Quotes From Members
We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use.
Here are some excerpts of what they said:
Pros
"It enables us to provide more solution options for our clients, with the reassurance that, when implemented, they will be efficient and stable.""StarWind Virtual SAN can improve an organization's storage infrastructure by providing high availability, scalability, cost-effectiveness, performance, and ease of use.""As the client had acquired another company some distance away, they were concerned about having a single SAN in one location or the other. StarWind vSAN allowed us to keep a copy of the data local to each site without asking the client to pay for two SANs in addition to the two new servers they needed.""The solution offers easy one-click PowerShell scripts that are ready to run.""The top-notch support before, during, and after deployments are better than any other vendor I have come across.""The ability to choose our own hardware and our own vendors for this was hugely beneficial, as we had pre-existing relationships with vendors we wanted to maintain.""Having the ability to migrate machines live in our environment was made possible by this software.""Virtual SAN runs on iSCSI, which is free and easy to configure. It's easy to manage from StarWind's GUI console, and it only required a few extra switch ports."

"It allows data to be available from two DataCore servers.""Storage is always available.""During the maintenance periods, on any part of the storage or VMware migration, we have had no downtime.""The most valuable feature for us is that we can adjust the size of the storage very easily, without stopping production.""Our central storage has very high availability. DataCore SANsymphony ensures high business continuity.""Continuous data protection (CDP), can be used to "protect" again ransomware by recording all write on disk in a log. You can recover your data with incredible time granularity.""I'd have to say that the biggest improvement gained by using SANsymphony has to be the performance of the product.""The most useful feature of SANsymphony is that it's able to manage any brand of block storage."

More DataCore SANsymphony Pros →

"The consolidation of the management in one control point is the most valuable. The whole infrastructure management is consolidated in just one console point. The documentation is also pretty good.""The size of the hardware is what we need because it is very good for small configurations.""Both the scalability and stability of this solution are excellent.""It is stable and scalable.""I like that you can add other types of services.""The most useful feature is the solution's automation in terms of how we are able to spin up a certain workload in real-time when we are doing R&D."

Cons
"Initially, when we first started, the sync was horrible.""New versions of this solution should be tested more thoroughly before the release as we had a few problems with one version due to a bug.""I had issues locating the documentation that applied to my version of StarWind vSAN.""While it is possible to implement disk encryption in StarWind using Windows Bitlocker, such a solution can be a little tricky to manage.""It would be great if it provided thin provisioned virtual disks.""For someone entering the IT sector with little knowledge of storage, iSCSI, and virtual disks, they might not find the GUI immediately obvious.""While StarWind.com excels in numerous areas, there are a couple of notable functionalities that it currently lacks. One of these is duplication, which could be an invaluable feature for data redundancy and backup purposes. The ability to duplicate data across different storage locations can be crucial for safeguarding against data loss, and its absence is a minor limitation in an otherwise stellar offering.""The cluster configuration is time-consuming and tedious."

More StarWind Virtual SAN Cons →

"It would be ideal if they were providing archive licensing with the ability to create a second pool on existing storage nodes.""Having an enterprise "Storage Dashboard" that can show capacity, usage, performance, and any issues would be very beneficial.""When I sometimes reboot for maintenance, the connectivity from the iSCSI initiator host could be improved.""Datacore is developing a new WebUI with new dashboards. It is a good idea as the classic GUI is lacking dashboards.""The main problem is there is no DataCore OS.""I would like to see reporting added, such as a monthly connectivity report.""The cloud reporting interface is quite poor compared to other vendors.""I still see room for improvement with DataCore SANsymphony in the area of alarm and task management."

More DataCore SANsymphony Cons →

"It should be more user-friendly, in my opinion.""The licensing policy needs to be improved. They have a licensing policy based on the number of CPU sockets. Nowadays what has happened is that the license they are trying to move is based on the number of CPU cores. With the advancement in technology there are now more cores in a single CPU. It's been very challenging in terms of managing the license around everything. Today we have a processor with 24 and 32 cores on the same physical CPU.""It is not user-friendly, and it is very difficult to operate. You have to have a deep understanding of the technical details of the infrastructure to implement it. When you compare it with VMware, it is totally different because the graphical user interface is not that easy to understand. It is not intuitive. To use it, you have to read a lot of documentation and even understand what is going on behind the solution. It is not for someone who has a little bit of knowledge. Currently, it is too complex. I need something that is easy to implement. It should have a basic configuration as well as a complex configuration.""This product is not so stable. Maybe it is just not mature enough in its development.""The cloud deployment could be improved.""The main issue is the initial investment. It is an expensive product, and it should be cheaper. It should also be easier to use and manage. The professional service for this solution is quite complex and expensive."

Pricing and Cost Advice
  • "The setup cost is very low. The pricing is great."
  • "We are happy with the price."
  • "The license is reusable. We can always rebuild it and apply the license. Then, boom, we get new servers, apply the license, and we're back up and running."
  • "The pricing is fine for the work that it does."
  • "When we did all the analysis for StarWind, it was approximately 20 percent less than any of the other solutions that we looked at."
  • "The scalability limitation for us is its licensing. At some point in the fairly near future, we will probably have to upgrade our license so we can store eight terabytes instead of four. We are currently at four terabytes, but we're starting to knock on the door of that capacity."
  • "The pricing is excellent. It will run on anything. You don't have to buy a $100,000 server, with hardware you don't need. You just pay for the license and you're good to go."
  • "The licensing is a bit weird. If you license the standard version of StarWind, it allows you four terabytes. Then, they have a pro version, but with the pro version, the only difference is it doubles the terabytes to eight."

  • "In my case, the licensing per terabytes is very high and it must be licensed for each extra functionality."
  • "The pricing and licensing are better with DataCore."
  • "The cost is at the same level as other storage solutions and it is easy to understand the licensing."
  • "Make sure you are made aware of the annual subscription cost when purchasing."
  • "Pricing has improved but it is still expensive."
  • "This product has a good ratio between quality and price. In many cases, it's less expensive to work with DataCore than other storage systems."
  • "This solution allows the use of off-the-shelf hardware and charges by the TB of storage."
  • "The solution is cost effective."

  • "Red Hat Hyperconverged Infrastructure is an open-sourced, low-cost solution with full features."
