Useful for DNS/DHCP management but needs a better GUI
The initial setup is a little difficult. I haven't ever built any good environment as-is. However, I have tried to develop some labs for my testing; and found that it was really difficult for me to spin up. Setting up everything correctly is the one thing. The deployment itself can be done in half an hour. That said, this is not going to be just one appliance, this is going to be a distributed environment, like hundreds of appliances all together work as a single unit, and that's how the solution is provided. I haven't done any cold deployments. That said, for my testing, I could do it by myself in my lab. Otherwise, to be frank, I don't know how many people would be needed to do a deployment in a well-deployed organization, a running organization. If you have to implement the solution, you're definitely going to be doing it as a shared effort with network security and everyone else.

Works well, helps to avoid mistakes, and supports bulk entries
It is pretty scalable. On Infoblox IPAM, we have a total of five segments of slash 16. It is a vast network. Apart from that, there are multiple domains. I support French companies, and they have multiple domains. That DNS is also a part of Infoblox for which we need to do the entries. It is used on a daily basis in operations. If we face any issues, such as the IP is not reachable, the first thing we'll check is whether it is resolving or not. If we consider nslookup, it will also go to DNS. So, it is used daily.

A stable and scalable tool meant for IP address management
I am unsure if SolarWinds IPAM is good for network management. I know that the tool can manage IP addresses. From any improvement perspective, SolarWinds IPAM should consider working on the area where the tool lacks, which is its network management capabilities. SolarWinds IPAM offers the functionalities it has promised to my company. There is nothing much that one can expect from a tool meant to manage IP addresses.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The DNS/DHCP side of the product is quite useful."
"Before IPAM (IP Address Management) came into the picture, every user had to depend on an Active Directory engineer to get an IP assigned. With Infoblox IPAM, there's automation or auto assignment of IP addresses which is a valuable feature. There's also the capability of storing many networks in one place through the solution. Infoblox IPAM solved the major issue of needing an Active Directory engineer to assign an IP."
"The features we found the most valuable were being able to handle DHCP scopes and handing out DHCP leases. We weren't doing some of the things that we can do, such as DNS query rate limiting. Our usage was pretty standard. We wanted to be able to track our IP addresses to create DNS entries and then create DHCP and manage DHCP scopes. We used the standard features the most."
"It provides us with flexibility."
"Infoblox IPAM provides visibility into what's on your network and helps fingerprint devices based on the OS, manufacturer, and other things along those lines."
"For me, the best feature of Infoblox IPAM is that you can use BloxOne DDI which means you can manage everything from the cloud and have security policies as well. I also like that Infoblox IPAM is plug-and-play."
"We can specify the availability of subnets when we create them."
"It helps to avoid manual mistakes and we can add the proper DNS if we add an Alias name to that. We are aware of the CNAME we need to use. By using Infoblox as a DNS, we can add the A and PTR records, which is helpful for the lookup as well as the reverse lookup."
"The graphical user interface is very user-friendly and simple to use. It is very simple to use if you have never used it before."
"I like the option to keep all of the available and used IPAM addresses in the central organization."
"SolarWinds IPAM is a simple and user-friendly tool."
"The initial setup is straightforward. It takes about half a day, and it can be done by one engineer."
"I would recommend this solution for all companies that have to deal with a lot of networks."
"Scalability-wise, I rate the solution a ten out of ten."
"The product is user-friendly and valuable."
"The most valuable feature of SolarWinds IPAM is its automated IP address management. Instead of working with Excel sheets, it's automated and saves a lot of time and effort. Additionally, it is adaptable, IT managers enjoy it, and it is high quality."
"Its setup is simple. Its interface is simple. It's very easy to manage."

