All Microsoft applications, whether database or analytics, are a little costlier compared to Google products, and this is a barrier that needs to be crossed so that all its applications become more affordable. For example, startups typically go for free tools. Microsoft should offer these products for free to startups or perhaps free for the first year or two years, so that startups can use these applications, and once they grow bigger and have larger revenue, they can purchase it at a reasonable cost. All Microsoft tools need to cut down on their price and have a better strategy around pricing for the masses. If you sell only to ten customers, your revenue is lesser, but if you give something for free to some customers, two years down the line they will purchase it. Microsoft Azure DocumentDB still needs the ability to connect to other analytics easily without any additional integrator. For example, if I can connect to Google Analytics or other analytics that are not Microsoft tools using this database, that would be a good source of revenue. If I have already purchased Google Analytics in my company and I need a database, and Microsoft Azure DocumentDB can very easily connect or integrate to my Google Analytics, I would not have to think twice. Cross-company application connectivity is something that needs to be worked on.

The integration between data warehouse could be improved. Nowadays, a lot of data is getting generated, so certain ETL flexible scripts with backend database integrations would be an improvement I could see. I will not be able to clearly say there is currently a deficiency there. All our DBs are integrated with a backend data warehouse, not necessarily AWS. When third-party data warehouses are integrated, we are seeing some ETL job performance issues. It is a one-off scenario so we have not thoroughly done any troubleshooting on that. It could be platform or third-party related issue. From the AWS standpoint, if robust integration and data warehouse integration specific tools are added in the advanced suite, that would definitely be helpful.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The most beneficial features of Microsoft Azure DocumentDB that I noticed is that it appeared to be straightforward, it was ease of use, it was not complicated compared to some of the other tools that are out there, the teams were familiar with it, and it integrated well with other Microsoft products."
"We have immeasurable benefits mainly in reduced operational effort and the time saved on routine database administration."
"Microsoft Azure DocumentDB is never down because of its scalability feature."
"The most valuable feature of Microsoft Azure DocumentDB in my daily work is the speed."
"Microsoft Azure DocumentDB has positively impacted my organization by allowing us to reduce database costs by 30%."
"One of the most appreciated aspects of Microsoft Azure DocumentDB is the elastic scaling feature which has significantly helped manage business growth for two customers who have employed it, experiencing a dramatic rise in improvement."
"We haven't had any issues with stability."
"The integration capabilities of MongoDB are fine for the solutions that we use in our company."
"One of the most valuable features is the ability to Text Search can be used anywhere and anytime."
"We capture more than 30 million records every week in IoT NS and MongoDB has been serving us well so far, making it easier to maintain the data with its document-based storage."
"Based on our experience so far, it is stable."
"I would recommend MongoDB because it is widely used by many organizations."
"The community is great if you have problem."
"It stores historical data with ease. For example, if you are a healthcare member, then you will have multiple records of visits to the doctors. To store such data in Oracle Database, you have to create many records. You might also have duplication problems because your records are going in again and again, because of which the data warehouse and the maintenance cost will be huge. MongoDB is comparatively lightweight. It is a JSON extract. Once you define a schema and extract it, you can push all the relationships in any way you want. It is easier to define and get different types of transactions into MongoDB. It is also easier to set it up as compared to other solutions. MongoDB is a NoSQL database, which means it is a document DB in which you can store documents that you created in BSON. It is pretty fast in response. It is faster than relational databases because it does not define any primary keys, secondary keys, tertiary keys, and all those kinds of things."

Cons

"It is a bit expensive, especially concerning the elastic scale."
"Microsoft gives you the base functionality which you can grow from, but some tools perhaps go a bit further because that is their only focus or niche."
"Microsoft Azure DocumentDB could be improved with more straightforward cost and performance optimization guidance, especially for understanding resource usage and selecting the right configuration for different workloads."
"All Microsoft applications, whether database or analytics, are a little costlier compared to Google products, and this is a barrier that needs to be crossed so that all its applications become more affordable."
"Maybe in the future, I would like to see relationships between one document set and another document set."
"Overall the solution is expensive."
"The solution can be a bit tough to set up if you don't have knowledge about how the database works."
"The solution should have better integration."
"MongoDB would be improved with more integration, particularly for cloud environments like Google BigQuery."
"Its security features can be better. Sometimes, my higher authority says that we are not going to use MongoDB because it doesn't provide that much security for the RDBMS or relational data that we use for transactions."
"I'd like to see an ID generator. It's very technical but I don't think it has one, so we have to go to great lengths to work around that."
"There can be stability issues."
"It could be much more flexible like SequoiaDB. I would like to see more flexibility in the next release, especially when working with Microsoft Windows. A lot of people struggle with MongoDB because of their Windows versions. But Linux is faultless and mostly runs nicely."
