What is our primary use case?
I primarily use
IBM PowerVM to create and manage servers in a cloud environment. Customers who previously used Power Servers on-premises can now migrate seamlessly to Power Virtual Servers on the cloud. We serve clients transitioning from on-premises to cloud using
IBM PowerVM for hosting and application migration.
What is most valuable?
IBM PowerVM supports multiple operating systems such as IBM i, AIX, and Linux, allowing users to run various applications seamlessly in a cloud environment. The Live Partition Mobility feature, although not detailed in my experience, supports versatile deployment. IBM PowerVM's seamless cloud migration and operating system support make it valuable for clients willing to transition to cloud environments while maintaining reliability.
What needs improvement?
I have not encountered any issues or dissatisfaction with IBM PowerVM so far. Clients using it have been satisfied, and there have been no glitches since its introduction.
For how long have I used the solution?
I have been working with IBM PowerVM for almost two and a half years.
What was my experience with deployment of the solution?
I have not encountered any complications or deployment issues with IBM PowerVM. It offers seamless migration from on-premises to the cloud environment.
What do I think about the stability of the solution?
Our clients in India using Power Servers have been running their servers for the last four to five years without any reboot. The Power Virtual Servers introduced in May 2023 have encountered no complications or stability issues so far.
What do I think about the scalability of the solution?
I think IBM PowerVM uses a 'pay as you grow' model, allowing customers to scale their resources as needed. Starting with as little as .25 core, customers can grow their resource allocation as their requirements increase.
How are customer service and support?
IBM has an established technical support team and partners who provide extended support to end customers. Support is not a challenge as they have separate support for IBM PowerVM.
How would you rate customer service and support?
Which solution did I use previously and why did I switch?
Previously, I worked with Oracle solutions. I switched to IBM PowerVM almost two and a half years ago.
How was the initial setup?
The transition from on-premises to a cloud environment with IBM PowerVM is seamless and readily available.
What about the implementation team?
IBM provides its own technical team for support, and we partner with them to ensure end customers receive the necessary assistance.
What was our ROI?
If calculated over a five-year period, IBM PowerVM is 30 to 40% more cost-effective than physical servers despite initial costs seeming high.
What's my experience with pricing, setup cost, and licensing?
While initially costly, the ROI over five years proves IBM PowerVM is cost-effective, resulting in a 30 to 40% reduction in costs compared to a physical setup.
What other advice do I have?
I rate IBM PowerVM a ten out of ten for its capabilities in the cloud environment. Although Power Virtual Servers are relatively new in India, the physical servers have been in use for over twenty years. IBM PowerVM is ideal for enterprise virtualization needs, efficiently supporting extensive transactions, particularly in the banking sector. IBM could enhance its marketing strategy to expand its reach more. Overall, I rate it ten out of ten for its effectiveness.
Which deployment model are you using for this solution?
Public Cloud
If public cloud, private cloud, or hybrid cloud, which cloud provider do you use?
IBM
