I recommend that Confluent should improve its solution to keep up with competitors in the market, such as Solace and other upcoming tools such as NATS. Recently, there has been a lot of buzz about Confluent charging high fees while not offering features that match those of other tools. They need to improve in that direction by not only reducing costs but also providing better solutions for the problems customers face to avoid frustrations, whether through future enhancement requests or ensuring product stability. The cost should be worked on, and they should provide better solutions for customers. Solutions should focus on hierarchical topics; if a customer has different types of data and sources, they should be able to send them to the same place for analytics. Currently, Confluent requires everything to send to the same topic, which becomes very large and makes running analytics difficult. The hierarchy of topics should be improved. This part is available in MQ and other products such as Solace, but it is missing in Confluent, leading many in capital markets and trading to switch to Solace. In terms of stability, it is not the stability itself that needs improvement but rather the delivery semantics. Other products offer exactly-once delivery out of the box, whereas Confluent states it will offer this but lacks the knobs or levers for tuning configurations effectively. Confluent has hundreds of configurations that application teams must understand, which creates a gap. Users are often unaware of what values to set for better performance or to achieve exactly-once semantics, making it difficult to navigate through them. Delivery semantics also need to be worked on.

Data virtualization has unified siloed sources and now supports real-time decisions
The best features Denodo offers stand out to me as the ability to develop REST web services fast and easily, create and combine new views, integrate different sources of data, and connect with other tools seamlessly. When I mention fast and easy creation of views and integration, I love the agile data provisioning and integration, where Denodo provides a comprehensive set of capabilities for implementing logical data integration, management, and delivery, which in turn enables agile data analytics and an informed decision-making process to be smooth. I also appreciate the performance optimization with AI, which improves performance optimization through the integration of artificial intelligence capabilities. Furthermore, I appreciate the unified security and governance, where it addresses the need for an organization to effectively manage security, data privacy, and data protection easily, offering a centralized platform that allows the application of governance policies and fine-grained security controls. Another feature I would add about Denodo is that it also provides a single point of control where we can establish security controls over the entire infrastructure and gain visibility into all our data assets. Denodo has positively impacted my organization as since we started using this tool, it has been very helpful because it is a huge advantage that we can connect to many different databases to provide data rapidly and accurately and also gain insights, which helps us to make data-driven decisions easily. It has proven to be a valuable environment for deploying data virtualization solutions, and its user community is active in finding and fixing issues more accurately. Through data insights from Denodo, we have been able to improve our decision making, which helps to better communication between the stakeholders thanks to the real-time experience. It also saves a lot of time.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"With Confluent Cloud we no longer need to handle the infrastructure and the plumbing, which is a concern for Confluent. The other advantage is that all portfolios have access to the data that is being shared."
"A person with a good IT background and HTML will not have any trouble with Confluent."
"Our main goal is to validate whether we can build a scalable and cost-efficient way to replicate data from these various sources."
"It is also good for knowledge base management."
"The solution can handle a high volume of data because it works and scales well."
"Implementing Confluent's schema registry has significantly enhanced our organization's data quality assurance."
"We mostly use the solution's message queues and event-driven architecture."
"To date, we have seen improvements in performance and scalability, so we recommend this solution."
"It allows a lot of traceability and you can decide what data you want to collect"
"One thing that we have noticed is that when you have a BI tool, you end up building a lot of the logic in the BI tool, but as a company, every company wants to be tool agnostic because today, you could be in the Qlik Sense, and tomorrow, you may decide to go with Tableau or something else that is there. If you have put a lot of logic within the tool, transitioning or moving away from one BI tool to another tool becomes a very intensive process. By keeping the logic in Denodo, you can move to any tool."
"The most valuable feature in Denodo is data virtualization."
"The data abstraction is the most valuable feature."
"While we may not be using all the features of Denodo at this time, we have found the data virtualization features to be very useful in helping us connect our data sources together, bringing all our data into one platform."
"From my experience as a data engineering team lead, I can build a data warehouse in just a minute from different sources without needing time for data transfer or any additional work."
"The ability to transfer data is very valuable; it is one of the best when considering other ETL tools and is easy to maintain."
"The best thing about Denodo is that creating and deploying a web service can be done in about 10 minutes, compared to a whole day when it comes to other solutions (such as when deploying with Java and AWS)."

Cons

"We continuously face issues, such as Kafka being down and slow responses from the support team."
"It would help if the knowledge based documents in the support portal could be available for public use as well."
"Currently, in the early stages, I see a gap on the security side. If you are using the SaaS version, we would like to get a fuller, more secure solution that can be adopted right out of the box."
"Confluent has fallen behind in being the tool of the industry. It's taking second place to things such as Word and SharePoint and other office tools that are more dynamic and flexible than Confluent."
"The pricing was high for our needs. We should not have to pay for features we do not use."
"The Schema Registry service could be improved. I would like a bigger knowledge base of other use cases and more technical forums. It would be good to have more flexible monitoring features added to the next release as well."
"They should remove Zookeeper because of security issues."
"It could be improved by including a feature that automatically creates a new topic and puts failed messages."
"Denodo has some difficulty supporting large numbers of records."
"The git configuration really should be improved."
"Denodo can improve usage management-related aspects. The performance is very slow when we go with a large number of views and high volume."
"It requires improving the story of how it can solve specific problems."
"We occasionally have some integration issues that we need to work through."
"We've been disappointed with the level of technical support, particularly on the outset."
"The solution is slow when there are many virtualization layers."
"Denodo shows stability concerns due to its dependency on external environments, such as JVM."

Pricing and Cost Advice

"Confluent has a yearly license, which is a bit high because it's on a per-user basis."
"The solution is cheaper than other products."
"Confluent is highly priced."
"The pricing model of Confluent could improve because if you have a classic use case where you're going to use all the features there is no plan to reduce the features. You should be able to pick and choose basic services at a reduced price. The pricing was high for our needs. We should not have to pay for features we do not use."
"Confluent is expensive, I would prefer, Apache Kafka over Confluent because of the high cost of maintenance."
"On a scale from one to ten, where one is low pricing and ten is high pricing, I would rate Confluent's pricing at five. I have not encountered any additional costs."
"You have to pay additional for one or two features."
"Confluent is an expensive solution."
"The licensing charges for this solution are payable annually."
"For us, the cost has been okay. Also, there are no additional costs; it's just the standard licensing fee."
"Depending on the size of the client you want to work with, it can be prohibitively expensive at times."
"I don't know the actual cost, but it's tens of thousands of dollars per month."
"There is an express edition and a licensed enterprise edition."
"The pricing is pretty good, and I would rate it at four out of five."
"I am not super familiar with the pricing, but so far, it seems good. We have been happy. We haven't seen any problems. The only time we had to pay extra was during the upgrade. We didn't upgrade at the time they told us to upgrade, and we had to pay extra to keep the service. They had stopped the support for the older version and moved to the newer version. It was not their fault. It was our fault because we didn't get on board quickly."
"Cost wise, on a scale from one to five, with one being the cheapest and five being the most expensive, Denodo would be at three. We get all the features in a bundle."
