Unified monitoring has reduced downtime and improves early detection of critical CPU issues
BMC AMI Ops offers excellent features including real-time monitoring, performance dashboard, and intelligent alerts, plus the automation capabilities we are using. It is easily accessible with visibility across multiple systems. I rely most heavily on the performance dashboard and real-time monitoring. The real-time monitoring and alerts keep us informed about problems immediately rather than waiting for users to report issues. BMC AMI Ops has impacted my organization very positively, primarily in terms of timing. Our manpower previously was required to investigate issues, which took considerable time just to identify the problem. Now we identify issues very early and solve them immediately. The positive outcomes include mainly reduced downtime and improved efficiency of our manpower. Earlier, when users reported high-priority issues, we had to spend extensive time investigating, resulting in system downtime. Now everything is much easier with BMC AMI Ops. Regarding BMC AMI Ops's AI capabilities, I believe its governance and security are very strong. We are currently handling almost eighty percent of our projects with it, and it is very stable with enterprise-level performance, including strong role-based access and monitoring capability. BMC AMI Ops is very reliable. The monitoring data is accurate, and the alerts are very specific and timely.

Real-time monitoring has improved incident response but still needs built-in history and prediction
A long-term performance database in SYSVIEW Performance Intelligence would be beneficial to see historical performance for the long term and observe trends. Currently, a program must be created to gather data, and it should be part of the product with a built-in database inside SYSVIEW Performance Intelligence so that a custom program to gather data and keep it somewhere is not necessary. Prediction capability is not available in SYSVIEW Performance Intelligence—the kind of machine learning intelligence desired, such as the ability to predict patterns or seasonality or month-end behavior. However, if there is a chance to use WatchTower, this ability might be gained.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"BMC AMI Ops has improved outcomes for my team, and it has definitely improved outcomes for the clients that we serve."
"MainView has enabled me, in the past, to solve production problems faster, or even avoid them preemptively with warnings."
"BMC AMI Ops positively impacted my organization during the evaluation phase, with the main benefit being improved visibility into the mainframe environment by providing a clear view of alerts and system status."
"BMC AMI Ops has positively impacted my organization in multiple ways, especially in automation, as we do not have to manually run or search for or run scripts."
"The integration of IMS commands is very useful, because you do not have to switch to another tool to problem solve solutions."
"BMC AMI Ops has impacted my organization very positively, primarily in terms of timing, with positive outcomes including reduced downtime and improved efficiency of our manpower."
"The automation capabilities have reduced the majority of the work that our team used to do manually, as manual processes consume a lot of time and are prone to human error, and when it comes to automation, we see the performance has been raised, clients are also satisfied with the performance, we do not have much downtime or any critical issues that are highlighted which impact the business, and automation has really changed and is a game changer for us."
"Batch smoothing our 4HRA and implementation of group capacity profiles has allowed us to run sub-capacity and lower our MLC."
"It is always well-maintained and it does everything we ask for it to do."
"I use most of the SMS space management extensively, but also the features that enable me to look at dumps and different dataset allocations to the system, and performance data from the queueing and delays."
"It provides much more info regarding the mainframe and interfaces, with ease of use (menus); has many more options available compared to the previous product."
"We were using SDS from IBM; we switched because SYSVIEW is a better product."
"Ability for system diagnostics"
"It is easy to see if anything is wrong. The queues on the system are fast, and it is very intuitive to locate something."
"When we changed to JES3, the programmers didn't have to know anything. The product provided the same interface with the same look and feel."
"This does pretty much the same thing that MainView does at a cheaper cost."

Cons

"The alerting system could be improved."
"An expansion for distributed systems would be great, but probably not workable."
"Regarding needed improvements, by default, when we open a viewpoint, we don't see the jobs in a linear way."
"More visualisation and support for mobile devices would be good."
"I would like to see more AI in BMC AMI Ops, such as an AI feature that lets you keep track of storage in some way, perhaps some kind of automatic disk cleanup."
"My experience with BMC AMI Ops was limited, but during this evaluation, I believe it could be improved by making some features easier for new users to understand, probably with better guidance or more practical examples."
"BMC AMI Ops can be improved by offering a more modern user interface and better dashboard customization."
"The screen layout could be updated and be more modern looking. The product has a 1980’s interface and it seems no investment whatsoever has been made in this respect."
"Having spoken with the product owner, we discussed the interests of being able to identify the unit of work ID giving us the ability to correlate transactions that cross technologies."
"Perhaps the CPU usage: When SYSVIEW is accessed via VTAM, the CPU usage is higher than compared to when its accessed via TSO using exactly the same commands, e.g., Display active tasks."
"The documentation format could be better. I noticed with the last release that all of the manuals were bundled into one. It used to have a separate installation guide, user guide, etc."
"The creation of dashboards could be made much easier, such as the way it is done in BMCs MainView for example."
"Sometimes you think they should be a little bit faster to solve the issues, but it is also difficult sometimes to duplicate what the issue is."
"It confuses a lot of people because there are so many features, but when they see me bouncing around they say, "I didn't know it did that, I didn't know it did that." It takes a long time to find all the different features that are available."
"A long-term performance database in SYSVIEW Performance Intelligence would be beneficial to see historical performance for the long term and observe trends."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"If you already use other products from BMC, you might be able to get a package deal from BMC's sales department."
"Pricing is a little steep, but there are a lot of other functions that it brings together. It gives you one window to look through to get to a lot of different features. The more products you have from CA, the better pricing they have, the more you can get them doing more things for you."
