Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It allows us to create a testing environment that is repeatable. And we can manage the data so that our testing becomes automated, everything from actually performing the testing to also evaluating the results.""It saves us time from generating the same amount of data in real-time.""Core features that we needed were synthetic data creation, and to be able to do complex data mining and profiling across multiple databases with referential integrity intact across them. CA's product actually came through with the highest score and met the most of our needs.""The whole process is done by functions which are compiled on the source environment itself. Normally, you take the data from the source, you manage them - for example, mask them - and then you load this masked data into the destination. With this solution, it's completely different. On the source environment, there are functions compiled inside the environment, which means they are amazingly fast and, on the source environment, data are masked already. So when you take them, you already take masked data from the source. So you can copy them, even with an unencrypted pipe.""The combination of extract, mask, and load, along with synthetic data, is what is generally needed by any of our clients, and CA TDM has really good compatibility in both of the areas.""The data generation is one of the most valuable features because we are able to write a lot of rules. We have some specific rules here in Turkey, for example, Turkish ID IBAN codes for banks.""When I run my App Test, I can directly connect with TDM. I can publish all my data into one table in TDM, then run my App Test directly.""The solution is very user-friendly. For instance, if I wanted to create a project with Data Generation, Data sub-setting, Selective sub-setting, and Data Marketing, it can be easily done in TDM. And if you want to export these project definitions from one system to another, it can be done with just one click."

"We can create synthetic test data for our different development teams without needing production data, which is an excellent capability.""Its ease of use is valuable. It's pretty straightforward. With minimal training or with minimal guidance, it can be used.""Technical support is good. They are friendly and fast.""The most valuable feature of DATPROF Privacy for us is the possibility to mask sensitive test and development data on different kinds of databases. Furthermore, the tool comes with different useful masking functions. It is possible to mask deterministic and it is possible to add your own functions. The tool has an intuitive interface and customer support is fast and efficient.""I am very impressed with the capabilities of the software.""The data modeling software gave additional insights for debugging in the case of circular foreign keys.""We have some customers who are in both SAP and non-SAP. When we do scrambling for different applications, it is extremely important that DATPROF and the SAP applications talk to each other and synchronize. Otherwise... [an] identity [can be] lost, from a name perspective.""The most valuable feature is that it's easy to use... We were able to quickly port a JD Edwards application into the DATPROF solution and we were able to scramble the data in that application. It's a single tool that helps us to do that across applications."

Cons
"Broadcom TDM takes a long time to import documents, which wastes time that could be spent on other things.""There are different modules for masking. There is a portal and there is a standalone application as well. The standalone application is more old-fashioned. When you write rules on this old-fashioned interface, because it has more complex functions available for use, you can't migrate them to the portal.""As the solution continues to evolve, the one thing I like about it is the API-friendly layers that they have added into the realm. So, I just would like to see more support around that and more usability.""We had one user that was primarily working on it, who probably spent a few months initially setting it up.""We are using a specific database. We are not using Oracle or SQL, Microsoft. We are using Teradata. There are some things that they don't have in their software. For example, when delivering data, they are not delivering them in the fastest possible way. There are some things which are faster.""They should make the Portal a little more user-friendly, make it even easier to configure things directly from the Portal.""A lot of research, data analysis, and work needs to be done on the source system in the tool which requires a data expert. This tool definitely requires a senior person to work on this issue, as it might be a challenge for a tester.""It has a feature called TDM Portal, where testers can find test data by themselves, based on multiple models. They can reserve the data so that it belongs to one group or individual. Obviously, that data is not available to anybody else... This feature is for one environment. But if a different group of testers wanted that data for a different environment, they can't use it via CA TDM. That feature doesn't exist."

