Efficient data integration reduces operational time and enhances metadata management
For the initial setup with AWS Glue, I find it easy to set up the data catalog and create Glue jobs using the visual editor or the visual code. Setting permission sets via IAM rules can be a bit tricky at the start, but we ensure Glue has access to AWS S3, Redshift, and other services. Once the role is configured, it runs smoothly. For advanced configurations, connecting to VPCs and setting up connections with JDBC sources takes more time compared to my cloud experience, but overall, for someone with cloud and ETL experience, the setup is manageable and well done.

A well-established product that meets all our specifications in terms of usability
In the initial stage when we went with Data Integrator Cloud Service it was primarily the nativity factor that was key for us. Having a single vendor supporting the entire suite of applications, and the ability to configure activities and direct integration with various other Oracle products, were the main attractive features within ODI. This is a well-established product that's good to have if you hold an Oracle suite of applications. It meets all our specifications in terms of usability.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"You do not need many frameworks to run Glue."
"For ETL, I feel the performance is excellent."
"We no longer had to worry much about infrastructure management because AWS Glue is serverless, and Amazon takes care of the underlying infrastructure."
"The AWS Glue Data Catalog provides metadata management and schema discovery. AWS Glue simplifies data transformation with automatic schema detection, incremental data updates, and integration with other AWS services."
"AWS Glue's best features are scalability and cloud-based features."
"AWS Glue is a stable and easy-to-use solution."
"The solution helps organizations gain flexibility in defining the structure of the data."
"AWS Glue's most valuable features include its transformation capabilities, which provide data quality and shape for processing in ML or AI models."
"Oracle integration cloud has got the adapters for all their products, which makes the integration a little faster and makes it easier to implement the integration quickly."
"The data is stored in the cloud, making it easy to download data simultaneously into multiple smaller servers, effectively downsizing the process."
"The solution is easy to manage and offers good integration. You can run all the tasks one by one which is really helpful, and pick the day and time to do so."
"This is a well-established product that's good to have if you hold an Oracle suite of applications."
"Oracle Data Integrator helps us build tables and data marts and allows us to schedule them daily, for nearly real-time data warehousing."
"The most valuable thing to me is its simplicity. A person with zero knowledge can also develop the integration without having extensive technology knowledgebase. They can also work on creating their own integration."
"Having a single vendor supporting the entire suite of applications."
"The solution is very stable and it's great once you get it working correctly."

Cons

"The process of entering environment variables in AWS Glue requires navigating to a different page, which could be streamlined."
"The point for improvement in AWS Glue would be the dynamic allocation of resources while utilizing Lambda functions."
"When there is a need to configure connections to different database sources in respect of the target, it would be good if it were easier to deal with roles."
"The technical support for this solution could be improved. In future, we would like to connect more services like Athena or Kinesis to help control more loads of data."
"The drawbacks associated with the product stem from the fact that, based on the data volume, it can become very costly."
"AWS Glue is more costly compared to other tools like Airflow."
"On occasion, the solution's dashboard reports that a project failed due to runtime but it actually succeeded."
"One area that could be improved is the ETL view. The drag-and-drop interface is not as user-friendly as some other ETL tools."
"This is an expensive solution compared to other products on the market."
"I've found technical support not very effective. They should work to improve their services."
"The pricing could be more competitive."
"It's lacking a lot of mapping features that Oracle OSB and SOA have. It needs to evolve a lot."
"I would like to see different cloud adapters or connectors in case of integration. When you have Oracle to Oracle, they are good. They have really good connectors, but if it is a different ERP, like Obsidian, that is where they are faced with problems in OIC."
"It can be made much easier for users. They should be allowed to easily monitor the data extraction and flow, allowing them to observe real-time data flow within the software, making the process straightforward."
"Licensing costs for this Oracle solution are expensive. ODI forms an integral part of the overall PaaS solution and becomes a kind of backbone for that particular service, which is painful because from a PaaS perspective, the licensing costs just shoot off the roof."
"The solution is expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"AWS Glue follows a pay-as-you-go model, wherein the cost of the data you use will be counted as a monthly bill."
"It is an expensive product. I rate its pricing a nine out of ten."
"The solution's pricing is based on DPUs so it is a good idea to optimize use or it can get expensive."
"It is not expensive. AWS Glue works on the serverless architecture. We get charged for the time the server is up. For our use case, we have to use it once in a day, and it is not expensive for us."
"AWS Glue is a paid service that doesn't come under the free trial of AWS."
"Its price is good. We pay as we go or based on the usage, which is a good thing for us because it is simple to forecast for the tool. It is good in terms of the financial planning of the company, and it is a good way to estimate the cost. It is also simple for our clients. In my opinion, it is one of the best tools in the market for ETL processes because of the fact that you pay as you use, which separates it from other big tools such as PowerCenter, Pentaho Data Integration, and Talend."
"I rate the product's pricing a five on a scale of one to ten, where one is a high price, and ten is a low price."
"The current cost is around forty to fifty thousand a month."
"The price is competitive compared to Boomi which is much higher."
