Supports long-running asynchronous processes effectively but has not evolved much in recent years
I think Camunda is focusing too much on the SaaS offering right now and not much on improving and developing the product itself. I did not see any innovations on that aspect, especially for the open-source version. I was making some tests recently and the tool seemed pretty much the same as it was three or four years ago. Since they made the move to cloud deployment in a more SaaS-oriented way, they do not invest too much in the community version. To be honest, it did not change much from the Activiti initial version. Activiti was pretty much what Camunda is today. They invested a lot on Zeebe and made it the engine for their SaaS cloud version. Camunda itself, the embedded engine, did not evolve too much. They could invest more on that.

Good reporting, a very good dashboard, and easy to set up
We primarily use the solution for processes like preparing worksheets. It's essential to the human resource process like expenses and allowances The new reporting and the new dashboard features are really good. The design of the interface, in general, could be improved. It could be a bit more…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The way to create workflows is straightforward, which is one of the major benefits of the Camunda platform."
"One reason we selected Camunda or Cloud/DB is that it comes with the support of the BPMN notation, which helps to define processes in a standard manner. Another reason was that Camunda Cloud, as the name says, is designed for a new cloud era."
"It is a scalable product. I would rate the scalability a ten out of ten."
"The architectural part of Camunda for workflow design is highly valuable, especially the Camunda Modeler, which allows quick process design and implementation."
"I love that Camunda is a very developer-friendly platform, and my customers have evaluated the pricing as reasonable."
"The BPMN diagram is valuable. For our use case of transferring money from one account to another, the connections have to be done in the traditional financial ways. There are a lot of unexpected errors and a lot of instability with this kind of system, and we are using Camunda in order to have clear flows. With BPMN, I can show a flow to my business partner, and the business team can easily understand what's going on. The technical team can understand what the implementation is, and we can model different errors and the process for recovering from these errors."
"The most valuable features are that it's lightweight, can be embedded in existing Java code, and keeps track of the workflow state and the instances that we need."
"Camunda Platform is better than IBM BPM, and Azure; it is more elaborate, divided across the platform with integration separated from the UI and internal work, and it also integrates well."
"It is very stable. There is no downtime."
"I find the flexibility most valuable, and being able to connect and integrate with various systems, as well as being solution oriented, is valuable to me as well."
"The new reporting and the new dashboard features are really good."

Cons

"In terms of features, it meets my needs, but I would like Camunda to have an office in Brazil and provide training in Portuguese. They should provide regional support and training courses in Portuguese."
"Camunda could be improved by making it easier to modify a process. You can program it to follow a process, but it is difficult to modify the process when the application is in use. It could also be improved by making it easier to use the visual platform without needing to be informed on that. Sometimes, we programmers haven't used it in the past, and it's a bit difficult to learn it."
"It's costly and not accessible for small enterprises or startups. It would be great if Camunda offered a tier plan for smaller companies."
"In the future, I would like to see better transactional integrity."
"Initially, installation was challenging, but recent improvements have made it much easier."
"The deployment model could be improved for easier implementation. More open documentation would be beneficial to understand the deployment process better and facilitate easier setup."
"We have to wait to see if Bonita provided us with some features that Camunda does not or if we experience any stability issues."
"If there were some industry templates it would have helped significantly, because it is similar to a process map for a domain. That is what we are currently creating, a domain-relevant process map."
"The design of the interface, in general, could be improved. It could be a bit more user-friendly."
"The areas that would benefit in improvement would be the training information, the white papers and useful tutorials as to how to build these typical solutions."
"The setup and configuration is complex."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have an annual subscription to this solution."
"I think Camunda BPM can improve their licensing costs. It isn't easy to find clients with Camunda BPM licenses mainly because it's quite expensive."
"The most attractive feature of the product is that it is open source."
"We use the open-source version, which can be used at no cost."
"We use the free version."
"It is less cost-prohibitive than other solutions on the market. This solution was in our price range."
"Camunda is much cheaper."
"While the license isn't budget-friendly, careful consideration and calculated planning for a significant number of licenses can make it more cost-effective."
