Automation has simplified migrations and now needs to address complex legacy compatibility
The features I like the most about AWS Application Migration Service is its ease of use. That's the main thing. It's ease of use, and they have a detailed walkthrough, especially depending on different operating systems. The automation capabilities of AWS actually eliminate the long time and input that I have to put into migration. These days, I just run the agent, and then the agent does the job. All I have to do is actually look at the current migration status on the AWS dashboard. When it's done, I then do a quick switch over to the cloud. The key thing I really love is the simple moving of files from on-prem to the cloud.

I am currently using Nasuni for seismic data. We have a huge data size, and we want to reduce costs. Nasuni acts as a caching solution, so we put some data into the cache, and the rest goes to the blob, which helps us save on costs. We use it for applications like Petrol and Tech Log, where 3D…

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Live Migration's best feature is that it's free."
"The product is reasonably priced."
"Stability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten...Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten...I rate the solution's support a ten out of ten."
"The installation process and configuration processes are very straightforward, and in terms of maintenance, it's pretty easy as one person can handle it."
"I rate AWS Application Migration Service a nine out of ten overall."
"CloudEndure is a product that I recommend to my customers because it's very easy to implement, configure, and use."
"AWS Application Migration Service allows us to perform migrations with minimal downtime, which is crucial for our operations."
"The CloudEndure feature is most valuable because it is user friendly and very simple."
"The most valuable feature is the storage in that it only keeps the last-used data locally, while everything else is backed up to the cloud. That way, we never really have to worry about file space in each office or the replication to the other file servers for DR."
"The most valuable feature is that we have redundancy in our data. It's nice to know that it is cached both locally on the filters, as well as stored on that cloud."
"The snapshot functionality and the unified file system are definitely the most valuable features for us. The UFS allows everybody across the organization to see the exact same data at the same time, instead of having different file servers with different structures on them, and that's mission-critical. We have different branches throughout our organization that have to act on that data."
"We have absolutely seen an ROI, and we are super happy with our ROI."
"Nasuni has helped decrease capital costs by 66% since we don’t need to buy as much excess capacity."
"We have less downtime and fewer trouble tickets from users who cannot access their shared files. Nasuni has reduced the friction and noise associated with file management because the devices are more reliable."
"Nasuni reduced our overall storage footprint at our sites by 70 to 80 percent."
"One of Nasuni's best characteristics is its fully redundant system; we don't have to shift tapes or use other backup solutions. It's a good, full-featured product."

Cons

"There are some features in the Migration Factory that could be integrated directly into AWS Application Migration Service."
"The schema conversion is not included in the document management services itself. Complex formations require additional steps."
"One drawback to using CloudEndure is that the default is to give one small, lightweight server, which is created in the cloud."
"I think it is important to have more logs, and more details would be great because we have just logged on the client's side, but there weren't many details on the cloud."
"I do not see any improvements required for the CloudEndure."
"Live Migration has some issues with target setups."
"We would like to have a disaster recovery feature included in this solution."
"However, I give it a six mainly due to the compatibility issues with legacy systems, which is an individual problem I am currently facing."
"There is some room for improvement when it comes to monitoring. We are not using Nasuni monitoring. We are using our own monitoring through Xenos. Nasuni can provide better monitoring capabilities for us to monitor all the filers and NMC so that we don't have to use a third-party tool."
"It would be helpful to have more built-in analytics tools to compare the storage costs between the various cloud providers. I would also like some graphing capabilities. We had a tool called Grafana that we used for graphing. I think some more visual analytics like that would be nice."
"If you need performance with less latency, you should go with another solution."
"One thing to consider is that Nasuni will have the same limitations that a traditional file storage solution will have, although that is because they are taking the place of a traditional architectural model. For example, Office 365 supports collaboration on documents such as Excel files and Word documents, but because Nasuni is a traditional file server, in that sense, it can't make use of that functionality."
"When users from one office save their changes, their peers in another office can see the changes within minutes. Of course, this is an area for constant improvement and we hope that they can still reduce the amount of time it takes to replicate changes."
"When we first set up our bandwidth limiting, we had a few problems when it came to managing it. This is something that could be made easier; however, we were able to make the changes that we needed to for our environment."
"Nasuni could improve cloud integration and documentation of various ways we can leverage the product. It integrates with Azure, but the native Azure File Sync solution lets you divide data into tiers like hot, cool, and archived. Nasuni doesn't allow you to break the data apart into those tiered categories."
"One area that we've recently spoken to Nasuni about is single sign-on."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"For me, the price of the tool is cheap and very good. It is flexible pricing since you pay just for what you use."
"Live Migration's price is good."
"Its pricing can get a tad expensive. When we first took Nasuni out, we were just paying for the service. We got storage at a reduced rate. It has now changed, and they're now more of an all-in-one type of thing. It can be quite expensive, but it works out. Apart from that, licensing-wise, it's very simple."
"I would not say it is economically priced, but it is affordable. If you can afford to pay for it, it is worth the money, but it is definitely not overpriced. It is priced about where it needs to be in the market. We were satisfied with the way they did their licensing and how they handled it. I believe they actually license by data size. It is based on how much data is being held on the machine and replicated, and that's completely understandable. So, for us, their pricing was as expected and affordable."
"It has a license fee as well as hardware costs, which we would incur if we want to use Nasuni Cloud Storage Gateway for upgrades."
"The cost of licensing is negotiated and billed annually per terabyte."
"There are cheaper forms of storage, but Nasuni is fairly priced for the functionality it offers. I can get basic file shares provisioned in Azure and pay for the storage and the CPU. The overall cost would be much less than Nasuni, but I would need to build the management console and encryption process, so it would cost a lot to develop that kind of functionality."
"It's cheaper than a lot of alternatives but it's not cheap."
"The pricing is on par with everybody else, and fair."
"Nasuni pricing is average; it's not too high or too low."
