What is our primary use case?
I have used CloudForecast on different environments, especially the cloud, as my specialization has largely been working on cloud infrastructure. I have used CloudForecast for integrating it with AWS in order to monitor and optimize costs. I also use it to track resource usage and help reduce unnecessary cloud spending while maintaining better cost visibility.
I worked on a recent project where I used CloudForecast to monitor AWS spending and identify resources that were costing more than necessary. We had a challenge with cost budgets where the project was spending significantly more than budgeted. I needed to clarify which resources were actually consuming costs. I reviewed the EC2 usage and cost reports and identified instances that were overprovisioned and those running without sufficient workload demand. I used the findings to right-size the instances and identified and reviewed idle resources. I configured cost alerts to detect unexpected spending increases and combined that with AWS monitoring tools, which helped reduce EC2 costs significantly while maintaining application performance and availability, achieving reductions well over 35%.
I worked on another project with CloudForecast where I used it to track AWS costs across multiple projects and environments. I analyzed spending by service, project, and environment using AWS resource tags. This allowed me to identify resources left running in development and testing environments outside working hours. I implemented automated start and stop schedules using AWS serverless Lambda and EventBridge to shut down non-production EC2 instances when they were not needed. This significantly reduced unnecessary infrastructure costs and improved cost accountability across our teams.
How has it helped my organization?
CloudForecast has provided significant improvements to our organization. We have been able to reduce costs as much as possible while gaining cost visibility and eliminating unnecessary cloud spending. We manage resources more efficiently and have achieved 35% savings on EC2 costs through better resource allocation and optimization. We now have better budgeting decisions, reduced manual cost reviews, and improved accountability across our various teams.
CloudForecast has made cloud spending more transparent across various teams on our projects. For accountability purposes, each team can see the infrastructure costs associated with their applications, so we know exactly where the costs come from. Each team is now consciously aware of the resources they are utilizing and how resourceful they are with those resources. Teams have better budget responsibility because they became more conscious of resource provisioning, and everyone is now avoiding unnecessary spending. Additionally, we can easily trace issues and resolve them better with cost anomaly detection as we investigate with relevant resource owners. Our teams now have better visibility and measurements with financial impacts, especially on optimization efforts.
What is most valuable?
The best features I can identify include the ability to provide clear cost optimization through what I would call zero-waste cost optimization, and its ability to identify and single out underutilized or overutilized AWS resources, which is a very important feature. Another valuable feature is cost anomaly detection because it detects unexpected increases in cloud spending and helps identify the services responsible for that increase. CloudForecast also helped with daily cost monitoring because I can have automated daily AWS and Azure spending reports, including usage trends and projected monthly costs.
Regarding cost anomaly detection, it helps with detecting unexpected increases in cloud spending during my day-to-day work. With this feature, we do not encounter unexpected cloud estimates of our resources utilized. It helps identify the services or resources that are responsible for spending increases. CloudForecast has significantly helped with cost monitoring because I can now track cloud spending and compare usage and costs against historical patterns. This allows me to flag any unusual cost increases and indicate unexpected resource consumption.
Another valuable capability is helping identify and mitigate against data transfer spikes. When sudden increases in cost region traffic occur, we are able to have a clear overview of what transpired in terms of cost anomaly detection. CloudForecast provides spending visibility and cost investigation, and when combined with AWS Cost Anomaly, I can use machine learning to identify unusual spending patterns. I can then configure alert thresholds and perform root cause analysis.
From my experience, I would say CloudForecast's intelligent cost capabilities are very useful and trustworthy to some extent for identifying potential cloud cost issues. However, I would not rely on them blindly and always verify the recommendations it puts forward. I have not found independently verified accuracy metrics that are false positives, and the accuracy has been good so far.
What needs improvement?
In terms of improvements, having more integrations with other tools and other cloud environments would be beneficial. Regarding anomaly detection, there should be more intelligence to reduce false alerts and identify unusual spending patterns earlier. Another improvement would be better tagging enforcement to make it easier to identify which team, application, or deployment is responsible for increased spending. Since I use Kubernetes extensively, CloudForecast could be improved by providing more detailed EKS cost allocation, especially by namespace, workload, and application.
Reporting could also be improved with better reporting features. Engineering teams and finance teams should have tailored dashboards for their various teams that show cost trends, optimization opportunities, and realized savings. The various teams should have options to design their own dashboards and means through which they can interact with an agent to create unique dashboards for their specific teams.
The major reasons for these improvement suggestions are that there are rooms for improvement, especially with automated remediation, deeper Kubernetes cost tracking, and integration with CI/CD pipelines to identify potential cost increases before deployments. I believe the team can do significantly better.
Regarding governance and security, I believe CloudForecast provides a good foundation for cloud cost governance, but I would like to see stronger governance controls, especially automated tagging enforcement, policy as code integration, and clearer accountability for cloud resource ownership. From a security perspective, I would prioritize least-privilege IAM access, role-based permissions, and audit logging.
