We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It's very simple to create a new version and do some more modeling based on your need for planning things like headcount, other expenses, and revenue, everything is configurable within Workday.""Reports are allowed to be edited for aesthetic purposes, which is lacking in a lot of other dashboard tools.""It helps develop a more unified work format throughout the company.""Automated reporting.""The integration with our payroll system to complete staff modeling during our budget and forecast processes.""Changes to corporate structure, account codes are updated in all versions including prior years, hence "one-version of truth" as claimed.""It's very stable.""The biggest feature is the source of truth for all of our budget and forecast versions."

"One of the things they added in the last two or three years is PODs, Portable Object Doclets. One of our clients said they wanted to use PODs. They're a good way to make some constructs modular and keep things in one place.""It's very feature-rich. You can create tables, you can create graphs, you can import pictures, and those features are also easy to use.""The integration with MS Office is an advantage, creating a better user experience.""The Windward solution was very fast to rollout, and it is proven.""It's easy to create templates and reports using Microsoft Word, so we don't have to learn something new to create a template. That makes it very user-friendly... they have integrated the product with Microsoft Word. People can easily start working on it without too much training.""The ultimate feature is the product it produces. The ROI around that saves hours and hours. It's probably about a hundred days per year. The time savings and the ability to turn it around quickly pleases our customers.""Windward helped automate reports which otherwise would have needed IT to create and maintain.""The design tool, with all of its features and sample output fidelity tests, and being able to work with JSON data and output PDF and HTML, were also both crucial."

Cons
"It's a Workday product; they could do a little bit better to integrate a pure-play integration with Workday, which really doesn't do that.""Adaptive Insights has a limit of 1,00,000 rows for HTML reports. It should be improved because we will have multiple dimensions that need to be populated to enhance the image.""Adaptive Insights could improve the data designer interface to make integrations easier to set up.""We tried Discovery and OfficeConnect at one point and found them too cumbersome, at the time.""Being able to drill down when using OfficeConnect needs work.""The integrations could be simpler. It takes quite a bit of internal and IT know-how to set up.""The product's configuration process could be faster.""Discovery (the data visualization module): Needs to catch up with BI leaders, such as MS and Tableau. E.g., sorting by amounts in column charts and page slicers to control all visuals."

"The tool does not support macOS documents.""It is software, so there are always times where things don't work. Most of the time issues happen when trying to move to a new version. There might be problems with reports that were created in an older version, so either we have to make a tweak to the templates or we report it to them and get them to make an adjustment to their software.""One thing that frustrated us a little bit is that we have to use the Office PDF generation, because the native PDF generation is always slightly different compared to the one in Office. The formatting is just a little bit off here and there... This means that we need to have Office installed on the server to be able to generate these documents via API.""I'm still working in Office 2016, and we have had some issues, but Windward is very quick to react when there is a problem. We are also going to switch over to Office 365 and that will solve a few of the problems.""They should add a document distribution solution on top of the document generation capability. It should allow us to send the generated document to a certain recipient (e.g. customer contact’s email address) based on a business-rules management system. That system would allow the end-user to manage a relationship between a document template and its recipient.""A lot of clients who want to use this don't have the technical background for the SQL portion of gathering the data. If Windward were to make a more user-friendly SQL extract front-end, that would help a lot of clients to leverage the application a lot more.""I have to deal with VERY long lists of properties contained in our XMLs and it would be nice if Windward offered a way to alphabetize this property list.""They're not a gigantic company, so they just don't have all the capital to do whatever they would want to do. That's the only reason I would hold back even that one point. I know that if I do ask for something, I'll get it. I just know that it will take some time."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "Everything is negotiable, but this solution is low cost compared to others."
  • "Licensing seems to be worth the cost considering the efficiency Adaptive brings."
  • "Prior to purchasing licenses, make sure you understand which users will only need planning and which users will need both planning and OfficeConnect."
  • "Ensure that you have the proper pricing plan in place."
  • "Adaptive Insights' pricing is reasonable."
  • "Pricing is in line with other cloud-based EPM tools. It is a subscription-based model based upon the number of users and site type if it's an admin or end-user type thing."
  • "Adaptive Insights' pricing is relative to its peer competitors. It's certainly competitive compared to a spreadsheet template that you build in Excel. It can be expensive if you need to have 100-500 budget holders giving input and building financial plans. However, in that case, it becomes an extremely good bargain. Compared to its competitors, it offers an excellent value."
  • "It's affordable."

  • "I can't advise anybody about pricing and licensing, but it was competitive. A lot of things we did look at were all volume-based, so it was a case of you buy a license to generate this many reports a year, and that's not something that I'm particularly interested in because it doesn't give you any idea - if we have future growth, or if we have a lean year - for budgeting reasons it's more difficult. With Windward it's a straight out license fee, whether we generate one page or we generate a million, it makes no difference."
  • "They are fair and flexible. They are willing to work with your current architecture to make sure you have the best deal."
  • "CapEx fits our requirements, OpEx is higher due to the 20% service and maintenance cost, where we normally pay 15%."
  • "It is absolutely worth the value. They have flexibility, depending on what you're looking for from a buying standpoint. The current pricing models are quite flexible, with the ability to use it on an as-needed basis, or to get a perpetual license that covers a customer that might have extensive needs. I think it's pretty good."
  • "For what you're getting, it's an extremely good value."
  • "The only problem with the pricing of Windward is the limitation on the number of reports generated. It is costly in that sense. If you want to increase, you have to pay more, based on the number of reports generated per day. It is not the same with Crystal Reports. With the latter, you buy a license at one point in time and that's it."
  • "From my experience in this field, the product is reasonably priced, at least with the RESTful engine implementation. It's definitely not a cheap option. People say, "That's a fair amount of money to pay for a document generation tool." At the same time, you do get good functionality and the support is good."
  • "Pricing is something I complain about. Production pricing is okay, but for a testing environment the pricing looks a bit high to me."
