We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"The most valuable feature of the solution is the one I use for report generation. The security risk is very low.""It's pretty useful when we need to migrate something big from a different type of database that AWS Data Migration Services supports.""The tools are very user-friendly.""For our simple requirement of migration, DMS is just a typical AWS RDS with an IPSec tunnel to Oracle. The most valuable features for us are the networking capabilities like VPCs and VPNs.""Scalable and stable solution for migrating databases to AWS, with valuable features such as parallel full load and continuous data replication.""The process is now simplified because there won't be maintenance. Usually we can take a snapshot of the number I need. We can automate the backup snapshots and we can restore it very quickly. We get many benefits from the application.""We particularly like that this solution has the facility to integrate with all ETL tools.""This solution is very good at mini-batch processing."

"It runs like an appliance and has tremendous throughput.""We only use small parts of the solution, however, the parts that we use are quite adequate.""The Cloud Console for monitoring and troubleshooting data operations.""The fluid user interface (probably the most user friendly interface, when compared to its competitors).""Jitterbit handles the most lines of data in a .csv and loads the quickest of any data loader I have tried.""Jitterbit provides the ability to quickly map data between files and databases.""It is a scalable solution.""Integrity, ease of use, user-friendly user interface, and errorless logs are the most valuable features."

More Jitterbit Harmony Pros →

"It can scale to a great extent. It can handle the load that we are putting on it, which is about 5TBs.""It takes less than five minutes to set up and delivers results. It is much quicker than traditional ETL technologies.""The most valuable feature of Matillion ETL is the ETL. The solution is open-source which provides advantages, such as good performance and high efficiency. Additionally, it supports three data types which eliminates predefining the data, and we can write script models in Python.""The new version with the Productivity Cloud is very simple. It's easy to use, navigate, and understand.""It's highly scalable. It takes upon itself the Redshift scalability, so it's very good.""It's been able to do everything we require.""The loading of data is the most valuable feature of Matillion ETL.""The product's initial setup phase was easy."

Cons
"There are a set of complexities and challenges when a user wants to integrate AWS products with Microsoft products.""This solution can offer more tweaks where the latency can be brought down to fifteen seconds.""The performance of data migration could be smoother.""AWS Database Migration Service can become complex when testing. Other solutions, such as Microsoft Azure makes it easy to do. There are more steps to complete tasks in AWS Database Migration Service than in Microsoft Azure.""The way that the task settings work, specifically for logging, is really poor.""This solution is compatible with only AWS.""Migrating from here and pushing the data from on-premise to AWS cloud is a big challenge and a few more services from AWS would be helpful. For example, we are currently using ILDB internet tools which move data from on-premise to the AWS cloud. A few more services would be really helpful for me to move the master data.""Whatever solution worked today can not be reused in the next migration."

More AWS Database Migration Service Cons →

"Looping through complex data structures can be difficult.""There were some bugs in the product. For example if you run a delete query and test, it deletes the actual data.""In the past few months, there have been some server downtimes during work hours that have affected some critical scheduled integrations.""I would like the ability to offer a dedicated cloud version for security.""The initial setup can be a little bit difficult.""You need to have some development skills or hire a Jitterbit engineer to make changes.""I know with Salesforce updating the UI like they did, it slowed it down a lot.""Sometimes we experience disconnections and I have to close all Jitterbit programs."

More Jitterbit Harmony Cons →

"In the next release, we would like to have connections to more databases.""The product must enhance its near-real-time data capture feature.""Ideally, I would like it to integrate with Secrets Manager as well as the AWS.""I found some of the more complex aspects of ETL challenging, but I grasped the concepts fairly quickly.""There are certain functions that are available in other ETL tools which are still not present in Matillion ETL. It would be good to have more features.""Sometimes, we have issues with the solution's stability and need to restart it for three weeks or more.""When using the SQL loader type there were not a lot of pre-processing features for the data. For example, if there is a table with twenty columns, but we only want to load ten columns. In that case, we can use a security script to select the specific columns needed. However, if we want to perform extensive pre-processing of the data, I faced some challenges with Matillion ETL. I did not encounter many challenges, but my overall experience is limited as I only have three years of experience.""The cost of the solution is high and could be reduced."

