What is our primary use case?

The primary use is to monitor any type of migration. For example, if you have one landscape on the VML virtualization platform and the second on Hyper-V, then two different virtual environments are present. In this instance, you cannot use native tools for the migration in case an application path is present. You have to use a third-party tool, such as Carbonite Migrate, that can do the migration from one platform to another platform when you switch the setting. 

When B2B migration is also not possible through native tools, this tool can be used. In P2P migration, if you have a customer who uses the physical infrastructure, prior to migration you will need to create a similar environment in the other data center to which the data will migrate. Carbonite Migrate can be used for this purpose as well. We can then take an image of the current system and run it onto another system as a test. There are multiple use cases for this tool.

What is most valuable?

Carbonite Migrate works well in Windows platform migrations and in the case of a VML platform. The migration is smooth in Windows environments. 

If you want to do B2B migrations or P2P migrations, this solution can be used in any environment, whether it's public, private, or on-premise. It's an any-to-any migration solution.

What needs improvement?

Migration in RHEL and Linux environments can be improved. During RHEL migration with multiple data areas, you have to create a similar source environment at the destination. This can be challenging because you have to install it, create the VM, install over it, and mount it at the mount point. Only then can you do the migration. 

As a prerequisite in the case of a Windows platform, the .NET framework may cause some challenges as well. This can be done only in the latest version and is not possible in the earlier versions. We could do the migration for a customer with the older version but only after upgrading to the newer version of the .NET servers. This requires application downtime, and if the customer does not want any downtime during the migration, it can be very challenging.

I would also like to see improvement in the data analytical loopholes in terms of Linux migration.

What do I think about the stability of the solution?

This tool is generally used only once a year. Once the migration is complete, this tool is not in the picture.

How are customer service and support?

We have faced a few issues with technical support. During working hours, we were able to find the support we needed. However, we have struggled when problems have come up after 10:00 p.m.

How was the initial setup?

In Windows environments, the initial set up is good, but in Linux environments, it is challenging.

What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?

In terms of pricing, I think it's an expensive tool.

What other advice do I have?

On a scale from one to ten, I give Carbonite Migrate a 7. It is a good third-party migration tool because it can be used with clients who have heterogeneous environments. It is a good tool for any-to-any migration.
