Reliable with good backups but has occasional failures
I use Dell Avamar primarily for backup and recovery The most valuable feature for me is the backup functionality. It gives large enterprises the comfort of knowing their workloads are being backed up. There are instances where backups fail on certain applications, which is an area that could be…

Speedy and easy setup but it needs to mature
One way this solution could be improved is if they could come up with better options to migrate. As for what could be included in the next release, we have shared a couple of points with them. First, the account should be more in balance and coordinated with us. They already communicated to our project management team that they are going to implement some of these features. I would definitely recommend this solution. But as time goes on and new features are getting added the product will be more comprehensive.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I found the most valuable features of Dell Avamar are the user-friendly interface and ease to use. Our clients have administrated this software and there is no additional training required."
"Source based deduplication is the most attractive feature as it drastically reduces the backup window."
"The most valuable feature of Avamar would have to be the way it works over needing very little bandwidth to move data across a WAN or LAN."
"The stability of Dell EMC Avamar is very good."
"It is one of the best solutions for backing up Oracle and other servers."
"I have found the product to be scalable."
"It's simple to configure."
"Dell EMC Avamar is very good with endpoint backups."
"The speed and the ease of the initial setup are both good. It is not complex."
"One of the features I find most valuable, is the good technical support."

Cons

"The solution, in the future, should offer support for mobile."
"Desktop-laptop backups and backup over the WAN needs lot of improvisation. For DTLT there must be a provision to push agents from the management console."
"The interface has room for improvement. It's not ideal right now."
"The bare-metal restores could be improved."
"The UI is not easy to use. There are other products such as Veeam that are easy to use for the end-user which is why they are moving away from Avamar or Networker."
"The client caches and deduplication system have a few problems."
"Backup image browse times should be faster."
"A benefit would be support for either Azure Cool Storage or AWS Glacier."
"The interface and documentation need to improve."
"The product has to be more mature, like to be another six to eight months on the market. A lot of maturity needs to be incorporated."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Its price should be reduced. It would be good if you could pay as per usage, and there is a subscription model like VMware. There should be some flexibility because sometimes, the customer only uses the backup for one month or three months. Currently, I have to pay whether I use it or not. Its licensing should be flexible and based on consumption."
"The solution is expensive."
"Licensing was generally on a per VM or terabyte basis. They changed their licensing model a couple of times and turned it into socket-based licensing, which is an improvement in their licensing model."
"It's an expensive tool"
"Dell Avamar is expensive."
"The solution is not expensive for the value one gets."
"This is a fairly expensive solution. It cost approximately 21,000 each year."
"Dell Avamar is free when we deploy the data protection. When we order data protection, this software is included in the hardware."
