Helps to set cost thresholds and receive alerts if the actual cost exceeds them
We regularly check the status of services to identify any unnecessary or unexpected costs. We utilize the billing dashboard in AWS to monitor daily costs and assess any significant increases. For instance, if our daily AWS expenses usually amount to $1,000 for running a hundred instances, and suddenly it spikes to $1,500, we investigate the reasons behind the increase. We scrutinize detailed reports, identify the areas and services contributing to the rise, and inform our manager. The dashboard overview in AWS Cost Explorer provides a high-level summary of our expenses, covering databases. This includes total costs, daily costs, and a breakdown by services. AWS Cost Explorer offers visualization tools like line charts, bar charts, and pie charts. These visualizations assist us in quickly understanding expenditures, enabling us to pinpoint areas that might need attention. The tool allows the creation of custom reports by selecting and configuring filtering and grouping options. Custom reports include a data range selector, making it easy to analyze expenses for specific periods such as daily, monthly, or custom durations. The budget feature is client-dependent. Before creating any services, we engage with our client to understand their requirements, such as the number of instances, CPU, and memory needed. Subsequently, we create a budgeting tool in servers based on these specifications. Our team configures custom notifications to alert us when actual costs or usage exceed predefined thresholds. These alerts can be sent via email or integrated with Simple Notification Service. I rate the overall product a ten out of ten.

Manages hybrid infrastructure seamlessly with flexible cluster scaling and comprehensive oversight
The most important aspect of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is that it helps us manage the infrastructure as a hyperconverged infrastructure in HCI mode. If I have different physical servers, I can map them into a cluster and manage the storage together. It provides flexibility to make use of storage in a clustered format instead of using it in an individual storage endpoint. We have the flexibility to have Nutanix-based licensing based on the core model, instead of having a specific cost on the cluster. The costing on a core model gives customers flexibility to add multiple cores to a single physical host and adjust the infrastructure accordingly, and we can scale up the cluster as needed. While other cloud providers, AWS or Azure, are mostly into cloud-based solutions, and Azure has introduced Azure Stack HCI for managing on-premises infrastructure, Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) provides flexibility from day one. We can manage both on-premises and Azure solutions using a single pane of glass, eliminating the need to navigate different windows or screens. It provides a comprehensive view of the infrastructure and highlights specific areas through alerts, giving us good visibility of infrastructure conditions.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The initial setup wasn't complex at all."
"The tool's cost management feature provides a comprehensive view of AWS costs, allowing us to plan and make cost-effective decisions. With AWS Cost Explorer, we can perform cost planning, generate recommendations, and provide clients with suggestions for resizing. This feature includes data filtering and protection, offering users insights into spending patterns through AWS spending patterns and planning tools. The product is easy to learn."
"AWS Cost Management is good for providing in-depth information in one place."
"All of the reporting features are very good, as they allow us to track monthly expenses and send relevant emails."
"I think everything about the solution is fine."
"Technical support for AWS is perfect."
"With the cost management tool, clients can optimize fine tuning their consumption, and optimize what they spend for these services."
"The product provides the ability to set cost limits and budgets for a set of resources on the network."
"Simplicity is most valuable because, with a single click, we have visibility of the entire infrastructure."
"What I appreciate about Nutanix Cloud Manager is the implementation and that process, as it is a cloud platform with integrated network, micro-segmentation, and support for Kubernetes with seamless scalability, and it saves me time within 30 minutes, overall saving about 10% of my time."
"As an example, we recently had to stand up an environment for a new project and we were able to do that in under two weeks, including deploy and deliver, whereas in the past that same project would have taken two or two and a half months."
"The most important aspect of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is that it helps us manage the infrastructure as a hyperconverged infrastructure in HCI mode."
"Previous inquiries took us almost a full day to prepare the VM to the liking of our users, now the deployment time is below 15 minutes and users can do it on their own!"
"What I found most valuable in Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is the one-click upgrade and the analytics it can provide for hyper-converged infrastructure."
"Stability is not going to be matched by anything else on the market."
"I like being able to expand my workload with Nutanix Cloud Manager at the best cost."

Cons

"We need finer-grained control over the roles and policies for users, specifying their permissions as to what they can look at."
"However, we are currently searching for another solution because there are a lot of missing things that we need."
"There could be an option to build custom dashboards for the platform."
"One area where AWS could improve is in the compatibility with other products like Cloud AD has."
"I would like to see AWS Cost Management be more precise in their calculations."
"The solution needs to improve the communication mechanism available to the stakeholders."
"This program is not very scalable."
"The cost management portion of the solution should be improved."
"I would like to see a desktop application for administration of the solution. That's the thing I missed the most. Other solutions have a client that you can install on your computer. You can actually connect to and do the administration from an application instead of using a web portal, which is what Nutanix provides."
"The stability of Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) is an area of concern where improvements are required."
"However, I feel that simpler onboarding and learning curves are needed as some users find the initial setup and configuration planning requires expertise."
"They should include more use cases for automation in administering the environment."
"We need to get more training and achieve much more consistent training. There is training, and there are courses, but in local terms, we are missing something that would allow us to have a more widespread training program."
"Nutanix Cloud Manager (NCM) could continue to improve its network with micro-segmentation, as their current solution for East-West traffic is not as mature as VMware's NSX, and they need to develop this area to better support the infrastructure."
"I do, however, wish that the cluster would come preinstalled with the OS, as ours did not, and it took quite a bit of tinkering, trial and error, calls to Nutanix support, and an ample amount of time to figure out how to get everything up and running."
"NCM's analytics could be better because we're not getting an accurate analysis of our virtual machines, and we're over-provisioning some of them."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We get AWS Cost Management for free because we use AWS services."
"We have signed a long-term contract with AWS. There are different service levels that will determine the level of support you have."
"The tool's pricing depends on our services."
"The product is affordable."
"AWS Cost Management is free to use."
"It's always difficult to discuss Nutanix pricing because the cost varies wildly depending on the customer and the region. Desktop virtualization is simpler because there is a defined scope. You can tell the Nutanix salesperson how many users you have. In a more traditional environment, it's always best to have NCM for monitoring because you'd be crazy not to."
"At the end of the day, the product justifies the cost, and it leads to a conversation with management over whether we actually need this feature and if there are any use cases for why we would want to keep it."
"It is expensive when you are looking at small locations that need low-latency workloads, but for larger locations, as compared to other guys, even using VMware, it is not that expensive because if you add it all up, it is going to be pretty much the same value."
"The pricing has been reasonable."
"The tool is expensive."
"While the product may seem to be more expensive at first, it ultimately pays for itself within a short time frame due to the hours saved on maintenance."
"The solution's price is reasonable."
"It's cost-effective. It's not necessarily cheap, but it's also not inordinately expensive. It comes down to how much you use it to offset some of the costs."
