Advanced threat hunting has improved SOC visibility and now supports faster incident response
Devo can improve in how its connectors enhance integration with third-party tools. Devo's architecture works by having you deploy a relay server in the data center of the client side and Devo SIEM is basically on the AWS cloud. There are specific ports which are enabled on the relay server, which are 514 and 13000, 13151, 152. However, when we talk about databases and custom integrations, there are not default ports in the relay server. No default ports are defined. For JDBC drivers, the port number is 1433, but it is not in the relay server. You have to add it manually. For Oracle RDBMS, the port is 1521, and it is also not there by default. I would appreciate more third-party integrations including Fortinet and others. Machine learning models can also be improved. Playbooks in the SOAR can also be improved. Regarding playbooks for automation, we utilize playbooks for automation in SOAR for automated IOC blocking on a firewall, on a web application firewall, on DNS security, etc. The only option for us to run the playbook is to schedule the job for it. However, if I want to manually run the playbook, there is no option for doing so. This needs improvement.

Valuable log segregation aids in auditing, but Windows integration needs enhancement
Our primary use case for Kiwi Syslog is for gathering logs necessary for auditing purposes I appreciate that with Kiwi Syslog, we can segregate the logs based on the display, such as using different colors and fonts, which helps greatly in identifying logs by their severity. This feature is…

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"One of the immediate improvements that come to mind is the amount of hot, searchable data, as in the SIEM we had before we were only able to search back 90 days of hot, searchable data, whereas here we have 400 days worth, which has definitely improved our threat hunting capabilities."
"Having one integrated tool helped us by removing the multiple teams, multiple pieces of equipment, and multiple software solutions from the equation."
"But from a SaaS standpoint, if not best-in-breed, Devo is certainly in the top-two or top-three."
"The thing that Devo does better than other solutions is to give me the ability to write queries that look at multiple data sources and run fast. Most SIEMs don't do that. And I can do that by creating entity-based queries. Let's say I have a table which has Okta, a table which has G Suite, a table which has endpoint telemetry, and I have a table which has DNS telemetry. I can write a query that says, 'Join all these things together on IP, and where the IP matches in all these tables, return to me that subset of data, within these time windows.' I can break it down that way."
"Even if it's a relatively technical tool or platform, it's very intuitive and graphical. It's very appealing in terms of the user interface. The UI has a graphically interface with the raw data in a table. The table can be as big as you want it, depending on your use case. You can easily get a report combining your data, along with calculations and graphical dashboards. You don't need a lot of training, because the UI is relatively very intuitive."
"Devo's speed and performance allows us to query in real-time and keep up with what is actually happening on the network, then respond effectively to events."
"It centralizes security management within a business, functioning as a core system for a SOC."
"Devo helps us to unlock the full power of our data because they have more than 450 parsers, which means that we can ingest pretty much any type of log data."
"The most valuable feature of this solution is the alerting based on the security logs."
"The most valuable feature of SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server is its performance and management. Additionally, the solution integrates well."
"If anyone needs log management, we recommend SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server."
"Simplicity is the most valuable feature."
"The best thing about Kiwi Syslog is that it filters logs into different levels."
"The most valuable features of SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server include its ability to provide network mapping and deliver information to my customers about their networks through various methods."
"I definitely recommend this solution."
"I appreciate that with Kiwi Syslog, we can segregate the logs based on the display, such as using different colors and fonts, which helps greatly in identifying logs by their severity."

Cons

"We only use the core functionality and one of the reasons for this is that their security operation center needs improvement."
"The Activeboards feature is not as mature regarding the look and feel. Its functionality is mature, but the look and feel is not there. For example, if you have some data sets and are trying to get some graphics, you cannot change anything. There's just one format for the graphics. You cannot change the size of the font, the font itself, etc."
"Devo has a lot of cloud connectors, but they need to do a little bit of work there."
"Some of the documentation could be improved a little bit. A lot of times it doesn't go as deep into some of the critical issues you might run into. They've been really good to shore us up with support, but some of the documentation could be a little bit better."
"Both response time and support quality need attention."
"Some third-parties don't have specific API connectors built, so we had to work with Devo to get the logs and parse the data using custom parsers, rather than an out-of-the-box solution."
"The biggest area with room for improvement in Devo is the Security Operations module that just isn't there yet. That goes back to building out how they're going to do content and larger correlation and aggregation of data across multiple things, as well as natively ingesting CTI to create rule sets."
"It's stable but it's not extremely stable."
"The Windows log forwarder is not functioning properly."
"The Windows log forwarder is not functioning properly. This is a significant concern, as it led to losing a deal due to the inability to provide Windows logs effectively."
"There is a need for an on-premises solution, which could lead to easier sales in larger markets."
"Technical support could definitely be better."
"SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server could improve by reducing the price."
"I would like to see a more user-friendly and customizable dashboard."
"SolarWinds pricing is perceived as very high in the market, which can be a barrier for many customers."
"I would like to have email notifications for emergency logs."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"We have an OEM agreement with Devo. It is very similar to the standard licensing agreement because we are charged in the same way as any other customer, e.g., we use the backroom."
"Be cautious of metadata inclusion for log types in pricing, as there are some "gotchas" with that."
"I'm not involved in the financial aspect, but I think the licensing costs are similar to other solutions. If all the solutions have a similar cost, Devo provides more for the money."
"Devo is definitely cheaper than Splunk. There's no doubt about that. The value from Devo is good. It's definitely more valuable to me than QRadar or LogRhythm or any of the old, traditional SIEMs."
"It's a per gigabyte cost for ingestion of data. For every gigabyte that you ingest, it's whatever you negotiated your price for. Compared to other contracts that we've had for cloud providers, it's significantly less."
"It's very competitive. That was also a primary draw for us. Some of the licensing models with solutions like Splunk and Sentinel were attractive upfront, but there were so many micro-charges and services we would've had to add on to make them what we wanted. We had to include things like SOAR and extended capabilities, whereas all those capabilities are completely included with the Devo platform. I haven't seen any additional fee."
"Our licensing fees are billed annually and per terabyte."
"I rate the pricing a four on a scale of one to ten, where one is cheap, and ten is expensive."
"The price of SolarWinds Kiwi Syslog Server could improve."
"We subscribe and pay directly on the website."