"The synthetic data-generating element of the tool is relatively new, so we sometimes encounter bugs, though when we inform DATPROF, they act quickly to fix any issues. Of course, the fewer bugs we face, the better.""They could improve the solution by expanding the APIs. If there were options to integrate it with other solutions, that would help.""From what I know, there are some challenges with respect to the number of data formats that can be made available. This is something that can be improved.""Although it is possible to mask flat files inside DATPROF Privacy, the current solution is solid. However, it can be improved with an improved user interface.""The product could be improved by adding functions to mask flat files and XML data.""We organized the orchestration via ServiceNow/Runbook. It would be nice if DatProf software had this functionality as well.""Right now, we need to make process agreements with our supplier to keep our source and target database in line with the current production version. This may become an issue when (if) we reach a CI/CD level with multiple releases per day.""I feel that we have to do a lot of reworking of the template implementations... Maybe it is a limitation, but as a customer, it feels like we need to start from scratch every time. It would help if we could reuse at least some of what we have already done."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It can be scaled for as many licenses as the customer is willing to pay. It's kind of expensive."
  • "Know all the data requirements before buying this product. There are a lot of features for this tool, which may or may not be useful to a particular company. Make sure of what your requirements for your data are."
  • "Part of the licensing is dependent on whether you want to use the portal. It's based on floating users. The other part is dependent on what type of system you are using. We are using mainframe, so we paid good money for a mainframe license."
  • "The cost of this tool is pretty high... CA provides licenses for different utilities like masking but even if you break it up, the pricing is still high."
  • "I would rate Broadcom TDM's pricing as four out of five."
  • "My company makes yearly payments toward the licensing costs. So, I consider the licensing costs to be expensive, especially considering what I have heard from my colleagues."
  • "Mainly, we compete with the IBM team and Informatica, and if you compare the license cost, Broadcom is too flexible. Depending on the customer's budget, we suggest they buy only respective SKUs, and it's much cheaper compared to others because we have gone over multiple deals where pricing was never a factor in differentiating products."
  • "The tool's pricing is high."

  • "I'm not part of the financial team, but as far as I understand, the price is very reasonable compared to the competitors."
  • "It's very competitive. There is a good price-to-feature relation. It doesn't give us the feeling that we are overspending on something. It provides the right value at the right price. It's worth it."

    Overview

    CA Test Data Manager offers an automated solution to one of the most time-consuming and resource-intensive problems in Continuous Delivery - creating, maintaining and provisioning of the test data needed to rigorously test evolving applications. CA Test Data Manager uniquely combines elements of data subsetting, masking and synthetic, on-demand data generation to enable testing teams to meet the agile needs of the organization.

    At DATPROF we see and understand the struggle and challenge of software development teams with test data. These data issues have different appearances. It can be in finding or understanding your test data: which set of data should be used to cover your test cases properly? Or it can be getting in control of your test data: do you also have a “test data ghost” - sometimes your test data is there and a second later in can be gone. Or it can be about the challenge of getting compliant without losing the representativeness of data in your development stages. And then there are things called data or databases. Software development teams need to work with test data, but they generally don’t spend too much time on databases or data content in flat formats. Software teams rather spend time in delivering beautiful new code or validating the quality of the software code, as you should. That’s what you love, and that “database thing”, well that’s a need-to-have.

    We envision to solve this issue. We want to make sure your life is once again centred upon delivering or validating software code and quality. We take care that test data is easy accessible and readily available, so you can take care of software quality.

    We improve and innovate our test data software with the latest technologies every single day to support medium to large size organizations to ensure an even better fit with our DATPROF products. The DATPROF test data management suite is module based, so it enables you to select and deploy the modules that fits your needs in your digital transformation stage.

    DATPROF delivers products for:

    • Obfuscating, generating or masking databases and flat files;
    • Extracting or filtering specific data content with our patented subset algorithm;
    • Discovering, profiling and analysing solutions for understanding your test data,
    • Automating, integrating and orchestrating test data provisioning into your CI/CD pipelines and
    • Delivering a portal where test data can be refreshed within a few mouse clicks.
