Improves disaster recovery processes and offers an efficient CPU cycle optimization
Using BMC Data Management for IMS and DB2 on z/OS has greatly improved our database administration tasks. Although we don't test the database before production, we have experienced benefits in disaster recovery situations and capacity management. For instance, when facing capacity issues during peak transaction times, I've been able to quickly allocate additional resources to ensure smooth operations. This has been crucial, especially during times when the demand surges, such as peak flight hours.

Comprehensive documentation and smooth collaboration have transformed our development process
There are always areas for improvement. They have actually in the last 12 months done a lot of work on the UI. If you had contacted me at Christmas last year, the UI was really dated. Now, they have not finished cleaning it up or bringing it into a new flash version. But because it has such a simple design, it is actually so easy to use. They have taken a lot of the complexity out of it, so you just click on a button and it does it all for you. I think one weakness, which I might have worked around today, is spatial data. But that might change by Monday. That is again because there is so much functionality, actually the real weakness is they have got too much functionality, if that is a weakness. Because there are 10 ways to do everything, and each way has its own pros and cons, and you really have to make your decision about which way to implement it. When you have five developers or three developers doing something, it is very easy for three people to do the same thing three different ways. On the flip side, that is one of its amazing strengths, as you are not locked into a very rigid way of doing something. It means that a lot of our custom environments are fantastic because we can just plug it in a slightly different way. But because it does so much, it is a lot to get your head around the whole thing. We tend to focus on the small stuff that we are adding value to right now.

Quotes from Members

We asked business professionals to review the solutions they use. Here are some excerpts of what they said:

Pros

"I have worked with DB2's great features in the last five years. The IDAA feature transformed the vision of warehousing, business analytics, and big data at my bank. Besides the mainframe, I saw that this solution was evolutionary. It gives real-time information."
"BMC Data Management improved our data recovery process by simplifying it."
"The solution is connected to various phones. It retrieves the configuration from the system."
"The basic tools are easy to pick up and understand."
"We can develop our own code if we do not see the functionality we need."
"I like the way that you can use the context variables, and how you can work those context variables to give you values and settings for every development environment, such as PROD, TEST, and DEV."
"I think Talend is one of the easiest tools for faster implementation compared to other tools."
"The availability of connectors is great."
"The tool was mainly used for ETL processes to apply governance rules on data."
"The solution can run on any machine and that is a big advantage."

Cons

"DB2 is a hard tool to grasp. It's hard for users to learn how to use it. It's not easy to see how it works."
"One area for improvement with this product could be in providing clearer guidance and tools for disaster recovery planning and execution."
"Once you get past the basic tools, it gets pretty complicated."
"Including either XML or JSON in the next release would definitely be a good transformation. I'm not sure if Talend has that feature, but it's one of those requirements that we are working around and have to do some parsing of XML so this could make it easier."
"I wonder if, at the same price, the API component could be added, which would be beneficial."
"I would like to sync a project and do an upload from that current version, and then from GitLab, be able to download the latest one."
"The documentation from version to version could be more accurate."
"The stability is good, but the performance is slower when I work on a huge amount of data."
"Data management could also encompass APIs and real-time streaming data integration."
"Performance and speed could be improved."
