Struggles with handwritten document accuracy and cost concerns persist
I just wanted to read some bank statements, receipts, and scan documents. I only tried it for those purposes, but I didn't get to use it extensively Amazon Textract was easy to use. The training processes were also straightforward. Despite its ease of use, I had concerns about its accuracy. The…

Pre-trained models work well, but it is very expensive
We have to do manual validation for some of the things due to the OCR engine not being so accurate. For example, S is read as 5, 5 as S, 2 as Z, and Z as 2. In the case of currency, if one dot is missing, it gives a completely incorrect number. These discrepancies should be fixed because if the OCR itself doesn't work properly, then AI doesn't help with that. When AI is used for training models, the AI Center works precisely, but if the data itself is wrong, we can't do anything. If the extraction of data is proper, it definitely helps. However, 20% errors could be reduced if the OCR engine were better. In future updates, I would like to see better handling of issues such as when a dot is missing in currency, for example, with dollars, it should handle that automatically. It's very expensive. If the volume increases, we can't afford to use Document Understanding. We are thinking of moving to another solution because we are expecting 80,000 to 100,000 invoices.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"Amazon Textract was easy to use."
"In UiPath Document Understanding, I use two extractors. One is the Intelligent Form Extractor and the other is the Machine Learning Extractor. The first one is very useful and user-friendly. When we have a single template or two to three templates, Intelligent Form Extractor is much easier to use. But if we have multiple templates, it's better to go with ML Extractor as you can train the model with different templates."
"UiPath Document Understanding is user-friendly, with an easy-to-use self-trained model, and the OCR it provides does a good job even with scanned PDFs."
"The most valuable feature of UiPath Document Understanding is the AI Center."
"Invoice processing is the most valuable feature. Most of my customers use Document Understanding for invoice processing. That's one of the most common use cases. Typically, each customer starts their RPA journey with the finance department because that's the area where you can see the most benefit."
"Has a very good machine learning feature."
"Machine learning is the most valuable feature of UiPath Document Understanding."
"The most valuable feature in UiPath Document Understanding is the identification of the fields column in the PDF documents."
"It has advanced capabilities compared to other competitors, whether Blue Prism or Automation Anywhere."

Cons

"The product has not given correct results for me. It was not accurate, especially with handwritten items and documents with pencil marks, which Amazon Textract failed to identify correctly."
"One area where UiPath could improve is by including pre-trained models for general-use documents specific to the Middle East."
"The licensing model poses a significant challenge due to the fee charged for posting a model, which impedes the development of productivity-enhancing models."
"The signature and handwriting are a pain point for the OCR and have room for improvement."
"Its pricing can be improved."
"UiPath Document Understanding requires more database connectors."
"Making the design of Forms AI more flexible and accommodating to companies' branding preferences would be beneficial."
"It would be ideal if they could include more packages for more use cases."
"I would like more flexibility in Document Understanding's validation center."

"On a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive, I rate the solution a nine."

"Our clients are concerned about the volume-based pricing model, as UiPath charges more than other vendors in the market."
"The cost per license is significant, approaching ten thousand dollars."
"The price is on the high end."
"While Robotic Process Automation tools can be expensive, UiPath Document Understanding is no exception."