Cons

"It's an older product. The GUI and everything is a little outdated."
"Infoblox IPAM could improve some of the features. The market is demanding for some features that are not there, but there is always a reason why it's not there. At the moment, the solution is rather complete for what it's used for. It can always extend to solve some other issues that are linked to it, but the solution itself is complete."
"An area for improvement is IPAM's smart folders, which can be slow to access and would benefit from a search feature."
"When we use the forwarders or when we're trying to connect with the internet, sometimes there are issues and the publishing time is longer."
"The scope of our use of this solution is limited to the DDI IPAM solution for Infoblox. This solution could be improved by offering multiple integrations with IPAM which could already exist but we aren't aware of them."
"The solution is not easy to use; the GUI and CLI are challenging to use, limiting end-user capability. We can't use Linux terminal features with Infoblox, as it struggles to detect and troubleshoot problems. We generally use troubleshooting tools like tcpdump in our network security area and we can use that in Infoblox with limited features."
"CLI needs to be user-friendly. There should be an option to commit changes."
"It is challenging to find training tutorials online."
"Their biggest problem is with the corporate side of the house as far as getting a support response or getting a sales team response isn't always as efficient as it should be and as it used to be."
"The product needs to improve its support. The response time is long and not very helpful."
"Sometimes we have to wait for screens to load, so faster operations would be better."
"SolarWinds IPAM offers premium support, but the customer has to pay more money, and then they will have minimal response times."
"From any improvement perspective, SolarWinds IPAM should consider working on the area where the tool lacks, which is its network management capabilities."
"I would like more updates."
"Some processes are a little bit bumpy. The solution needs a design refresh."
"They should provide more details on the full stack feature. It needs to be integrated with the hypervisor."
"The installation and storage could be improved."

Pricing and Cost Advice

Information not available
"The price of the solution is reasonable compared to competitors, such as Akamai."
"The licensing cost for Infoblox IPAM depends on your usage and also depends on your term plans, for example, you may want it for three months, six months, or only for seven days. I don't remember the exact licensing cost, but it depends on your organization's structure and how many networks you are going to need."
"We purchase yearly licenses, and I don't know the exact price as I'm not involved in the finance or sales departments. Infoblox is one of the more expensive products in the DDI environment, so I would say that for organizations looking to combine DNS, DSTP, and IP management with security features, the solution is worth it. However, for organizations only looking for an IP management tool, for example, many more affordable options are available."
"They were expensive. They were known to be expensive. In general, they used to at least try to encourage you to upgrade to hardware every three years. Infoblox had a reputation as being one of the better solutions but also one of the more expensive solutions, whereas VitalQ was definitely a much more affordable solution. With Infoblox, anytime you replace hardware, there would also be the cost of the hardware upgrade. So, besides the software licensing fee, there were also hardware maintenance and hardware upgrade fees. I would rate it a 3 out of 10 in terms of pricing."
"The cost depends on the scale at which we're deploying it. It's an annual subscription that ranges between $1,000 and $2,000."
"Infoblox IPAM is a very expensive solution and it should improve. The solution is subscription-based, and the payments can be monthly or yearly. There are additional costs for more features, and the exact cost depends on the features you're using."
"I rate Infoblox IPAM’s pricing a seven out of ten, since their price is up there."
"Infoblox IPAM is a licensed product, and my company pays for it yearly. It depends on the licensing model you choose because right now, the solution can also be subscription-based, specifically the cloud version, but the traditional licensing model for it is one that's paid yearly. The cost would depend on the organization. I know how much my company pays for Infoblox IPAM, but I won't disclose that information. If your company has $10,000,000 or $20,000,000, for example, and you need stability, then I'd say the solution is worth it. If your company is a startup, then the solution may not be worth it, but it would still depend on the ability of your company because Infoblox IPAM is one of the costlier solutions in the market."
"The price of SolarWinds IPAM is good. After the second year, you have to pay additional for maintenance, because the first year is included with the license maintenance and support. It's from the second year on, you have to pay about 20% of the list price for maintenance and support."
"It's on the costlier side. It's expensive."
"The product is costly."
"On a scale of one to five, where one is high and five is good, I would rate this solution as a four."
"I would rate the product's pricing a six out of ten."
