What have been your experiences with Tableau? Do you agree with Gartner's 2014 report?
In Gartner’s 2014 Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platform, Tableau Software moved up significantly to become the top-ranked vendor on the Ability to Execute axis. Do you agree?

I agree with Mike L. Tableau seems to be a very good end user tool - I am not sure about that because I never used it. But the competitors are raising their solutions (like MicroStrategy Desktop - a free discover end user tool, Cognos and SAS). These other tools seems to be a very robust solutions that can support Enterprise BI applications.

This ranking makes sense to me from an operational perspective as the tool has a semantic layer that can be configured and rolled out to end users via a web framework thereby providing the self service framework that I was looking for. The visualisation capabilities although not perfect are amongst the best I have seen. My experience so far is at a fairly basic level and so we have not encountered any major limitations with the software so far. All technologies have limitations and can be improved but I do think that tableau has now matured enough to earn the gartner ranking. I come from a business objects background and have been a great supporter of the technology since 1997 , and so it is from this perspective that I make this judgement.
Tableau is also available as a cloud based subscription service which is an important factor for my organisation.

Our users love Tableau and the number of Tableau users keeps growing. For most users Tableau is not the primary BI tool, it supplements the corporate standard which is MicroStrategy. But there are some smaller teams that adopted Tableau as their BI tool of choice.
I’m not in a position to comment on the Gartner Magic Quadrant because their Ability to Execute ranking is based on market data that I don’t have access to. But anecdotally, it seems that our experience with Tableau is typical, and it is gaining traction in many organizations.

I hope that this answers your question.
Yea, I agree. Tableau is a complex BI solution in the best way possibilities/cost points of views.
I agree with the point that Tableau is a top visualization data tool.
