The application response time of the solution can be improved.

It's for a very specific use case. It's not for everything. Although the solution is very powerful, it doesn't apply to all enterprises. There is only one feature that needs to be improved. In the case of a High Availability event, if we lose the primary Steelhead, all the connections need to be restarted. If we lose the primary Steelhead that handles the optimization, the secondary Steelhead cannot handle the same High Availability. Some applications will restart automatically, but for some other applications, like STP, the users need to start a new session. If we load a primary firewall, the secondary firewall usually handles all the active connections, but in Riverbed, this isn't the case. We lose all the active connections at the moment of failure.

We would like the solution to be less expensive. If the solution was more secure, that would be ideal. The product should offer more integration capabilities.

They should include a network switch in a future release.

Application response time and network performance could be improved. Allot, an Israel-based organization, is offering DDoS attack prevention, not mitigation but prevention; threat response. If Riverbed would offer DDoS or IPS-type stuff, that would be great. Because we are deploying Riverbed in inline mode, we can easily take advantage of these kinds of features.

The solution is expensive and the service contacts are costly too. The cost of the device makes the value proposition borderline acceptable for us. The service contract fees we pay is approximately $30,000 annually.

The cost of the product is too high. We would like it to be lower. We pay a yearly licensing fee.

I have more than ten years of experience working at a comms service provider with more than 10,000 employees.  With bandwidth prices getting cheaper, is a WAN optimization solution still relevant and worth the investment? Thanks! I appreciate the help.

I think proper capacity planning to meet the future WAN throughput and customers requirements, mixed with good service optimisation should work well. Most times is a matter of financial planning and return of investment ratio. Your IT analysts should be able to provide data which will be useful for your management team. Your financial director(s) should check the running costs in detail, collaborating with consultants until proper solution. This is broad business specific topic and universal answer will not help much, I am afraid.

A WAN optimization solution will always be relevant, just as web browser proxies will always be relevant, despite chatter in the early 2000s that broadband made them obsolete. They make both the WAN and the LAN more efficient as more complex website and applications require more prodigious and redundant bits and pieces to operate smoothly. One cannot expect your software solutions provider to extensively tweak to your WAN topology. Like any technology, WAN optimizations are getting cheaper and more efficient. Free linux WAN optimizers can run on lower-end hardware in surplus in many offices. At the very least, they may be used for prototyping. Then, budget permitting, scaling up the ladder to commercial solutions may be considered, many by hte same network hardware vendors you're already fmailier with.
