has room for improvement."
"What I need is deeper CLI documentation for both QCommand and SQL queries."
"The product does not provide an option to save a copy of data on-premises."
"They reply to the support portal weekly, but there are some delays."
"Command Center definitely gives us a complete view of our data. But finding some of the granular, very small items that we sometimes have to find, such as auxiliary copies for tapes, I still find that it's easier to navigate and, sometimes, only possible to find them using the CommCell tool."
"Some of our customers say that Commvault is a very expensive solution, but Commvault has many features that the competitors don't have."
"Suppose I am restoring a particular file. If I want to restore the permissions only from that particular folder, that is not possible. I have to restore all the data for that particular folder. If there was an option to just restore the permissions, that would be better."
"Licensing could be better explained."
"Technical support was superior when it was owned independently."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"The price is not cheap, but when you compare it to the other products they are all almost the same level in terms of price."
"Compared with other backup technologies, Commvault is a bit more costly, but we are satisfied with the support, the services, and the features that we get with Commvault."
"Originally, it was really attractive when we were deployed on-prem. They have since built and moved it to the cloud, which I am a big fan of. I have all my security tools in the cloud, but it came with a significant increase in pricing. We ended up negotiating a better price because we have been a long-term customer, and I have also spoken on their behalf quite a few times, but if I have to buy it at its current rate, I am not sure if I would be a customer. It is expensive."
"The price could always be lower."
"We work with Commvault and a partner on our environment needs according to capacity, licensing, pricing, components, modules, etc. Additional costs depend on your backup needs."
"The license for Commvault HyperScale X is paid annually."
"Using a subscription-based license has been advantageous."
"The license is paid on an annual basis and the price is reasonable."
"If you have a small server, it's approximately $100 per month."
