For monitoring purposes, we normally use flash access storage exclusively. We utilize a hybrid system because we need performance, combining NL-SAS for the volume and SAS flash to use as a fast cache system that provides more IOPS. We normally implement RAID 10, which we prefer over RAID 6's n plus 2 combinations. We utilize it for data redundancy, even with write intensity on. Regarding the unified storage architecture for NetApp FAS Series, we normally opt for exclusivity unless budget constraints exist. Our IOPS are very high, reaching somewhere about 50k to 150k or 1.150k. The high performance ensures minimal latency. An advantage we've seen with NetApp FAS Series is that snapshots provide very rapid backup and fast recovery. We basically use snapshots for data protection as first-level protection, with deduplication between the two storages serving as second-level protection.

A stable unified storage system that enables quick access to data
The main thing Oracle can improve is the cost. It would be better if Oracle opened up the system to enable integration with other vendors. Whether it's the database, application server, or storage appliance, they should make it easy to integrate them. They need to open up more to ensure that it can work in any environment and IT ecosystem.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I like that the NetApp FAS Series can use both SAN and NAS at the same time, and that's what most customers are looking for."
"It was very straightforward with OpenStack, very well-documented, and supported."
"The best feature is its ONTAP product line for Ransomware protection. It also has features for file storage and block storage. The solution is stable. We've had no issues with it. The tool is scalable and meets our requirements. The technical support and the supporting partner are great. The initial setup is straightforward. It is very easy to maintain the product. The feature set is excellent. I recommend the solution."
"The most valuable feature of the NetApp FAS Series is its stability."
"The biggest advantage that makes NetApp FAS Series better is that we can use RAID technology on the storage."
"At the end of the day, we have reduced the time to market for all of our products, especially when we need to support our clients with new requirements."
"It's enabled us to allow admins across the IT organization to more easily manage their own subset of data within our organization."
"The input and output per second performance are satisfactory."
"Oracle Sun ZFS Storage Appliance is a very stable and durable product that's very strong and mature."
"I like its storage capacity, quick access to the data, speed, and overall storage management."
"Very good analytics Very easy to configure."

Cons

"There is no NetApp infrastructure set up here in Greece."
"Unify all backup software on the single tool to simplify the administration."
"As I see it, there could be more interfaces, more cache, etc., but those challenges are solved by just getting some other model."
"When it comes to deployment we had our share of issues. Some of these issues are to blame on the vendor's lack of experience with the new models and ONTAP versions, but sometimes the systems themselves were faulty."
"Between NetApp and HP, we chose HP because the NetApp support is not very good."
"I have not given the FAS a perfect rating because the All Flash Array is probably going to beat it down, in terms of performance."
"The solution can improve on the replication features."
"Sometimes there are bugs with firmware upgrades."
"The main thing Oracle can improve is the cost. It would be better if Oracle opened up the system to enable integration with other vendors. Whether it's the database, application server, or storage appliance, they should make it easy to integrate them. They need to open up more to ensure that it can work in any environment and IT ecosystem."
"Uptime. We had some crashes here and there."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"I don't recall the price, but in general, pricing can always be better."
"The pricing of NetApp FAS Series is not cheap, but in comparison to other vendors, NetApp FAS Series is affordable because they also have deduplication, compression, and inline compression. They focus on storage only, which is really good; it works."
"Most storage vendors also have software, or licensing bundles, which may offer the required licenses considerably cheaper, but do also maybe offer licenses, which are not needed."
"In general, I find NetApp to be very expensive. That's the main issue I have with them. So it's a drawback in terms of pricing."
"We have considered upgrading to an All-Flash solution but when we evaluated the cost-benefit we discovered that we don't have enough money to invest in it. To maintain the same technology with All-Flash would be too expensive for us."
"The NetApp FAS series price is very competitive compared to other solutions on the market it is a good choice."
"The tool is expensive."
"The solution is more expensive than other vendors."
"The price could be better. We have many competing products now like Huawei and Dell EMC, and these are slightly cheaper."
