Network segmentation is important as it can limit the impact of a virus outbreak.

Network segmentation only allows an authorized user to access certain applications, data and/or servers ... like physical access control restricting access to certain doors.

So it limits the ability of hackers to wander through a network and search for data and/or other ways into the network.

The original firewalls installed on IT networks were like the walls around a castle .. once you were through the gate, you had access to the entire castle ... which obviously is not true security.