    Overview

AWS Database Migration Service, also known as AWS DMS, is a cloud service that facilitates the migration of relational databases, NoSQL databases, data warehouses, and other types of data stores. The product can be used to migrate users' data into the AWS Cloud or between combinations of on-premises and cloud setups. The solution allows migration between a wide variety of sources and target endpoints; the only requirement is that one of the endpoints has to be an AWS service. AWS DMS cannot be used to migrate from an on-premises database to another on-premises database.

AWS Database Migration Service allows users to perform one-time migrations, as well as replications of ongoing changes to keep sources and targets in sync. Organizations can utilize the AWS Schema Conversion Tool to translate their database schema to a new platform and then use AWS DMS to migrate the data. The product offers cost efficiency as a part of the AWS Cloud, as well as speed to market, flexibility, and security.

The main use cases of AWS Database Migration Service include:

    • Migrating from legacy or on-premises databases to managed cloud services through a simplified migration process.

    • Reliable replication of backup files to minimize downtime and data loss.

    • Improvement of integration through building of data lakes and performing real-time processing on change data from users' data stores.

    AWS Database Migration Service Components

AWS Database Migration Service consists of various components which function together to achieve users’ data migration. A migration on AWS DMS is structured in three levels: a replication instance, source and target endpoints, and a replication task. The components include the following actions:

    • Replication instance: AWS Database Migration Service provides users with a variety of replication instances, allowing them to select the optimal configuration for their use case. Depending on the instance class an organization selects, their replication instance provides a different amount of data storage.

    • Endpoint: AWS DMS uses an endpoint to access users' source or target data stores. The connection information is different and depends on the specific data store, but it usually consists of the following information: endpoint type, engine type, server name, port, encryption, and credentials. This information can easily be managed through the AWS DMS console.

    • Replication tasks: AWS Database Migration Service replication tasks can be used to move a set of data from the source endpoint to the target endpoint. The creation of a replication task is the last required step before starting a migration. Each replication task requires the following settings to be set: replication instance, source endpoint, target endpoint, and migration type options.

    • Ongoing replication or change data capture (CDC): AWS DMS also has the capacity to capture ongoing changes to the source that is stored while users migrate their data to a target.

    • Schema and code migration: The product requires assistance from tools such as MySQL Workbench, pgAdmin III, and Oracle SQL Developer to perform schema or code conversion, as it cannot do it on its own.

    AWS Database Migration Service Benefits

AWS Database Migration Service offers its users a wide range of benefits. Among them are the following:

    • The solution ensures minimal downtime, as it continuously replicates the changes to the user’s source database during migration.

    • AWS DMS provides users with flexibility, as it supports many commonly used databases, including commercial and open-source ones.

    • The product is user friendly, as it offers an easy set of tasks in the AWS Management Console.

    • Users of Aurora, Redshift, DocumentDB, and DynamoDB can benefit from the free use of AWS DMS.

    • AWS Database Migration Service is very reliable because it is a self-healing service that automatically restarts in cases of interruptions.

    • The product supports both homogenous migrations and heterogenous migrations.

    • AWS DMS accelerates business growth, as it scales businesses at an affordable price.

    Reviews from Real Users

Vishal S., an infrastructure lead at a computer software company, likes AWS Database Migration Service because it is easy to use and set up.

Vinod K., a data analyst at AIMLEAP, describes AWS DMS as an easy solution to save and extract data.

Open source integration platform designed to handle the most complex integration challenges between legacy, enterprise and On-Demand applications.

Matillion ETL is a powerful tool for extracting, transforming, and loading large amounts of data from various sources into cloud data warehouses like Snowflake. Its ability to load data dynamically and efficiently using metadata is a standout feature, as is its open-source ETL with good performance and high efficiency.

The solution has a graphical interface for jobs, is easily adjustable and extensible, and allows for scheduling and error reporting. Matillion ETL has helped organizations move to a cloud-based solution, bridge the gap between on-premises and on-cloud, and perform complex migration projects.
