Enhancing analytics with seamless data dumping and reliable support
Our primary use case is data storage and analytics The organization has decided to purchase a full stack solution from IBM due to positive responses, which helped them upgrade from the previous version. The data dumping into the raw zone and the feature of BigQuery is quite attractive. There…

Transformation in data querying speed with good migration capabilities
Snowflake is a data lake on the cloud where all processing happens in memory, resulting in very fast query responses. One key feature is the separation of compute and storage, which eliminates storage limitations. It also has tools for migrating data from legacy databases like Oracle. Its stability and efficiency enhance performance greatly. Tools in the AI/ML marketplace are readily available without needing development.

Harnessing advanced parallelism for top performance while embracing cloud trends
Teradata is primarily used for data warehousing across all customers. My clients have built-in applications that use Teradata, and their use varies from customer to customer, depending on the industry and database size. The primary function is as an OLAP analytical ecosystem Scalability is…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The performance is okay as long as the volume of queries is not too high."
"The way that it scales will help a lot of customers that are stuck with Netezza boxes that can't grow any larger."
"It will be MPP, so performance should improve."
"It is stable when there is support from IBM."
"I like the idea that you can assign roles and responsibilities, limiting access to data."
"The platform's most valuable features include its ability to effectively summarize and manage large datasets, allowing multiple teams to analyze and generate insights."
"It is a cloud solution with many useful features. It has the data science capability. It can transform data and prepare data for a data science project with scalability."
"From a data warehouse perspective, it's an excellent all-round solution. It's very complete."
"For us, the virtual warehousing is likely the most valuable aspect."
"My company wanted to have all our data in one single place and this what we use Snowflake for. Snowflake also allows us to build connectors to different data sources."
"The speed of data loading and being able to quickly create the environment are most valuable."
"I like Snowflake's data exchange capabilities. It can exchange data with downstream systems and other vendor partners as well."
"It is a stable program."
"Teradata's best feature is its speed with historical data."
"It has increased the speed of reporting."
"The ability to handle machine data parallel processing is the most valuable feature of Teradata."
"Teradata's most valuable feature is that it's easy to use."
"The data mover is valuable over the last two years as it allows us to achieve data replication to our disaster recovery systems."
"The most valuable feature is the ease of uploading data from multiple sources."
"Auto-partitioning and indexing, and resource allocation on the fly are key features."

Cons

"There are some limitations in adding data files to table spaces, and improvements are needed for regional support."
"Ultimately, the product itself has challenges and we are not currently satisfied with the support, either."
"Containers get corrupted very easily. Restoring them using GPFS can result in a lot of issues."
"Right now, we are implementing on ESX VMware 6.0. Support for this platform is poor. Also, one of the backup/recovery options is broken and IBM is not addressing the issue."
"Tech support for dashDB is awful. We usually have tickets open for three to four weeks."
"I don't know about GCP, if they have connected for GCP. If they don't, they should allow for it."
"Snowflake has to improve their spatial parts since it doesn't have much in terms of geo-spatial queries."
"The data sharing capabilities across business units within the organization should be better."
"There are a lot of features that they need to come up with. A lot of functions are missing in Snowflake, so we have to find a workaround for those. For example, OUTER APPLY is a basic function in SQL Server, but it is not there in Snowflake. So, you have to write complex code for it."
"I am still in the learning stage. It has good security, but it can always be more secure."
"The scheduling system can definitely be better because we had to use external airflow for that. There should be orchestration for the scheduling system. Snowflake currently does not support machine learning, so it is just storage. They also need some alternatives for SQL Query. There should also be support for Spark in different languages such as Python."
"I would like to see more transparency in data processing, ATLs, and compute areas - which should give more comfort to the end users."
"From the documentation, the black box is not very descriptive. Snowflake does not reveal how exactly the data is processed or sourced."
"It needs a teaching web site with more training on third-party tools used for BI."
"Teradata needs to pay attention to the cloud-based solution to make sure it runs smoothly."
"There is a need to improve performance in high transaction processes, as well as the reporting system."
"Teradata hardly supports unstructured data or semi-structured data"
"Data synchronization to the DR site."
"I would like more security and speed."
"Teradata needs to expand the kind of training that's available to customers. Teradata only offers training directly and doesn't delegate to any third-party companies. As a result, it's harder to find people trained on Teradata in our market relative to Oracle."
"It's primarily designed for big projects and therefore, the pricing is pretty high. It's not suitable for smaller companies."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If your going to go with warehouse DB/dashDB, use the cloud or Sailfish version."
"Snowflake is a cost-effective solution."
"The tool's pricing is based on the number of queries you want on your database. The cost is small. To get the tool's pricing, you can do the math based on the cost per query, which is $0.002. If you're running your queries frequently, your charges will be higher than running fewer queries."
"The solution is costly, making it unsuitable for midsize organizations due to its price."
"Snowflake is expensive, but when I consider what we get for that price, it's fair. I rate the solution three out of five for affordability, right in the middle."
"It is pay-as-you-go. Its cost is in the medium range."
"Currently, we have a trial account, so we don't need a license. After our project starts, we would need a permanent license."
"Part of the problem with the pricing is that it is very difficult for businesses to get an idea of how expensive it might be until they actually start using Snowflake."
"Snowflake is cost-effective."
"Teradata used to be expensive, but they have been lowering their prices."
"The tool costs about 30,000 euros a month, while Azure Synapse SQL only costs 10,000."
"Teradata is not cheap, but you get what you pay for."
"Teradata is expensive, so it's typically marketed to big customers. However, there have been some changes, and Teradata is now offering more flexible pricing models and equipment leasing. They've added pay-as-you-go and cloud models, so it's changing, but Teradata is generally known as an expensive high-end product."
"Price is quite high, so if it is really possible to use other solutions (e.g. you do not have strict requirements for performance and huge data volumes), it might be better to look at alternatives from the RDBMS world."
"The price needs to be more competitive as Hadoop, Redshift, Snowflake, etc are constantly making way into EDW space."
"I would advise others to look into migration and setup as a fixed price and incorporate a SaaS option for other Teradata services."
"The product cost is high for what the client gets. There may be more cost-effective solutions for small and medium-sized organizations."
