Has improved investigative workflows with interactive dashboards and simplified data correlation
The data analytics cloud component focuses on real-time analytics, which is very impressive. The SIEM collects and correlates logs data from different sources and can integrate with ServiceNow, hardware asset management, and software asset management. The security orchestration, automation, and response (SOAR) is another valuable feature. The security data platform serves as the foundation of Devo. Regarding advanced query capabilities, Devo offers several models including query logs, visual query builder, language integrated query, and SQL, with SQL being the most frequently used querying data capability. The single pane of glass that Devo offers is the SOC. The tools in Devo's active ports are for investigating, not just viewing data. They are more interactive than other market solutions. The drill-down reports capabilities allow analysts to click on any element in a widget. When they see a spike in a line chart for a failed login, which could be a true or false attempt, they can click that spike, and a table widget on the same active board instantly populates with raw logs of data for those specific failed logins. This is particularly important for enterprise companies with numerous endpoints and users. The dynamic filtering of inputs significantly reduces the time cybersecurity analysts spend trying to figure out failed logins and identifying false positives.

Valuable log segregation aids in auditing, but Windows integration needs enhancement
Our primary use case for Kiwi Syslog is for gathering logs necessary for auditing purposes I appreciate that with Kiwi Syslog, we can segregate the logs based on the display, such as using different colors and fonts, which helps greatly in identifying logs by their severity. This feature is…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"The ROI has been great as we could launch it in a few months instead of a couple of years, and when you put all the costs together, it is less to have done it than with the open source approach."
"Those 400 days of hot data mean that people can look for trends and at what happened in the past. And they can not only do so from a security point of view, but even for operational use cases. In the past, our operational norm was to keep live data for only 30 days. Our users were constantly asking us for at least 90 days, and we really couldn't even do that. That's one reason that having 400 days of live data is pretty huge. As our users start to use it and adopt this system, we expect people to be able to do those long-term analytics."
"We can ingest virtually any log source, which is much better than our previous solution."
"The most valuable feature is that it has native MSSP capabilities and maintains perfect data separation. It does all of that in a very easy-to-manage cloud-based solution."
"The real-time analytics of security-related data are super. There are a lot of data feeds going into it and it's very quick at pulling up and correlating the data and showing you what's going on in your infrastructure. It's fast. The way that their architecture and technology works, they've really focused on the speed of query results and making sure that we can do what we need to do quickly. Devo is pulling back information in a fast fashion, based on real-time events."
"One of the biggest features of the UI is that you see the actual code of what you're doing in the graphical user interface, in a little window on the side. Whatever you're doing, you see the code, what's happening. And you can really quickly switch between using the GUI and using the code. That's really useful."
"One of the immediate improvements that come to mind is the amount of hot, searchable data, as in the SIEM we had before we were only able to search back 90 days of hot, searchable data, whereas here we have 400 days worth, which has definitely improved our threat hunting capabilities."
"The alerting is much better than I anticipated. We don't get as many alerts as I thought we would, but that nobody's fault, it's just the way it is."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is the alerting based on the security logs."
"The most valuable feature of SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server is its performance and management. Additionally, the solution integrates well."
"I definitely recommend this solution."
"Simplicity is the most valuable feature."
"I appreciate that with Kiwi Syslog, we can segregate the logs based on the display, such as using different colors and fonts, which helps greatly in identifying logs by their severity."
"Overall, I rate SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server ten out of ten."
"If anyone needs log management, we recommend SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server."
"The most valuable features of SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server include its ability to provide network mapping and deliver information to my customers about their networks through various methods."

Cons

"The Activeboards feature is not as mature regarding the look and feel. Its functionality is mature, but the look and feel is not there. For example, if you have some data sets and are trying to get some graphics, you cannot change anything. There's just one format for the graphics. You cannot change the size of the font, the font itself, etc."
"One major area for improvement for Devo... is to provide more capabilities around pre-built monitoring. They're working on integrations with different types of systems, but that integration needs to go beyond just onboarding to the platform. It needs to include applications, out-of-the-box, that immediately help people to start monitoring their systems. Such applications would include dashboards and alerts, and then people could customize them for their own needs so that they aren't starting from a blank slate."
"There's always room to reduce the learning curve over how to deal with events and machine data."
"Their documentation could be better. They are growing quickly and need to have someone focused on tech writing to ensure that all the different updates, how to use them, and all the new features and functionality are properly documented."
"We only use the core functionality and one of the reasons for this is that their security operation center needs improvement."
"Some third-parties don't have specific API connectors built, so we had to work with Devo to get the logs and parse the data using custom parsers, rather than an out-of-the-box solution."
"Some basic reporting mechanisms have room for improvement."
"There is room for improvement in the ability to parse different log types. I would go as far as to say the product is deficient in its ability to parse multiple, different log types, including logs from major vendors that are supported by competitors. Additionally, the time that it takes to turn around a supported parser for customers and common log source types, which are generally accepted standards in the industry, is not acceptable. This has impacted customer onboarding and customer relationships for us on multiple fronts."
"SolarWinds pricing is perceived as very high in the market, which can be a barrier for many customers."
"I would like to see a more user-friendly and customizable dashboard."
"Technical support could definitely be better."
"I would like to see a more user-friendly and customizable dashboard."
"The Windows log forwarder is not functioning properly."
"SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server could improve by reducing the price."
"The Windows log forwarder is not functioning properly. This is a significant concern, as it led to losing a deal due to the inability to provide Windows logs effectively."
"There is a need for an on-premises solution, which could lead to easier sales in larger markets."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have an OEM agreement with Devo. It is very similar to the standard licensing agreement because we are charged in the same way as any other customer, e.g., we use the backroom."
"Be cautious of metadata inclusion for log types in pricing, as there are some "gotchas" with that."
"It's very competitive. That was also a primary draw for us. Some of the licensing models with solutions like Splunk and Sentinel were attractive upfront, but there were so many micro-charges and services we would've had to add on to make them what we wanted. We had to include things like SOAR and extended capabilities, whereas all those capabilities are completely included with the Devo platform. I haven't seen any additional fee."
"Our licensing fees are billed annually and per terabyte."
"Pricing is based on the number of gigabytes of ingestion by volume, and it's on a 30-day average. If you go over one day, that's not a big deal as long as the average is what you expected it to be."
"Devo is definitely cheaper than Splunk. There's no doubt about that. The value from Devo is good. It's definitely more valuable to me than QRadar or LogRhythm or any of the old, traditional SIEMs."
"Devo was very cost-competitive... Devo did come with that 400 days of hot data, and that was not the case with other products."
"I rate the pricing a four on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"The price of SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server could improve."
"We subscribe and pay directly on the website."
