Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups.""We've found the product to be stable.""The solution integrates well with Unix, Windows, Hyper-V and VM.""The solution is very stable.""I like Dell EMC Avamar's compression of data.""We are talking about a complete end-to-end solution which comes with its own hardware storage to back up the data on tape-less.""It's a good solution.""The product has a proven track record of good backups without much of a failure ratio. It also has a good backup in terms of the compression ratio."

"IBM Spectrum Protect offers stable software and products.""The archiving feature is the most valuable aspect of the solution.""Support of the IBM X platform and the backup data replication to DR are the most valuable features.""The interface is easy to use.""It's a very stable product, and we've never had any downtime with it.""The backup of Sybase databases is the most valuable feature in the existing environment. They have got the most documentation out there on the internet for its software protection. The documentation is excellent, and there are a lot of blogs, websites. Because it's still one of the oldest products out there for data protection, there are also lots of people who have a lot of experience in using this solution.""The most valuable feature of this solution is the centralized enterprise backup.""I've had no problems with the stability of this solution."

Cons
"The solution could improve by having better integration and more flexibility.""The interface has room for improvement. It's not ideal right now.""It would be better if we could integrate easily with other platforms.""It would be helpful if the product offered more integration potential.""The reporting should be improved, as we currently have to use another tool for that purpose.""Technical support should be more knowledgeable.""The solution should improve its tape-connectivity features.""Some integrations are not in place, such as the email alerts, which are not compatible with Office 365 SMTP gateway."

"When it comes to virtualization in IBM it's not perfect.""They took some of the funding off of it for a while. Therefore, instead of being a market leader, they took their position for granted. Then some competitors developed new bells and whistles that they advertise, and due to that lag a few years ago, there are not the resources to explain the differences.""The initial setup is complex.""It can be improved for large file systems with many files. Spectrum Protect can restore large files very well, but if you're restoring millions of little files, it is not as great. At one point, we tried to implement the VMware module with it, and it was awful and terrible. I don't know if that has improved. If it hasn't, this would be one big improvement.""The licensing isn't very clear. They should work to simply or clarify the cost structure.""The interface could be more user-friendly.""They do not have a unified GUI, they only work on CLI and operations center, which is really complicated for the installation and configuration.""It would be helpful if the solution included some sort of ransomware protection."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "It was approximately $70-80,000 when it was under support, but right now EMC has not been supporting this product for two years."
  • "Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
  • "When it comes to competition the price is not what is important, it's not the problem."
  • "The price of this product should be lower."
  • "It was very expensive before, but after integrating it with Dell EMC Avamar Data Protection suite licensing, we are getting better discounts."
  • "The cost of the solution is very expensive."
  • "Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
  • "Its licensing is weird. It is not just the licenses; we also purchase hardware. With most software products, such as Veeam, Commvault, and Data Protector, there is no hardware purchase at the same time. Because Avamar and Data Domain are tied together, they have an integrated pipe. You can separate them, but basically, they're designed to work as a couple. Because the Data Domain backend is designed to do dedupe and compression, we get 60:1. When you count it, you count it as a straight compression, but of course, that's with dedupe and some other stuff. You have to buy the hardware, the licensing, and the software at the same time. So, it's not just software."

  • "The licensing fees are between $8,000 and $10,000 per year."
  • "IBM provides an open license policy, which is more like a gentlemen's agreement."
  • "One can go with either a PVU licensing model or a capacity based licensing model. Either solution does not block the usage, if over used."
  • "It is fairly reasonable as compared to other solutions in the market."
  • "We have capacity licensing. We use the front end. The capacity licensing is pretty okay on the licensing price. I used to use the old PVU-based licensing in the early environment, but now we use capacity-based licensing."
  • "It is really expensive. Its price is not good for Latin America. Its price is good for the United States or Europe."
  • "It is expensive."
  • "The solution is expensive."
