Principal Engineer at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
Cloud database has delivered high performance and cost savings for data recovery and growth
Amazon can make better access levels and reduce costs for Amazon Aurora. A cost reduction would support multiple teams to adopt this solution since the cost is currently higher. Comparatively, we have the feature of scaling and everything we need. If you launch PostgreSQL on-premises, you need to have a separate DBA for maintenance and everything. If Amazon reduces the cost of Amazon Aurora, it would support large team adoption. A great feature to see in the next version of Amazon Aurora would be improvements in vectorization. In our PostgreSQL, we have pg_vector that helps with vectorizing many of the tables and that is used for data science projects. If Amazon improves this vectorization, it would be much more useful for data science and AI projects.

Mainframe modernization architecture at a tech vendor with 10,001+ employees
AI-driven monitoring has transformed batch anomaly detection and improved mainframe performance
BMC AMI Data monitors technical components very well, but end-to-end business transaction tracing is still limited. For instance, the flow of business transactions from order creation to generation of the ASN is limited. I would say it would be great if cross-system business flow visibility were improved. Moreover, I would say stronger AI root cause accuracy is needed. Current AI capabilities are useful but still heavily rule-based in many environments. I would also suggest having a somewhat easier UI for better user experience, as it remains operational heavy, menu-driven, and less intuitive for new engineers. Cleaner dashboards, drill-down visualizations, interactive topology maps, and easier search or filtering would be beneficial. Additionally, better cloud and hybrid visibility along with native event-driven monitoring would improve the solution. I feel there are still some features that need improvement. Particularly, business cross-functional visibility and cross-systems visibility need enhancement.

Pros

"The migration process to Amazon Aurora is the best part; it's one of its key strengths, as we hardly had any hiccups during migration, which was very smooth and pretty straightforward given our data was mostly in English."
"The most valuable feature is that the maintainability is offloaded to the service provider, so I don't have to maintain a database or do any administrative tasks, which comes in handy."
"Amazon Aurora's best features are about scaling up and scaling down, which is perfect."
"Aurora's features that I find the most beneficial include its database backup strategy, performance options, and input-output operations."
"One of the standout features of Amazon Aurora is that we do not need to maintain disaster recovery or manage availability zones."
"My overall experience with Amazon Aurora is very positive. I rate it ten out of ten for its reliability and efficiency."
"Another advantage is that with AWS handling administration, responsibilities like database provisioning and maintenance are significantly reduced."
"Amazon Aurora stands out for its ease of use in a managed environment, inbuilt security, continuous backups, numerous read replicas, multi-region automated replication, and seamless integration with other AWS services."
"I have reduced a lot of incident failures since using BMC AMI Data, am able to see a significant improvement in CICS transactional response times and overall region health, and have stopped the storage violations, transactional bottlenecks, and task buildups that I faced earlier, with this improvement very visible in my high-volume real-time environments."
"BMC AMI Data has positively impacted the organization because it saved time and reduced errors."
"BMC AMI Data has had a positive impact on my organization by improving the visibility and reliability of our mainframe."
"BMC AMI Data has positively impacted my organization as the data's performance is faster, reduced the storage cost through optimization, automatically diagnosed the problems, and resolved them accordingly."

Cons

"I would like to see more AI-related features in future releases."
"AWS RDS doesn't provide an option to apply one-off patches, which can be critical for business due to unexpected product bugs."
"Aurora’s finance aspects could be improved, particularly in reducing the per-hour use cost."
"Amazon Aurora should upgrade its base PostgreSQL versions more frequently and offer all PostgreSQL extensions."
"I would like to see some tutorials from Amazon for Aurora because I'm too new to it."
"In my experience, I didn't see the claimed speed, and when you factor in the cost, or the extra cost of Aurora compared to a normal database, it didn't justify the cost from a performance standpoint, but it did justify the cost because we didn't have to have multiple instances, Redis caches, and other things like that."
"It would have been helpful if they had provided some benchmarking numbers."
"Room for improvement might be in the UI, integrations, or data working capabilities for better user experience."
"I think there is nothing to be improved in BMC AMI Data, but I believe from the customer service point of view, it should be more convenient rather than mailing and waiting for twenty-four hours to get a response."
"I have had a good experience but there are a few improvements. The user interface feels a bit outdated compared to modern monitoring tools."
"BMC AMI Data monitors technical components very well, but end-to-end business transaction tracing is still limited."
"BMC AMI Data could be improved in backup timing, as it should be faster compared to the current situation."
